Blogging

I love the idea of blogging in a community of homeschoolers as we are homeschoolers.  I have been homeschooling my children for over 7 years now and I love talking to others who homeschoolers.

I also really enjoy blogging with other homesteaders (I have a blog there too).  It is great to talk with like minded people, to get ideas, to share experiences and such.

How can I blog on both and be attentive?  I just don't feel that I can so I have a one in all blog.  I started it the end of July and it is working out great.  My friends from both homestead blogger and homeschool blogger visit, comment and I do the same.  If you are interested in visiting me just click here.  When you visit please leave a comment so I can visit you!

May God bless you and give you a great week.

Homeschool Tip- Weather

We are working on weather in our schooling and since weather is a year round occurance we have found a great way of adding every month.  Graphs, baby!!  For 1 week a month (that is Mon-Fri) every hour on the hour from 9 am to 9 pm we will record the temperature outside.  We will also record whether or not it was cloudy or sunny.  We will record if we got precipitation (fancy word for water from the sky wink, wink) and how much.  This will go each month until we have done the whole year.  As each month progresses we can compare what the weather is doing.  There are variations of this, of course.  You can record just one day a week every week.  You could record every day for the whole month or whatever but it is still a lot of fun to do.   Once we have a week’s worth of info we make temperature graphs and precipitation (there’s that fancy word again) graphs.  The whole family gets into it and learns a lot.  This can easily be tied in with the different seasons as well.

Not here enough

I really need to post here more.  I enjoy reading the blogs here but I have another blog I spend most of my energy on.  My blog- Yes, They Are All Mine is a newer version of my old blog.  I like the freedom of my new place but I really am going to try to put more into this place too.  Shame on me, I know!  :)

We started the new school year this month.  Now there are 4 who are homeschooling and 2 who are too young.  We are starting to get into a pattern and the big kids are doing a great job helping Ms. Banana settle into a schooling routine.  She is so happy to be doing "schoolwork" like the big kids.  Too cute!  I

I have been organizing all of my supplies and things are looking much better.  I have it all seperated into clear tubs, they are labeled and stacked on shelves.  I need to get another shelf or two but not yet.  With the house being for sale I don't want to take up all of our wall space with shelves.  We can manage for a while as is.  I can get to everything I need for now.

I am off to read some blogs.  Good night and God bless!

Shame on me!

Next week is the last week of our 3 week "summer break" and I have not yet cemented our schedule for the 07-08 school year.  We start again July 9th and I have to sit down and get my act together.  I have already gone through all of our curriculum, organized it and have a master log to refer to.  I just need to get a schedule set up.

Today I am going to get started on taking the doors off of the cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom.  We are painting them to freshen them up.  We are listing the house and this is the last big project we have to complete.  It needs to be done as soon as we can so it does not interfere with schooling.  I also have to talk to a real estate agent about what is around here.  We love living in N. Georgia and do not want to leave the area.  I am praying God will provide what our family needs within our budget.

That is all for now.  I have a baby to feed as well as 5 children.  God Bless!

Getting Organized

Last night I went through all of my homeschooling materials and I have to say- Shheeesshhhhh I have a lot!  LOL  Between the stuff I bought and have been giving we are well covered for a while.  I have them all organized into Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Bible Study and Misc.  I also wrote them all down and the grade they cover so I have the list at my fingertips instead of trying to go through them to see what I have every time I want to start something new.  I only have one or two items to purchase and that is it!  The stores will start having the school supplies out soon and then I will go stock up on those as well.  I have all of that stuff organized into tubs, labeled and put on a shelf.  I also packed up and labeled the box of last year's completed items that I cannot reuse.  Next, I have to decide on a schedule for each of the kids.

Now I have more laundry waiting on me and we are going to head outside to hang the wash and pick blackberries.

Day 1

Well, today is the first day of our "summer break".  We only take a few weeks off but I plan on making the most of them.   I have plenty of curriculum to go through.  I need to get next year's organized and ready.  I also need to get this year's completed items packed up and put out in the shed.

With my "off" weeks I also plan on painting the kitchen, having a yard sale, working in the gardens and going through all the floor junk I have around here.  I need to sit down and make a list of everything I want to get done and prioritize it.   Maybe I will put it on the fridge next to Mr. Muslces' honey-could-you-please-list.  LOL   When he sees what I have to do he won't feel so bad about what is on his list.

The surprise trip to the park for a picnic and cake with their friends was a huge hit with the kids.  They had a blast and played until their legs just wouldn't work anymore.  LOL  I love those days.

Next to last day

Today is the next to last day for this school year.  The kids are in a flurry to get their stuff done for the day.  We are also making sure to record all the books they have read for the library's summer reading program.  Tomorrow we will be spending our last day of school at the library.

Thank you to everyone who gave suggestions for a daily bible study we can use.  We already use scripture for handwriting.  You gave some really good ideas for us to look into.

Bible Study

I have a quick question for all of you homeschoolers (those who wander in here anyway ).  I am interested in doing a daily bible study with my children this coming school year.  What do you suggest?  Do you make your own?  Do you have a guide to suggest?  Your help is greatly appreciated!!!

~Rhen

I can see the light!

Just a few more days and we are done with the 06-07 school year.  Our last day we are going to spend at the library and then I will surprise the kids with a trip to the park and a cake.  They have done really well and deserve it.  The kids get a few weeks off to play and such while I spend that time getting our 07-08 schedules together.  I am excited about implementing some of the scheduling ideas I have gotten from other homeschoolers.  In the past years I have been pretty free about scheduling but this coming school year I will have 4 out of our 6 who will be schooling so a little more organization is called for.    I have to go through all of the curriculum I have ordered and see if there is anything I missed.  I need to get it ordered if I don't already have it.

Do you have a particular schedule you follow?   Maybe year round?  Maybe 5 weeks on, 1 week off?  I would be interested in knowing if you care to share!

My Introduction

Hello!  I am Rhen, mother and teacher of 6 (1 month g, 2 g,4 g,6 g,8 b,10g) I have 4 that are schooling right now and two that are too young.  I have homeschooled them since the beginning.  We live on a homestead in the mountains of N. GA and love it.

I am almost done with my decisions for 07-08's curriculum with the exception of math for my 6 year old and 10 year old.  I was wondering what math other homeschoolers are using and recommend.  I have been considering Alpha Omega Lifepac math and Saxon math.  My 6 year old loves math and my 10 year old doesn't.  Any suggestions?  Thanks so much!

God Bless,

~Rhen
