Our Nature Journal

Posted in Nature Notes

Did you know that we have a nature blog?  It's like an online nature journal.  Please visit if you like nature and poetry. Please visit if you don't.  : )

You do not like them.

So you say.

Try them! Try them! And you may.

Try them and you may, I say.

Say, I like green eggs and ham!

What kind of butterfly is this?

Posted in Nature Notes

We found this butterfly recently and we have not been able to find out what it is called in any of our field guides. If you know what it is, then please tell us.

This guy ate BUGS!

Posted in Nature Notes

You must go visit the Entomologist's blog.  He actually ate insects at a bug banquet this week.  The pictures are amazing!  Keep a bucket near you.  We give him a TEN for bravery.  We won't tell you what number we give him for craziness.

Live African Web Cam

Posted in Nature Notes

We like to visit a website from Africa that has webcams.  If you click on a particular one, you can watch a picture being taken LIVE every 30 seconds of wild animals.  We especially like the leopard cam.  If you happen to see a really neat animal and click on the website to have it saved, then your name will be featured that day with the animal you captured.  You need to check this site out.  It is so fun.  The only problem is that it is addictive.  Click HERE!

Nature Scavenger Hunt

Posted in Nature Notes

A few days ago, my mom canceled our school lessons and instead, sent my brother and sisters and I on a NATURE SCAVENGER HUNT. We took a backpack, camera and snacks and were gone for two hours. This was the list of things we had to find. We had a little trouble with the bird’s nest but we managed to find everything. My mom graded us according to how much we found and how well we cooperated with each other. The prize was a candy bar. For us, that is a big deal because we don’t get candy very often.

                        1 insect (identified)

                        1 oak leaf

                        1 one acorn

                        1 hazelnut catkin and leaf

1 photo of a turtle or lizard

                        1 poplar tree leaf

                        1 beech tree leaf

                        1 chestnut tree leaf

                        2 different kinds of mushrooms

                        1 photo of a bird’s nest

5 different kinds of wildflowers (identified)

                        1 apple tree leaf

                        1 plum tree leaf

                        1 peach tree leaf

                        1 fig tree leaf

                        4 buds (identified)

2 photos of 2 different birds identified

                        a unique rock (identified)

1 photo of a baby mammal

Here is a picture of some of our finds. Can you identify them?

Bald Eagle Web Cam

Posted in Nature Notes

Yesterday, we stumbled upon a live web cam of a bald eagle sitting on her eggs.  If you click on this link you can go there and see it for yourself.  The eggs are due to hatch between April 26 and 30.

The Myth

"The value of the myth is that it
takes all the things we know and
restores to them the rich
significance which has been hidden
by the veil of familiarity . . .
By putting bread, gold, horse, apple
or the very roads into a myth,
we do not retreat from reality:
we rediscover it. As long as the
story lingers in our mind,
the real things are more themselves.
[The Lord of the Rings]
applies the treatment not only
to bread or apple but to good and evil,
to our endless perils, our anguish
and our joys. By dipping them in myth
we see them more clearly. I do not
think [Tolkien] could have done it
in any other way.”
- C.S. Lewis
