Ear Infections

Ear Infections

Most ear infections occur in the outer and middle ears.  Often wax or irritation can be the cause of the infection.  Such as damage caused by cleaning.  Usually they are complications of colds, or upper respiratory infections.  They may be accompanied by other cold and flu like symptoms.  “IF you experience sharp, severe pain, followed by a sudden drainage of blood and/or pus from your ear you may have a perforated eardrum.”2
Symptoms- pain, itching, discharge, also it is possible to develop boils.  Children often cry, pull on their ears, have trouble nursing or sucking on a bottle. Earaches can one of the most painful of childhood illnesses. (4) And parents often feel helpless as they believe it can cause hearing loss and other complications. (4) However hearing loss is incredibly rare as a result of ear infections. (4)  If a child has put an object in the ear get them to a doctor immediately (4).
75% of children will have at least 3 ear infections before they are six. (3) “Otitis Media (Middle ear infection) is responsible for about 8 % of all patient visits to pediatric practices and 17% of all infections that are diagnosed (4).”  However not all 17% are actually infections as it is one of the most overdiagnosed problem. (4) There is a belief that the narrowing of the Eustachian tubes is due to the toxic environment. (3)

Traditional Medicine

Most doctors prescribe a variety of medicines, as well as inserting tubes. (4) But, Dr. Mendelsohn MD, actively now opposes these measures as well as trying to avoid antibiotics(4). With an otosope what does the Dr really see? They often can’t see an infection if is it behind the ear drum it is not possible, and often redness can be due to other issues.  The only case when antibiotics should be prescribed for ear infections according to Mendelsohn is when the ear is discharging pus. In controlled studies the administering of antibiotics made no difference in hearing loss, spread of infection, or mastoiditis. They may reduce the duration of pain and infection but also reduce the body’s natural immune system (4).
Most people feel better within 48-72hours after taking antibiotics such as amoxicillin, cefaclor, cefime, erythromycin and sulfamethoxazole plus trimethoprim (These are the ones most often prescribed AS OF 1999)(2). If the ear infection doesn’t respond then according to conventional treatment you should talk to or contact your doctor.  Analgesics can help relieve ear pain, and doctors pay prescribe something stronger than the over the counter ones (acetaminophen or ibuprofen). If the infection is related to sinus or nasal congestion, antihistamines and/or decongestants may be prescribed. “Research has not shown these medications to be helpful in actually curing ear infections, however”2  “If you have an ear infection and develop a fever, chills, dizziness or serious hearing loss, or experience a severe headache, a stiff neck, lethargy, or changes in consciousness, contact your physician immediately These can be signs of serious complications, such as meningitis or an infection that has traveled to the inner ear.”2
Many times antibiotics are prescribed because parents insist on them, not because they are needed, or helpful. The majority of EIs are viral instead of bacterial so the antibiotics do nothing. “In addition, antibiotics destroy the good bacteria in your body, which can lead to other problems.”  An imbalance of bacteria can lead to repeat Eis, and antibiotics can lead to diarrhea as well as other health problems, “…if antibiotics are given for a bacterial infection, it doesn't allow the body to build up its own antibodies against the bacteria. This is why … some people will get the same bacteria type of infection over and over when using antibiotics.”(1)  “Some children respond well to antibiotics; “others are put on a round-robin of antibiotics treatments (sometimes for years); and others still require surgery.”(3) “Children given antibiotics for early infections are 2-6 times more likely to develop a recurrence than children who did not receive the antibiotic treatment.” (1991 Journal of the American Medical Association quoted in 3).
“Over $3.5 billion is spent by American parents every year on the treatment of ear infections, primarily on antibiotics.”(3) The long term use of antibiotics is not yet known.(3)
For our children/Babies- They need  “to get on a probiotic - acdiophilus bifidus supplement, besides the yogurt. This will help to restore …destroyed (from antibiotics, illness, stress, etc.) intestinal flora, the healthy bacteria that is the backbone of the immune system.”1  If you do a google search for probiotic and infant it brings up lots of information and links to places that sell liquid supplements.  I found that the probiotics should be taken spaced out between the antibiotics,  and try to give after at least an hour from the time the antibiotic is administered.
You should see a doctor if the ear pain has persisted over 48 hours, this is to rule out trauma of foreign material in the ear.
Dietary
“Eliminating all sugar, juice, dairy, and greasy/fatty foods from diet. Dairy produces and thickens mucous in the body. The others all weaken the immune system.”1 (2 and 3 concur)
Sugar- “is a challenge to the body and feeds fungal, parasitic, and bacterial infections” (3)
Milk and cheese- “ Dairy can be a mucus- forming food…” yogurt may be fine (3).
    Drink lots of liquids

Nutritional

Increase the vitamin C One can actually go to the point of saturation which is outlined on this website http://www.doctoryourself.com.  For Josiah I give 4,000mg a day when ill, And I take up to 18,000 mg per day.  If you get diarrhea then your body has been saturated. Get a Vit C that contains “mineral-ascorbate-buffered vitamin C but no sugar”2
    Take probiotic supplement. 2
Take Bioflavinoids along with the Vit C- both are anti inflammatory, for adults according to Smart Medicine take 500-1,000mg(dosage recommended for adults) of each 4-5 times daily, but you can take more as the VIT C can’t be overdosed as I noted earlier. 2

Home Remedy

Yellow Onion- antimicrobial, cut in ½ warm in oven to 200 degrees, wrap in cheese cloth, hold against ear till onion is cool, onion can be reheated and reused.
Tea Tree oil and Garlic- for itchy ears- mosten cotton swab w/ tea tree oil, dab on infected area morning and night, if to irritating dilute with mild veg or nut oil ie sunflower, almond, or olive (I RECOMMEND DILUTING especially for our young babes) 3drops tea tree to ½-1tsp carrier oil, If more help needed use 2 drops of garlic oil,  After applying plug ear with cotton. (DON’T USE if ear drum is perforated!)
Peppermint- for waxy buildup, 2 drops peppermint oil. ½ tsp olive oil, warm oils, while sleeping insert as much oil as ear will hold, plug with cotton. (DON’T USE if ear drum is perforated!)
Hydrogen Peroxide- wax buildup, insert a few drops into the ear 2x/day for 2-3 days.(4)
Dr. Mendelsohn recommends “Use a heating pad; insert two drops of heated (but not hot) olive oil in the child’s ear every two hours; give whiskey by mouth, which will help the child sleep (Give 10 drops of whiskey to a small baby and up to ½ tsp to a larger one.  The does can be repeated in one hour and once more in another hour, if needed.); and, if severe pain continues, use the appropriate children’s does of acetaminophen.  The object is to relieve the symptoms while the body defends itself.” (4)

NOTE: NEVER USE INSTRUMENTS TO REMOVE WAX as the lining of the ear is very thin! This includes parents as well as doctors, as more damage can be done by inserting an instrument than the ear infection!

Integrative Medicine

- chiropractor for adjustments for ears.(1) Alignments can increase blood and oxygen to the ears. (3)
- osteopath for cranial therapy for ears. (1)
- behind-the-ear massage to help promote the draining of fluid. (1)

In General

Do not lay on your back, lie on the uninfected side. Prop head up with pillows (for adults). (2)  For infants prop up mattress with towels etc under the mattress, so their head is raised.  Also if not rolling yet you can place them on their sides with a special wedge pillow. If they are already rolling they may HATE the pillow .
Apply warm compresses- some will feel better with warm other with cold. (2)
Avoid air travel- due to pressure change, same can be said for car rides that contain a change in elevation. (2)

Prevention

* Give a 1/2 multivitamin + 1 100mg vitamin C (twice a day). (1)
* Flax seed oil. (1)
* Probiotic/prebiotic (not doing every day) (1)
* Wheat germ (1)
* A pinch of my zinc supplement (very small amount). (1)
* No dairy. (1)
* Organic foods as much as possible. (If meat/eggs, no growth hormones or antibiotics.) (1)
* Nontoxic cleaners around the house. (1) It is amazing the toxins in our cleaning products! EVEN bleach and ammonia, not to mention TOOTHPASTE ;).
* Open winter to air out house. (1)
Cut out dairy, especially when ill as it increase the mucus
Many moms purchase otoscopes so they can keep an eye out for redness, they can be found at a Walgreens Pharmacy for only $10, and probably online at drugstore.com
    Avoid smoke (2)
    Massage ear (2)
Use Elimination diet to determine if food allergies are contributing. (2)
Avoid exposure to other allergens IE pets, dust etc(2,3). This includes washing bedding and clothes in allergy free detergents before using next to the baby(2,3).
Kinesiologically test food “because poorly tolerated foods can result in the buildup of mucus, which is a precursor to many ear infections.”(3)  If breastfeeding the mother can also get tested. “Common offenders include dairy, soy, wheat, corn, peanuts, chocolate, orange juice, and eggs.”(3)

Knee Surgery

Posted in Health
I went to my knee specialist Friday, and he still recommends surgery so I am having surgery on Thursday. This way dh only has to take off one day of work.
It is Arthoscopic, lateral retinacular release and possible pateller shave, plus this time a distal extensor realignment. Lots of words for releasing the kneecap and realligning it.
Both my knees hurt so much I can't even sit without pain, so I am ready to be able to walk again!
I go to a naturopath, but nothing he has suggested  has helped enough.

Newest Vaccine Study.. evaluated by me!

Posted in Health
A friend who knows I love to research sent me this link at MSN

Kid's Vaccine Ingredient Not Likely Linked to Neurological ......
so I went to the actual thesis
New England Medical Journal
Their writing is now in black, mine in blue

---------------------------------------------------------------
Our study does not support a causal association between early exposure to mercury from thimerosal-containing vaccines and immune globulins and deficits in neuropsychological functioning at the age of 7 to 10 years.

assessing 42 neuropsychological outcomes. (We did not assess autism-spectrum disorders.) Since the CDC is conducting a separate case–control study of autism in relation to mercury exposure, a measure of autism was not included in the test battery.

I copied and pasted the second sentence to be right after the first to show a possible reason why they didn't include autism. Why only 42 outcomes, I understand why as it is a study, but what about the rest of the neuropsychological outcomes?

We did not assess periods of thimerosal exposure after 214 days of age because we hypothesized that the potential effect of such exposure would be small. (Since most vaccines that are administered after 214 days would typically be given at 12 to 18 months of age, the dose per kilogram would be substantially lower.)

They did state in their conclusion that this is a weak point in their study. I think it was a horrible assumption to make.

Measures of attention, hyperactivity, and executive functioning were based on reports from parents and teachers.
- They are using people who have been desensitized to a level of tolerance

See Table 1

with only 16 without mercury, by 7 months, how many less were picked off before age seven by their kindergarten vaccinations? I would like to see these Non thimerosol injected kiddos along side those with the mercury to see exactly what happens. But we were given a range and would have to dig through their actual data to find something I feel would be more useful.

Children who had been exposed to higher levels of thimerosal were more likely to have mothers with higher IQ scores and levels of education and to be from two-parent households where English was the primary language spoken.
- maybe these circumstances rather than the level of thimerosal are more indicative of the type of issues the child is dealing with?

Exposure from Birth to 7 Months

Increasing mercury exposure from birth to 7 months was associated with significantly better performance on the Grooved Pegboard Test of the nondominant hand and the WISC-III digit-span test (Table 3). Among boys, higher exposure to mercury from birth to 7 months was associated with significantly better performance on letter and word identification on the Woodcock–Johnson test, third edition (WJ-III), poorer performance on the parental rating of behavioral regulation on the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function, and a higher likelihood of motor and phonic tics, as reported by the children's evaluators. Among girls, higher exposure to mercury from birth to 7 months was associated with significantly better performance on the Grooved Pegboard Test of the nondominant hand and the WISC-III digit-span test of backward recall.

Exposure from Birth to 28 Days

Higher mercury exposure during the first 28 days of life was associated with significantly poorer performance on the Goldman–Fristoe Test of Articulation, second edition (GFTA-2), and better performance on the Finger Tapping Dominant Hand test (Table 3). Among boys, higher neonatal mercury exposure was associated with significantly better performance on the Finger Tapping Dominant Hand test, the Finger Tapping Non-dominant Hand test, and performance IQ on the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI). Among girls, increased neonatal mercury exposure was associated with significantly lower scores in verbal IQ on the WASI and a lower likelihood of motor tics on the basis of ratings by parents.

If you read this correctly you realize there was significant differences between those exposed to more mercury than others... These "symptoms" of higher mercury are low mercury poisoning. And are also symptoms of Autistic spectrum disorders. What gets me is they (MSN) can site a study like this and make it say .. there are no negative effects! Yet right here in their study it shows there is... negative and positive effects, from the higher mercury levels.

We assessed children on 42 neuropsychological outcomes and found few significant associations with exposure to mercury from vaccines and immune globulins administered prenatally or during the first 7 months of life. The associations that we detected were small, almost equally divided between positive and negative effects, and mostly sex-specific.

Yet again they did find SOME NEGATIVE EFFECTS!

Although the effect sizes were very small, the speech-articulation findings among all children and the lower verbal IQ findings among girls suggest a possible adverse association between neonatal exposure to mercury and language development. In the previous Vaccine Safety Datalink analysis, an increased risk of language delays at one HMO was associated with postneonatal exposure to thimerosal-containing vaccines.4 Conversely, the finding of higher scores on the performance IQ tests in boys makes it difficult to draw general conclusions about possible effects of neonatal mercury exposure from vaccines and immune globulins on intellectual abilities.

Why is it hard, just say there may be gender differences in reactions to vaccines. Another thing, as you notice our children our guinea pigs.

Andrews and colleagues21 studied 103,043 British children and found more protective associations than harmful associations with mercury exposure from vaccines administered in the first year of life. The one deleterious association involved an increased risk of tics, a finding similar to that in our study. Heron and Golding32 studied 12,956 British children who typically had been exposed to mercury from vaccination at 3, 4, and 6 months of age. Among 69 outcomes, the only adverse association was poorer prosocial behavior, and there were several beneficial associations.

Do I as a parent want to trade the positives for the negatives? Poor Prosocial behavior = autistic spectrum disorder IMO.

The weight of the evidence in this study does not support a causal association between early exposure to mercury from thimerosal-containing vaccines and immune globulins administered prenatally or during infancy and neuropsychological functioning at the age of 7 to 10 years. The overall pattern of results suggests that the significant associations may have been chance findings stemming from the large number of statistical tests that we performed

They dismiss their "findings" as chance.
All in all they did a fairly good thesis of their study, as you can see I didn't even have to bring anything else into it to call into question MSN's reporting of it... or even their own supposed conclusions. But at least they did state what they found, but what irks me is they turn right around and say their findings were a fluke in the conclusion!!

Food, Diet, Lifestyle

Posted in Health
During and since my cleanse I have lost 16 pounds. Yeah me! I still want to loose 24 more minimum.
Right now I am Vegan, but testing myself on Chicken and fish. I plan to never eat any meats other than Chicken or Seafood. And to always eat organically. It has been almost a month and I am doing good. I wish I was loosing a bit more each week, but there is not much more I can really do.
I am drinking plenty of water, eating extremely well, and exercising a lot. By a lot I mean I am exercising daily 30-45 minutes. I have been walking to the grade school, which is up hill, takes me about 25min, pushing the kids in the cart the whole way (which is about 80lbs or more). Then they play at the park for awhile and I walk them back. Other days I do treadmill, tae bo, or yoga.
Two weeks in a row I have taken the kids swimming. I try and tread water while doing that to get in my exercise also.

Other health wise- My IBS is not  an issue anymore. I am eating No dairy, only a couple bites of meat (chix, and tuna). I seem to have a problem with wheat but not sprouted wheat. So avoiding that. I found a great little restaurant The Blue Scorcher that does all Organic, and wheat free items. Twice now I have had their wheat free scones, first was date, the second was strawberry. Not only were they good, I felt good after eating them. YEAH!

Still having asthma though, and fighting dh all the time still. darn it.

Master Cleanse

Posted in Health

Currently I am on day 12 of my third Master Cleanse. The Master Cleanse is also called the Lemonade Diet. The basics of the diet/cleanse/fast are 1 lemon, 5TBL (I add one TBL for me or I get too hungry), in 20 oz of  water. Drink at least 60 oz every day.  Every night, unless it is a longer fast take Smooth Move, or another laxative tea. For me I seap it for 1 minute and only drink 1/2 and it is plenty. For others they have to take more. Every morning, you put 2 tsp of Sea salt (without iodine) in 1 quart of water. It is a salt water flush. The flush is necessary to clear the body of the toxins.

Also make sure to drink 1/2 your weight in oz every day.

Why did I do this? mainly to loose weight but also because I was in pain, digestive wise. And I knew that this would help. So it is day 12 and I am going 2 more full days, and the third day I come off. So a total of 15 days. After this I plan to change my diet. Stay off dairy, and processed foods. Only meat being chicken or seafood. And  Lots of fruits and vegis. Also ONLY ORGANIC. I found that we do have a good organic grocery that has enough for me to eat that I don't have to go to New Seasons, unless I really want to.

I also started sprouting lentils and wheat berries in some canning jars today. I'll let you know how it goes.

Playing Catch Up

Posted in Health

Lots has been going on lately in my personal life-

Medical etc.- Went to a new naturopath, acupuncturist etc on Weds the 10th, then twice since then and again next week. He focuses on Chinese Medicine (which takes into consideration the entire body, instead of separating the parts and medicating the symptoms). Allopathic medicine does medicate symptoms instead of treating the problem that is causing the symptom. One example of this is a headache. In Allopathic medicine we take take Ibuprophen or Aspirin, where in Chinese medicine they would determine the cause of the headache, often using chiropractic or acupunture techniques, and determining where the patient was off balance. Still having lots of IBS issues and Asthma so I am stopping all dairy products. I was already off milk but know no cheese :S. I love cheese with a good wine.

Anyway trying to go more vegetarian also, so little by little I am trying to get more healthy, and by default will feel better as my chronic illnesses will be eliminated.

Family-
Lots of interpersonal issues here, so anyone praying, your prayers are appreciated. On a good note my BIL is coming to spend a week next Wednesday from ND.

Home- Trying to get more organized in general is also helping me at home, keeping it in order and clean with two preschool boys is quite a trial, but I have vowed to keep on keeping on.

Homeschooling- Josiah is Kindergarten Age next year, and he loves seatwork. So I plan to get a full curriculum for him. I talked to my friend Margie who lives nearby and she uses ACE (Accelerated Christian Education). And it looks perfect for Josiah. Instead of large workbooks, or textbooks, they use PACES (which are the size of a chapter out of a book). Since Josiah is very self-motivaated this would work great.

This year I have all the themes planned out (unit study method). January is The Solar System, Space etc. We got a couple DVD showing kids at space camp and one all about the space shuttle and astronaut training. Josiah is really enjoying it and loves to do more than what I have planned, where Isaac needs a bit of help staying on task. February is Who we are, who we love (Family) etc. I just finished the daily plans thru March a couple days ago, so things are going well. I just need to not put off using HOP with Josiah. We got HOP from a friend so it saved us alot of $$.

I plan to attend the Homeschooling Curriculum Fair with Margie in June or July, so that I can confirm which curriculum I would like to use.
