Oct. 14, 2007 We named our Homeschool
Well it is about time, I just never thought I needed it till I started doing things that asked the name of our school.
I had a lot of ideas but settled on Gracewalk Harbor

Oct. 12, 2007 Long Beach Penninsula
Before heading out the boys made notebooks.. taking the printer paper and staple them in half. We brought pencils and our notebooks with some books for backing. I need to pick up two small clipboards. After each place we stopped I had the kids draw a part of it; either on the spot or in the van.
For the free museum day we headed to Long Beach Washington to their World Kite Museum.
Along the way we stopped for breakfast at one of our favorite places called The Blue Scorcher Cafe in Astoria. Then we headed across the bridge to Fort Columbia, it was raining a bit off and on all day but stayed dry while we were out. It totally hurt my knees though, which was a bummer. We walked down into the battery, and looked all around.
Then we went to Illwaco's Saturday Market, the weather was raining sideways and windy, but I have put the kids in their winter coats with hoods so we were fine, they loved the artwork of dave Bartolet, so we picked up a bookmark and a card which came in handy later.
After the Market and buying some fresh veggies we headed out to the Lighthouses, we went to North Head lighthouse first, and the walk wasn't too bad on me and the kids kept up fine. They were not allowed to climb it but were given a sticker and we picked up some brochures. Then to Cape Dissappointment Lighthouse. Now this one was only a .7 mile walked but it hurt very bad, I cried as we walked it. But the boys did fine, and found a fun treefort and an old bunker. At both headlands the wind blew the kids pretty well but they walked behind me and thought it was great.
After the lighthouses we were a bit wet, tired and hungry so we headed to Longbeach to find some food. I stopped at the Vistors Center in Seaview but they were fairly hopeless in having to deal with my dietary needs as a vegan. So I found a place it was closed, second place was closed at 2pm, they advised a third place so we went to Debi's in Longbeach and had the fastest service I have ever had. I ordered the kids hamburgers as we entered, and after looking at their menu I got a vegie sandwich.
Then we headed to the KITE MUSEUM for Free Museum Day! IT was great, there were kites from Indonesia, China, Japan and more. They have different areas set up with videos. Then we made kites and took them to the windy rainy beach.
After we were tired we headed to Marsh's Free Museum used up our coins on the old machines and picked up some salt water taffy and went home.
The boys both crashed in the car on the way home..:)
The next day we dismantled our notebooks, and I pulled out all the brochures, and printed off pictures, and we made full size notebooks, they turned out wonderful and I bound them with the filo binder I bought a few years ago.
I will post pictures of them when I take them, as for some reason the scanner won't work with my Mac. |

Sep. 23, 2007 Teach Ordinal Numbers
Here is what we did to learn ordinal numbers (ds age 5) - we are using Saxon Math 1
On Friday this is what I thought-
DS#1 is a bit stuck on learning first, second third fourth.
He knows his letters and numbers but can't read yet.
He is understanding concepts like the first one in the door.. but when it is on a piece of paper he doesn't always recognize the left to right direct.. that first is on the left.
We are doing car races, The winner who wins first goes on the #1 and so on. 1st-3rd". We put the cars on labeled paper that is labeled left to right. Doing Saxon activities of chairs in a row (train) with stuffed animals joining and leaving the train and me directing which chair they go onto (first, second etc).
We took Saturday off from Saxon Math to focus on Ordinal Numbers -
I didn't get much practical tips, just talk about the placements during the day etc. So I was on my own to think of hands on way to teach it. I really didn't want to move ahead as Saxon is a spiral math, and I knew my son could learn it, I just had to figure a way to teach him.
So- we started with 1 2 3 written on Josiah's white board. We did "point to the first, second third" in various orders. Then did 1-5. He still was having a hard time on some. Fourth he got easily as it sounded like FOUR.
So I drew a finish line before the #1 and said the number one is always first. We practiced some more. Then I thought of a trick.. I had the #2 talk, and said it is second, as it says "give me a second". This little saying has stuck with him, and he even remembered it the next day (today). For #3 I thought of a trick using the word THREE and the word THIRD. I sounded them out slowly and wrote them on the board. We had just learned the TH blend and so this was a perfect time to use it. Fourth he got easily, Fifth is a bit tricky and I will know more if he got it as I add more ordinal numbers.. Sixth is introduced Monday (tomorrow).
After giving him a few tricks we sat on the floor with a piece of paper with 1-5 written on it, and did the same as we had done before. I pulled out our pattern blocks and have him cover the numbers.. first number, 4th etc. Then I drew shapes underneath each letter. And said color the second shape, color the fifth shape.. etc. He struggled a bit, but instead of telling him any answers I told him the tricks again. I then made a folded sheet where I could write the shapes in multiple and fold it so he only saw one row at a time. We did about 4-5 more of these
ALL this training took about 30minutes, and he really loved it.
Today I pulled out the number line and drew some shapes on a piece of paper below it. He retained alot, he remembered the second, fourth and fifth right off. The third at first he thought was first.. but he corrected himself without me correcting him. A couple times I said count it out. And he would count first, second, third, fourth, fifth and then color the correct one.
So I would say we have success with him gaining an intro to Ordinal numbers, and I feel much more confident moving ahead in Saxon's spiral math.
Tomorrow I will do one or two shape lines, and one worksheet in addition to the Saxon curriculum. |

Sep. 20, 2007 Clowning Around
Another reason I love homeschooling!
The other day one of my father's workers phoned me, and asked if we could come for a Surprise Birthday Party Lunch for my Dad. He has been going through a hard time, and so I was so happy that I could come, with the boys.
Here they are in matching clothes. Isaac (on the left is holding the box we made from an old cereal box, and a used augratin potato box. We filled it with notepads the kids decorated and made, and a few items we picked up at Fred Meyer on the way to the Party.

On the way to the party I had remembered my Oldest mentioning he wanted to dress up like a clown. Since we don't celebrate Halloween, we had no need to wait. I bought a set of face paint. And when we got home from grocery shopping we painted our faces.
Josiah really is a clown.. the face is supposed to be sad, but looks like dripping blood in a couple pictures. When they saw themselves in the mirror they laughed so hard!
I love homeschooling!

Apr. 28, 2007 Homeschooling Update
I ordered the ACE Grade1 Paces - of Word Building, English and Social Studies. Not doing their Science as we do really good science on our own all the time. Also not doing their Math as we are doing Saxon Math. I just finally went ahead and bought the Math manipulative set, I did have a balance, and bears but needed some of the others, and it was actually cheaper buying it all together at http://www.the-book-cover.com, than separately for the few items I still needed.
Some of the Word Building paces are way to easy, but I figure if I copy pages for Josiah (4 1/2yo) that Isaac (3 1/2yo) can do them also.
We're going to do the ABC's with Ace and Christi - I am going to start in September, instead of waiting till January. It is a letter/sound memorization curriculum. It uses a different animal for each sound. Since we did a very similar curriculum for free last year http://www.letteroftheweek.com the boys both know most if not all the letters and their sounds (even Isaac). The curriculum is supposed to go 12-15 weeks, we will probably get it done before the end of the year. I need to make sure they pick up the other vowel sounds and the blends at the end of the curriculum. The binders are quite expensive and I do not think worth it for simply teaching the sounds of the letters, which I did, except that I used a free curriculum. I wouldn't be using this unless I had been given the binders. I do love the paces idea though. Josiah loves individual work.
Since it will only last till about December, Josiah does Word Building and English during that time. After December we will be doing Hooked on Phonics (continuing), continuing Saxon Math 1, and starting some first grade readers my mother gave me. For Isaac I'm going to use the other large Preschool workbook I have (we are doing one now, but it is a bit over his head in places, especially fine motor skills). I bought it for about $8 at Costco. He will be starting/continuing Hooked on Phonics, and will be doing Math activities with Josiah.
------
Currently I am writing my own unit studies which are going great. We just finished up Gardening for the month of April. Monday we start a new monthly unit of Water, for this next week we will be doing Spring/Weather/Rain - So discussing water in terms of weather and seasons. Some of the other works talking about the properties of water, and maritime life etc.
June we are doing Fine Feathered Friends.
Then I have an option of either doing FIAR (I want to get Volume 3, and eventually them all so we can do them in the summers). Or writing my own units, I don't want my littleuns to fall out of homeschooling habit. If I write my own I will do one for Marine Animals and Forest/Camping.

Mar. 12, 2007 Free homeschooling websites
copied from AngelNavyWife and angellwaves - Thanks ladies
STEP 1: Get library card, and check out their online catalog! Start a holds list. I make a list of all the books that have been recommended, and put them on my holds list, and pick up once a week. They have CDs DVDs as well, and mine has been known to actually have curriculums!
STEP 2: Order curriculum catalogs. Look up the books they sell that you'd like to try in your library catalog! My favorite catalogs (Timberdoodle, sonlight, Rod and Staff, Christian Liberty Press,Keepers of the Faith)
Step 3: Buy a good printer! Starts checking out these links.

Feb. 10, 2007 What are my Children's Talents?
According to a quiz I just took at http://montessorimom.com here are the boys' talents-
Josiah
What is your Child's Learning Talent?
by Montessorimom.com: Educational Resource
Your child has strong spatial ability. Your may be living with the next famous astronomer such as Carl Sagin or the next cutting edge artist such as Picasso or Frida Kahlo.
These children can spot everything, including candy hidden behind your back. They know where everything is located in the house. They are great at finding lost items for other family members. They think in pictures and forms.
These children enjoy jigsaw puzzles, mazes, and art activities. They draw proportions very accurately, and like to design using paper and pencil, clay, and visual art activities. They love illustrations in picture books, video games, movies, and photographs
Isaac-
What is your Child's Learning Talent?
by Montessorimom.com: Educational Resource
Your child has exceptional charisma and physical ability. You may be living with the next great athlete, Tiger Woods or Serena Williams. These children can even grown up to be actors. Don't be surprised if your child is the next Richard Burton or Nicole Kidman. Your adventurous child may even grow up to be the next Sally Ride or Neil Armstrong.
Your child loves to move, climb on things, and loves activity and adventure. These children are sometimes labeled hyper active when they don't have outlets for their energy.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These both are right on! Josiah will sit for a long time doing school work. Cutting pasting, painting, coloring etc etc. Isaac on the other hand would rather play catch all day. Excellent quiz

Feb. 4, 2007 Kindergarten Homeschooling
Yesterday I went to my friend Margie's. It is about a 45minute drive or so. She is really nice, and informative. I need to get a curriculum for Josiah for next year Kindergarten. Since I am doing year round school I won't start till next January, but if I look now the price will be much lower as I can find them on ebay or other cheaper book places. Speaking of that fetchbook.info is a great website to find the cheapest books. It includes the major booksellers, including some lesser known ones. So I search there, and then Powells. This is after searching our local feedstore borrowing Library.
Speaking of Libraries, to use the city library I will have to pay $50 a year. By the time the boys are in 2nd grade (reading fairly well), I am going to need to incur this expense. Till then I think I have enough from the feedstore, church library (our church is in an old school!), and what I or my family has collected. Since my mother was a 2nd grade teacher, and she saved all the books, there is actually quite a large selection.
After talking to Margie this is my current plan. Continue this year doing Unit Studies. I planned a years worth, each month changing the theme. Right now we are doing ourselves and our family. Last month we did Space.
Here is our Themes for 2007-
January- Space
February- Who you are, Family and Friends
March- Everything Water
April- Gardening
May- Frogs, Bugs and Slugs!
June- Fine Feathered Friends
July- Beach/Ocean/Marine Animals
August- Forest/Camping
September- Get Ready- includes- 5 sences, 4 food groups, review
October- Manners, Personal Safety and Hygiene
November & December- a bit up in the air still right now, we do alot with the holidays, so I might not do a unit here other than focusing on the holidays. Last year we talked about how different cultures celebrate Christmas, so will do the same in more depth this year. Also lots of cooking, and baking, and decorating, and FAMILY :). This is also when I get ready for the next year, planning lessons etc.
For Josiah in 2008, he is more than ready for a more structured curriculum, and Margie showed me some of what she is using. So I plan to get the ACE Paces (Accelerated Christian Education) http://www.schooloftomorrow.com/homeschool/lca.aspx for Josiah next year. Looks like he could start 1/2 way through kindergarten (Isaac could use the begining Paces). But to start at first grade he would need to read. So this year I need to focus on HOP (Hooked on Phonics). He loves doing book work, so this should be doable, I just needed to know where to focus my energy. Also I need to keep introducing numerals, he can count to 25 but doesn't know what the numbers look like. We are doing dot to dots, mazes and tracing pages that help. Also I got a nice, durable number line 1-25, and I picked up a book that is 1-125 with exercises I plan to photo copy. These I got at Rainbow Resource. Their catalog is about 2 inches thick!
I need to go to ebay and search for RR01 math/english and all, including the teacher's manual. Margie does have a friend that had the manual but she isn't sure if her friend still has it or not, but planned to call and ask.
I really like ACE for Kindergarten and 1st grade, but as of right now I am thinking of switching when Josiah hits 2nd grade. I really want to use Saxon Mathn, speaking of that I should check out what they start at. I am not sure how I will work it if the boys are in two different units (IE in science if one is talking about stars and the other worms. I might just do those subjects together, Science, History, Art, PE) and math and English separately. And get two of the higher level for Science, History, Social Studies etc. I can do Art and PE totally on my own. By about 3rd grade I could do English, Spelling, Handwriting etc on my own also. Most science I can do on my own, but I would really like a manual to keep me on track so I don't leave out something, and to give ideas for experiments etc. History and Social Studies I need a manual but would want to add in things, so this would be where unit studies would come in more handy.
This year for Josiah I need to focus on using HOP and teaching him to read, and numerals with some math. Near the end of the year I can get Rod and Staff books for about $2.50 each plus shipping that would help get him ready.
This year for Isaac I need to focus on fine motor skills and finish up teaching letters and sounds, and numerals. He works best with gross motor activities, so lots of games and field trips, art projects, and outside fun.
I also plan to subscribe to NGJ (No Greater Joy). It is a publication with fun homeschooling and child training ideas. The authors Micheal and Debie Pearl are quite controversial but I am not alarmed by them and they have great ideas.
Also this June or July Margie and I will go to the curriculum fair in Portland. Which will be much fun, and I will take lots of notes! |
