What's so funny??

Mentioned to the 4 males at the dinner table with me Thursday  night that I was wishing I had time to make a new bag for our upcoming vacation.   They all just stared at me for a second, then they all burst into laughter.   Seems they think I already have more than enough bags.    What do they know!  Besides, I can't help it if  I've got a case of bagaholitis.  (my sister has it too...must be genetic)

Anyway, I would really have loved to make something with fall colors, but I didn't have time to go into town to get fabric AND sew the bag, so I settled for what I had on hand.   I lined both the outer fabric and the inner fabric (which are a home dec fabric) with interfacing, so it's pretty sturdy.   For the handles, I used a long handle off an old, thrifted purse and just cut it in half.   I also took the magnetic "snaps" out of the old purse and inserted into this one, so it's got a closure. I made a pocket for inside that goes pretty much the width of the bag, then divided it into several smaller pockets.    It's intended as more of a tote bag than a purse-type bag.   I wanted to get  my current knitting project "Cozy" in there, plus still have room for a couple dishcloths to work on, as well as a couple magazines and our trip info.

I just kind of whipped it together, and it turned out nicer than I thought it would.   Those thrifted pink handles match perfectly!    Last time I sewed something this thick I had a little trouble, which I shouldn't, with my Janome.   It dawned on me that I should probably change the needle. Duh!  When I got the instruction book out, I also saw that I should really have a different needle in there anyway, for heavy-duty stuff.    Double duh!   Once I got that done, it sewed like a dream, even through the thickest layers.      The colors in this picture are a bit

washed-out, (I still don't have this blogging photography thing down yet) but it gives you the basic idea.    When I cut out the fabric, I forgot that the bottom panel would have some of its length taken away by the "boxing" of the bottom, so that's why it looks shorter than the other two.   Hopefully people (if they even notice) will think that I meant to do that.

Your bag is gorgous. Had you not pointed out your mistake I would have thought that you intended the bottom fabric to be shorter. Awesome!

I can't believe we used the SAME FABRICS! That's quite strange! It's not like they came together or anything (as far as I know)...They just happened to be in the broadcloth department of my local Joanns Fabrics. I like the way you used them!

Thanks for dropping by my blog,
