Random: potatoes, a playset, and a pup

This past weekend the vegetable garden got tilled up and the potatoes and onions were planted.     Over the years the size of the garden has varied dramatically, but I think this year's is about 20 feet by 30 feet.   And now to confess my dirty little secret - I really don't like to garden.   It may be seen as blasphemy coming from a farm wife (that's the impression I get sometimes) but it's the truth.   I love the idea of a garden...  but most of the time, working in the garden is hot and buggy, and usually in spite of all our work some nasty bug or weird fungus will ruin some of the crop anyway.

Boy, I sound like a big whiner-- just being honest though!   We had a HUGE garden a couple years ago and I think I got kinda burnt out.     It is nice to have some fresh goodies though, and I like to make tomato sauce for the freezer.   I've found with my back I have to be careful  how much time I spend in the veggie & flower gardens, so hopefully this size will be manageable for us.

Yesterday I had a little afternoon out for myself - got a haircut, went to the thrift store (yay, found some nice shorts for my skinny, long-legged boys that are so hard to fit!) and browsed a bit in the local antique mall.   An old friend (hey R if you're reading this, leave a comment)  has a booth there and I saw that she was having a sale - then I saw this playset and I couldn't resist it.   I knew the boys would flip when they saw it, and they did.   It's an old Marx set from 1968, so it's almost as old as me!     It's  like a suitcase that opens up and then  becomes part of the castle - I love things like that.  It came with this siege tower (they practically drooled at the sight of it, and something they tell me is called a ballista. )

They've already had lots of fun playing with this (especially as the ballista really shoots things!)
Max's idea of a good time is a little different - he's been going crazy now that spring has arrived and there are birds, squirrels, and rabbits out in the yard taunting him.

He seems to really think he can chase the squirrel up this tree, if only he tries hard enough!

Had to comment on your flea market purchase. I also love old toys like that and know my four-year-old son would absolutely love it. Great find! Aren't antique and second-hand stores fun? Have a great day! Julie

Oh man! A garden and a pup! You are living my dream. :)
And that bag from Beki would be the icing on the cake. Glad to see you are doing well, my friend.

Kelli

I also like the idea of a garden, but not the work itself. Max is hilarious. Caesar thinks that he can chase a squirrel, too.

I'm SO with you on the garden, so your blasphemy is safe with me. Although, it's not the heat, humidity and mosquitos that I mind so much, it's that for us city dwellers with smaller gardens, it seems like we spend so much on little plants, fertilizer, etc. -- and when you figure in the bugs that eat the crops it seems like it would just be cheaper to go buy them. But hey - you can't buy bat sized zucchini, can you LOL!

That little castle is awesome. When my boys were middle school age, they each had fun making a catapult -- they're easy to make by constructing a wood frame and the launcher part is a wooden spoon (you can probably find instructions online.) My oldest's teacher loved it so much he kept it for the rest of the year and used it to launch goodies to the kids when they correctly answered a question.

Isnt' it nice that it's finally warmed up enough to even think about a garden? It seems like it happened overnight!

That is an awesome castle. I'd want one for myself. ;)

I love fresh vegetables and stuff from a garden, but really how many tomotoes can one family eat? I know that when we move, we'll put in a garden, but I'm going to be swamped with veggies. At least Brandon will be willing to do the weeding (even thoughe doesn't know it yet. LOL)

I'm in the same catagory as you with the gardening unfortunately. It's sad because of living in such a farming comunity you'd think I'd like to spend time in the dirt, but I'm really not an outdoorsy type of girl at all anyway. My DH likes to garden and do yard work a lot, but we haven't had a garden ever. My BIL loves to garden, and is really good at it too.

Glad you had such a nice day out. What a neat set you found for your boys too. Max also looks like he has been having a great time enjoying this great weather we've been having around these parts :)

Ok, I totally hate to garden as well. I now throw in a couple of tomato plants for my tomato-potato chip sandwiches and call it good. (I hit the farmers market every weekend and support them!)
Max looks like he's having a great time!

We're skipping the vegetable garden this year. Last year was our worst garden ever, due to constant rain. Some years it's too much work. Sure gonna miss those homegrown tomatoes, though.

What a nice-size garden plot you have. I really appreciate your honest comment about gardening. I understand exactly what you mean about loving the "idea" of something but not necessarily the tasks involved themselves.

That play set you found is so fun. I adore castles and things.

YIKES I totally relate to the garden thing. I gave up several years ago. Always started out with a bang, then like you said it gets hot and buggy and it's the last place I want to be. Soooo I go to the local farmer market and buy fresh when I need it and I'm OK with that, LOL.. Love the playset.

That Max is adorable and like Cami he probably thinks he can do just about anything. Gotta give them credit - they don't let their size slow them down.

Hugs - Karen
