Just One More Wafer

Do you remember the Monty Python scene in the restaurant where a gluttonous man eats an enormous amount of food? After the man’s huge meal, the waiter offers him dessert. Here’s the conclusion of the scene:

Waiter:
And finally, monsieur, a wafer-thin mint.

Man: No.

Waiter: Oh sir! It's only a tiny little thin one.

The man continues to refuse the wafer.

Waiter: Oh sir, just, just one

Man: Oh all right. Just one.

Waiter: Just the one, sir... bon appetit...

The man puts the wafer in his mouth and vomits.

Did I warn you this was in bad taste? Hmm…I see I didn’t. Sorry about that. It is disgusting, it's true, but it does illustrate my point.

My point isn’t vomit, oh thank goodness, but that I am dealing with the JustOneMoreWafer Syndrome in my weekly schedule.

JustOneMore wonderful outside activity in our week, and something is going to spew. I know better than to overload ourselves with day-after-day commitments that require packed lunches, rushed commutes, tired kids, fat fees. Our days are bountiful and balanced, yet every fall I fall for the temptation of JustOneMoreWafer.

Ah, well. I'll deal with it, and the hectic schedule won't last more than the autumn season. I'll remind myself of JustOneMore piece of Monty Python wisdom:

"Always look on the bright side of life."

one more wafer

Why is it we force the one extra wafer on our kids and they are the ones that ultimately 'spew' it back up? What are the consequences for us? We have to clean up the mess. Don't wait till next fall to re-evaluate how many wafers are on your children's plate and decide if YOU can fit one more on THEIR plate - let them be kids this fall...and next fall.
