O, how much more doth beauty beauteous seem By that sweet ornament which truth doth give! The rose looks fair, but fairer we it deem For that sweet odour which doth in it live. The canker-blooms have full as deep a dye As the perfumed tincture of the roses, Hang on such thorns and play as wantonly When summer's breath their masked buds discloses: But, for their virtue only is their show, They live unwoo'd and unrespected fade, Die to themselves. Sweet roses do not so; Of their sweet deaths are sweetest odours made: And so of you, beauteous and lovely youth, When that shall fade, my verse distills your truth.
~Shakespeare

C.S.Lewis

Posted in Narnian Series

                              C.S. Lewis

Clive Staples Lewis ,known to his friends as Jack (A beloved dog of his childhood), was born in 1898, and was an strong atheist until he became a Christian when he was about thirty. He wrote several books on his conversion, his life, and Christianity. Some of the most renown are, Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, and Surprised by Joy. He also wrote the immensely popular children’s series The Chronicles of Narnia.

Later in life he married a fellow Christian with two sons, Joy Gresham, tragically, she died four years later from cancer. Lewis’ stepsons inherited his estate at his death.

C.S. Lewis remained a strong and faithful Christian for the rest of his life and is highly esteemed in the world of Christian literature.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

This was a short paragraph I wrote for school, and I thought while I'm on the subject of Narnia, I should do a post on C.S.Lewis.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this post, and Narnia in general,

I really enjoy Clive's writing, though I've only read the Chronicles. My sister has read the first book of his Sci-Fi Trilogy, The Silent Planet, I am planning on reading it soon. Bre (BreezyTulip) says it's really good. Thank you for the paragraph. :) I've skimmed through a biography on his life, I wish I could have met him . . .

May God Bless,

Hello Rose,

I'm really enjoying your Narnian posts! I have recently begun blogging even though I have been reading your blog for a while. I think you write very good summaries and opinions of books, movies, etc. The character sketches in The Magician's Nephew made me think a little more about what the characters are actually like! Right now, (regarding your C.S. Lewis post), I'm reading Mere Christianity. Its really an interesting book to read, due to "Jack's" clear and down-to-earth way of saying things. Good work on the Narnia series!

Nice to meet you,
~Hadley

P.S.- Just to let you know, I have added you to my friend's list.

Tuesday, December 4, 2007 - Movies vs. Books

Posted by rosewild

Hello! So you don't like the BBC Chronicles? I like them... but they did a better job on the new one so far as casting goes. Otherwise, they didn't do so great (I thought). They threw in too much that wasn't in the books. But I still enjoy it.
I don't think I have a favorite Chronicle... they're all so good! I think it's wonderful that C. S. Lewis wrote them - writing books can be difficult when you're doing a series! (Tough to keep everything in line. Or maybe I'm the only one that has that problem... :D)
I saw the Love Comes Softly movies before I read the book, so I was a movie fan beforehand. I enjoyed the first book, and thought that they really should've kept Clark the way he was in the book. I was really disappointed with some of the book material, though. I didn't think that it was the way things really would've been back in that time era - so I think that the books and the movies are kinda messed up, but I enjoy them all the same.
Well, I think that's enough from me!
Bye!
Emily

Hello Rose, Thank you for your comment! I haven't read a lot of C.S. Lewis's writings, but I do hope to read more in the future. A couple months ago I got his book on the Psalms, which has been interesting. I think I may do a search at the library for more of his works. :-)

Have a good day,
Mandy

Well... I can't remember for sure. It's been a long time since I read them. Maybe it's not so much the historical inaccuracy as the fact that I don't think that it's right. I guess that Willie's leaving Missie in town to have the baby is okay historically, but I just didn't think that it was very nice of him. And what was the girl's name? Nell or something? The way that she married the drunk... I didn't think that it was historically accurate that girls would do that - but maybe I'm off on my dates. Also, I don't think that it's good for authors to fill their writing with stuff like that, but maybe it's a personal conviction. And I think that ladies would have had more propriety than to eat tons of onions! Again... that was unnecessary to the book, too.
After reading the books, I wasn't sure why Janette Oke (spell that right?) is so popular other than her plot outlines were really good. I also wasn't sure about everything with Tom and the Indian girl. But... after thinking it through and talking to my mom, she said that most of it was probably my own personal preference. I read a lot about the Oregon trail for a book that I was writing, and I never ran into anything about loving an Indian or leaving your wife alone during her pregnancy... but of course the Oregon trail is different!
Anyhow... I'm not sure if I was very clear, but those were the things that were going through my mind! And the movies weren't historically accurate, either! I was really mad... Marty's bra straps kept showing, and HELLO! they didn't have bras back then! And as you mentioned, her short hair, etc etc.
I need to go eat lunch. Have a great afternoon and drop by again soon!
Emily
P.S. I decided to stay on HSB and just do duplicate posts on both xanga and HSB.

I am 15 now. I said it in a strange way, so I can see where it would be confusing. In my mind I had the idea of when you turn one, you've completed your 1st year of life. :)

I started Out of the Silent Planet the day before yesterday. I haven't gotten to spend as much time on it as I'd hoped. (*Caution* there are a couple of foul-mouthed men in the first few chapters).

Sorry about the apron, I haven't worked on it since my birthday. :( I probably won't post the giveaway until after Christmas, since it is quite a busy time. If you want to see the material, it is in the background of amibrain(username)'s blog. She really liked it so I put it in the background at a low opacity. :)

I hope you have a Merry Christmas!
