O, how much more doth beauty beauteous seem By that sweet ornament which truth doth give! The rose looks fair, but fairer we it deem For that sweet odour which doth in it live. The canker-blooms have full as deep a dye As the perfumed tincture of the roses, Hang on such thorns and play as wantonly When summer's breath their masked buds discloses: But, for their virtue only is their show, They live unwoo'd and unrespected fade, Die to themselves. Sweet roses do not so; Of their sweet deaths are sweetest odours made: And so of you, beauteous and lovely youth, When that shall fade, my verse distills your truth.
~Shakespeare

The Magician's Nephew

Posted in Narnian Series

This is the promised post on the Magician's Nephew by C.S.Lewis, to read more about my Narnian series please either click on the link to the entry category, or scroll down to the next page.

The Magician's Nephew is the first installment of the Chronicles of Narnia, rather, the prolouge to the rest of the books...the "Genesis" of Narnia.

                                ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

                                       Fledge (The Magicians Nephew).jpg

NARNIA. . . where horses sometimes grow wings and Talking  Beasts are called to life. . . a new world full of magic, where the adventures begin.

Digory and Polly meet and become friends one cold, wet summer in London. Their lives burst into adventure when Uncle Andrew, who thinks he is a magician, sends them hurtling to . . . somewhere else! They find their way to a new land ~Narnia! But they awaken an evil sorceress, Polly and Digory are sent on a quest to stop her before she destroys the world they've just discovered!

                                         - from The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis

                              ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I love the Magician's Nephew, and the plot in general. It is different from the other six books in the series because quite a bit of it is in reference to the other books. Also the majority of the Magician's Nephew takes place in England which is quite the opposite from the others.

The first character we meet is Polly Plummer a little girl who lives next door to a boy the same age called Digory Kirke (Later known as Professor Kirke). They start their life-long friendship when she finds Digory outside crying because his mother is very sick and therefore he has to live with his Aunt and Uncle (brother & sister).  After Digory and Polly become friends they decide to go exploring in the attics connecting the long row of houses that they live in. After a series of peculiar events started by Digory's Uncle Andrew, Digory is forced to follow Polly into another unknown world to bring her back. Upon entering this other dimension they stumble upon many misadventures, including falling (literally) into a dying world, discovering an evil and beautiful witch/emporeress (more on her later), watch a new world be 'born', and save Uncle Andrew from himself. I thoroughly enjoy this book in the series and it is absolutely necessary to read it to completely grasp the beginning and end of Narnia....

~Brief Character Sketches on the main Characters~

Polly is a little girl who lives in London ,England. She is dependable and loyal, although she has a stubborn streak and is a little bossy at times, and ,for the record, Polly disliked the Witch from the very beginning. The only time she reappears in the other books is in a the Last Battle along with the other seven friends of Narnia.Out of all the Narnian heroines I would have to say I'm probably most like Polly....

Digory is the little boy who lives next door to Polly Plummer. He is adventureous, witty, and a little bit of a smart mouth, he also loves his mother very much. Digory is also in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, The Last Battle, and he is mentioned in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

Uncle Andrew is Digory's absurd Uncle (his mother's brother). He believes himself to be a Magician of sorts, and in a sense he is, hence the title of the book. He is selfish, crazy, and has a penchant for brandy and gambling. He doesn't reappear in any other books.

Jadis is the Witch/Empress that Digory accidently brings with him to London, and Narnia. She is evil, wicked, and beautiful. She enters the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe as The White Witch. She is the Emerald Witch in the Silver Chair, and she never actually dies (her immortality is explained in the Magician's Nephew) except when Narnia itself comes to an end. It is also hinted at that she has the ability to shape shift. She represents Satan in the Chronicles of Narnia.

Aslan is the creator/Lord of Narnia, and the rest of the world(s) really. He is Jesus, as he tells to the cabby* and in other similar references. Need I say more? He is in all of the other Narnian books.

My favourite quotes from  The Magician's Nephew:

“Pooh! Grown-ups are always thinking up uninteresting explanations!”

                                       - Digory Kirke

* "Son",said Aslan to the Cabby,"I have known you long. Do you know me?" "Well, no, sir", said the Cabby, "Leastways, not in an ordinary manner of speaking. Yet, I feel somehow, if I may make so free, as 'ow we've met before." "It is well," Said the Lion. "You know better than you think you know, and you shall live to know me better yet....."

The young woman had apparently been in the middle of a washing day, for she wore an apron, her sleeves were rolled up to the elbow, and there were soapsuds on her hands. If she had time to put on her good clothes (her best hat had imitation cherries on it) she would have looked dreadful, but as it was she looked rather nice.

-Description of Helen/Nellie , the first queen of Narnia

Well, I hope you enjoyed the first of my Narnian posts.

                Love to hear from you,

                                  Rebekah Rose

Introduction to the Narnian Posts

Posted in Narnian Series

I have just recently begun the tradition of reading the entire Chronicles of Narnia every year, starting at least a month before Christmas. The Chronicles of Narnia are my favorite series, and the Lion, the Witch, and The Wardrobe is my favorite book. So, I decided to do a series of posts about them. I warn you, this is going to be a long series...I may not finish it until after Christmas.

I'm going to post my thoughts and opinions on all of the books, and it's Characters. I'm also contemplating doing posts on the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe Movie*, two posts on the heros and heroines of all of the books, my favorite costumes, my thoughts on the new Prince Caspian movie, and perhaps a post on C.S.Lewis. I may add a few more, and take a few away, but that is generally what I have planned.

*Note, I am never ,besides this, going to mention or even hint at the BBC versions of the Chronicles. I HATE those.

                              Love to hear from you,

                                             Rebekah Rose
