Homeschooling in the Rose Garden

• Oct. 19, 2008 - Fun lunch stuff

I am a bit of an October nut.  I hate the Halloween stuff... by this I mean, I hate the freaky, fake blood, jump out and scare you, decapitated heads hanging from trees in peoples lawns type stuff.  But the falling leaves, worms, bugs, bird feeders, soup, naked trees, pumpkin, nocturnal animals... well, that side of October, I can't get enough.

In light of this, I had a bunch of October food things planned.  Baking pumpkin pie from scratch (meaning from a whole pumpkin.) is something we do every year... pumpkin muffins, squash with butter and brown sugar.  Yes... traditions run strong this time of year for me.  To throw a bit of fun in the mix, I have been adding in things like this sandwich.

The kids spent all of lunch time talking about where the worms came from that showed up in their sandwiches.  They finally decided that they were martian worms from Mars, and these worms drank toliet water and ate puppies.  It always helps with the gross factor to have a teenage boy in the house.  lol...  Fun stuff.  :)

How you doing Marty?

Almost there Bob, is she coming back yet?

Would you mind passing on to me your recipe for that pumpkin pie? My kids would be thrilled. We got two pumpkins- 41 pounds and 51 pounds. We are carving them tomorrow and I would really like to use all the insides. If you can't, don't fret. I can get one off the web. I just thought I would ask because you must have a fantastic recipe to do it every year. Have a great day.

This is so fun. I like this time of year too.

I make Sandwich snakes out of bread dough and paint them with egg yolk food coloring paint and use red and yellow peppers cut for the eyes and forked tongue.

Making the bread, painting it, baking it untill it is twice the size, then cutting it open to fill it with all sorts of sandwich fillings, then eating it! OH YAH! It’s Halloween!

That was me. Don't know why, but this website won't keep me signed in... even if I am signed in a different window that very moment. Oh well...

Sandwiches look fun.

I know what you mean about halloween. We recently went to a fun park, and they had scary dummies hanging from all the buildings, and even in the farmyard area aswell - thankfully my youngest didnt take any notice of them.

Love pumpkin recipes, we are going to try and get round to making pumpkin bread today.

Hope you have a good week.
