A summer surprise

Posted in Nature
We escaped out to a local piece of bush to the east of where we live. Last  time my husband had been up there, taking some kids on an ecology field trip he had noticed a new bird. So we were going to investigate.

The bird was a White Head. They are fairly rare and I hadn't seen one before so it was neat to finally get up to the bush and see it today.  Even better there were several off them including a number of baby ones still being feed by mum and dad.

At the same time we also came across several NZ Tomtits.  This is a fairly young bird - he will be black and white when he is fully grown.

We were surrounded by the songs of the Bellbirds and watched the Tuis flying overhead.

And enjoyed the curious Fantails without which no bush walk would be complete.

It was a good way to leave a busy year behind and kick start summer.

About Me

Reflections on life and homeschooling from my rose garden. My focus is my three kids, Dancing Butterfly, Einstein and Happy-Feet, the way God speaks into our lives, and the lessons we learn. Officially we us a Classical Approach to our home-school, but I think that's often just the framework for my sanity. As we live in New Zealand, and enjoy nature and photography theirs likely to be a little of our local nature studies as well.
