Drip Drop - opps

Posted in Nature
Yesterday it started to rain, and today has continued not simply the gentle drizzle that dampened the top of the soil in the last couple of weeks but steady real rain.

Unfortunately this has left us with a series of drips in the house - The skylight in the kitchen has sprung a leak, as has the window in the lounge. Nothing serious and nothing that my husband wont fix in the weekend, but drips in the meantime and an excuse for 2 enthusiastic kids to find reasons not to do school.  Some days.....

Then again the farmers are happy. They had enough gentle stuff yesterday that hopefully this simply soaks into the earth. The power company must be happy - they must have been wondering what would happened if lake levels dropped much more, after all our lake is over a meter light at the moment - and its not a small lake.

Rain

Posted in Nature
After weeks of  hot, overcast weather, the odd patch of drizzle and dry burnt grass it feels like Autumn has come.  The skies have opened and rain has been falling since the early hours. I woke to the drip drip drip of the rain leaking in our bay  window . It only does this about once a year,  in autumn so I think it relates to having the small windows at the top open.

I've been looking forward to the change in seasons - in truth I've been looking forward to the clear, fine days of autumn, this hot, overcast dry weather, the promise of rain but no rain was starting to get frustrating.

Morning Escape

Posted in Nature
Down at the lake,
Water lapping,
Sunlight dancing.

Sparrows fighting over the last crumbs of bread,
The ducks fed, they drink,
Look hopefully for more
Mill around waiting,
Slowly depart.

The lake is quiet again.
I'm sitting below the normal water mark,
A dry summer - the lake a meter down,
Algae dead on the beach,
Lake grass under the water,
Exposed to sunlight gain new life.

Around me,
Ducks preening,
Children settling
A peaceful sunny start,
Patiently waiting for rain.

Yes,  on Wed morning down at the lake, I forgot my camera.  Which maybe explains why I had time to reflect.

An ugly ducking?

Posted in Nature
We saw this mummy duck with her three little black babies and one much larger grey cygnet when we were walking the other evening.

A summer surprise

Posted in Nature
We escaped out to a local piece of bush to the east of where we live. Last  time my husband had been up there, taking some kids on an ecology field trip he had noticed a new bird. So we were going to investigate.

The bird was a White Head. They are fairly rare and I hadn't seen one before so it was neat to finally get up to the bush and see it today.  Even better there were several off them including a number of baby ones still being feed by mum and dad.

At the same time we also came across several NZ Tomtits.  This is a fairly young bird - he will be black and white when he is fully grown.

We were surrounded by the songs of the Bellbirds and watched the Tuis flying overhead.

And enjoyed the curious Fantails without which no bush walk would be complete.

It was a good way to leave a busy year behind and kick start summer.

Photo's sorted ...

Posted in Nature

It's nice to have sorted out how to add photos to this page - the brown was nice, but well brown....

This was the trial photo that my husband uploaded for me as a test. Its from our camping trip last year - a South Island Kea - known for removing rubber from cars at any or the  tourist destinations in the Southern Alps. They are friendly, cheeky, and as much as you know that you shouldn't encourage them, fun to see wandering the carparks.  This one was up in Arthur's Pass,  we were recovering from having snow on the tent  - not that we usually camp in snow, but January here is meant to be summer!

About Me

Reflections on life and homeschooling from my rose garden. My focus is my three kids, Dancing Butterfly, Einstein and Happy-Feet, the way God speaks into our lives, and the lessons we learn. Officially we us a Classical Approach to our home-school, but I think that's often just the framework for my sanity. As we live in New Zealand, and enjoy nature and photography theirs likely to be a little of our local nature studies as well.
