For an explanation of Categories, please see: How to Blog... What are categories and why would I use them?

Using categories for you blog entries is easy once you understand the steps.
  • Add a new Category to your account
  • Mark the entry with the Category name
Okay, okay... you want to know "How" to do this... here it goes...

Login to your account.
Click on "Manage Categories" in the side bar.
Click on "Add Category".
Type the category name.
Click on "Add Category".

Repeat the above steps if you want to add several categories.

Once you have added the categories to your account you will be able to apply them to your entries.

Click on "Add New Entry" or "View Entries" and "Edit" an existing entry.
Scroll down to just below the entry window and look for "Entry Category".
The default is none.
Click on the down arrow to the left of the category name.
Hover your mouse over the appropriate category name that you have entered into your account and Click.
Save your entry as normal.

View your blog page to find the entry that you have just modified and look for the category name.  It should be displayed and CLICKABLE!  (are you excited?  having fun yet?)

Click on the category name in your entry and your blog will now display the entries that are in this category.  The number of entries displayed from this category will be limited to the number of entries that are shown on your home page.  So, if you normally show 5 entries on your home page, only 5 can be shown on your category page.  Most layouts will show a next/last options that you can click on, but it WON'T take you to the next set of entries in this category.  Sorry.  It will take you to your normal Page2.  (It's a limit of the system.)

There are 2 ways around this limit.  You can make your categories specific enough to not have the older posts fall off the bottom or you can change your "Entries Per Page" setting in your "General Setting" to a larger number.  Please don't make this number too large or your pages will take forever to load and remember some people have dial-up internet.

Also, you can check the number of entries in each category under the "Manage Categories" screen.  If you find that a category is growing too large, you might want to split it into more specific topics.

If you would like to create sub-categories and have them listed on your sidebar, please contact me for design work.   Your important posts will be easily accessible in the future and you won't be limited by the "Entries Per Page" issue.

As always.... if you find this entry helpful please leave a comment... blah blah blah...
Thanks!

UPDATE:   We have found that not all of the standard templates will display categories within your entries.  If you would like to discuss your options to overcome this, please contact me.  My email addy is on the sidebar.  Thanks.

Thank you. I had figured out how to create the categories but could not figure out how to put my old entries into them. I am going to try it right now.

You saw the Categories????? I went ahead and did what you said but when I checked all my posts were still in the view entries and my blog did not show any categories on the side bar.

This has me puzzled, lol I can answer questions concerning natural products and herbs, but when it comes to the computer I cannot figure it out.

It appears that some of the standard templates don't display the categories. Sorry. I guess that whoever programmed those layouts decided to not include them.

None of the standard template will display categories in the sidebar. The way that HSB's blogging system doesn't seem to allow for this. As a web designer, I can modify your blog's layout to include things like categories in the sidebar, but there is no easy way to explain how to modify HTML code. Sorry.

Cysco... On your blog I saw the entry... We are sooooo excited!!!! Posted in Ramblings
Ramblings is the category. If you click on it you will see other posts in that category.
Also you said that "all my posts were still in the view entries". Your post will stay in the "View Entries". When you check the "Manage Categories" screen you will be show only the number of entries in that category, not the actual entries. This information is handy only to tell if a category is getting too large.

OurLittleSchoolRoom... Sorry that the template that you are using doesn't allow for categories to be displayed. If you would like to contact me, I would love to design your site. My email addy is in the sidebar.

I hope that this clears up some confusion. Thanks!

When I tried to do categories I could not seen to NOT have it appear in my main blog as well. Is it possible to only have it appear in the categores section and NOT the main page as well?
Blessings,
Andrea

From the techno-challenged
From the techno-challenged
Okay, I will admit my own knowledge gaps here. I, too, didn't think my blog added my categories and so I emailed Ronda. Poor Ronda. Well, if I had read more closely, I would have seen that she DID explain it would add my categories, just not in the sidebar...Or, if I had noticed more closely on my own blog that I had categories added at the bottom of my posts....But, thankfully, Ronda redirected my poor techno-challenged eyes (and brain) to this.
So, note to self....Always read Ronda's instructions more carefully and also read my own blog more closely and maybe I won't miss these things! :-)
Hope this helps anyone out there, but I do think I may win the prize for most techno-challenged! And, remember, Ronda is available to help you, answer questions, redesign your blog, etc., etc....She is the BEST!
Thanks for once again putting up with me, Ronda!

Ronda,
So, what you are saying is that if you have a standard template from HSB the category thing does not work? So if you want categories you need to modify your template, which requires an IQ of 220 and a PHD, correct? ;)

clear up some confusion
clear up some confusion
To get the category list to display in the sidebar you will need to modify the template code (or have me do it). I think that there was some confusion about what categories are and how to use them. Please read my post (also linked in my sidebar) for an explaination that will clear this up.

GenesisFamily please look at your "Jun. 22, 2006 - The Journal or The Journey!". It is showing that it is "Posted in Family" which is how your template displays your categories.
