About Me

My husband James and I have been married for 23 years, and we live in the beautiful Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee. We have 4 daughters, Ashley- 22, Briana-19, Marissa-11, and Daniella-7. This is our 15th year of homeschooling. I enjoy scrapbooking, reading, camping, games with my family, and Bible study. My most favorite place on earth is sitting on a white sandy beach with the "sand between my toes", listening to the waves splash on shore. Our family is also passionate about adoption, Guatemala, and missions.

You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy;
Jun. 9, 2008
Charleston

Posted in Life Happenings

James and I are back from our Charleston trip, and we had a GREAT time.  I do think, though, that South Carolina has to be the most humid place on earth!  I grew up in Mississippi....maybe I've just forgotten what it's like.  In spite of the high 90's and the humidity, we had a lot of fun.

On Wednesday, drove over to Sullivan's Island, walked out to the Atlantic for a few mintues, and drove to Isle of Palms (only about 20 min. from the hotel).

Lighthouse at Sullivan's Island

We decided to drive over to Georgetown, which is one of the places we thought about staying.  That took longer than we wanted, but we were glad we hadn't stayed there.  It's a quaint little place to walk through~once.  We walked down the pier at the marina.

Hmmm... that sign was a surprise.  We never found any, though.

Our hotel sat on the harbor, which I guess is actually the Cooper River.  We could see historic Charleston across the way.  At the far right of the picture, to the right of the tikki hut, is where we sat at night watching the lights of the boats and listening to the waves lap against the rocks.

view toward Charleston from the hotel pier

Fort Sumter, with a telephoto, from the pier

Sailboats at the hotel marina.  You can just barely see the crescent moon in the center of the picture.

To put the size of this ship in perspective~~all of those "little" boxes stacked on there are train cars.  That's our hotel back behind the ship.

Right next to the hotel marina was this.

The Yorktown is an aircraft carrier.  There was also a destoyer, submarine, and Coastguard cutter.

The bridge to take us over to Charleston

The 2nd day we spent walking Charleston.  Our first stop was shopping at the market.  This is 3 or 4 long buildings that were originally slave markets before the war.

The gate of this church

Many of the houses are like this.  The little driveways and gardens between the houses are just as fascinating as the houses.

Most of the other houses look like this.  That door is not actually the front door to the house.  It opens up to a huge porch just like the one on the 2nd floor.

There are a few cobblestone streets and a few brick ones.

We eventually made our way to Battery Park~beautiful, shady, peaceful, blissfully windy.  It is where the Ashley and Cooper Rivers meet and run into the Atlantic.

The last day we did very little~slept late, lazed around and read, sat on the swing out on the hotel beach and watched the boats, drove to the islands to find lunch, came back and took a nap.  That evening we went to Shem Creek, which is a marina with restaurants lining both sides.  It was so neat.  Amazingly, on a Friday night we got a waterview table without a reservation.

The 2nd roof line on the right is where we ate.  We watched the pelicans and sea gulls have a ball.  We also watched 3 dolphin play throughout the time we were there.

Am I the only one who literally cries every time they leave the water?
Thanks for sharing our trip.

Tisha

BEAUTIFUL pictures!!!
What a great trip. Sounds wonderfully relaxing. Mmmmm.... I want a trip like that. Someday!
I will put this place on our "to visit" list.
Our next beach trip - I HOPE - will be to Destin this fall. Our next trip is to the Creation Museum in a couple of weeks. That will be a good one for our family.
I do love to travel. Your pictures make me want to be near the water now!
I hop your having a great week!
Love,
Maria

Well, I don't cry when I leave the water, but I do really love it. I can just imagine what a wonderful time you had. I've never been to Charlston. Thanks for posting so many great pics! I really loved the ones of the houses/gates/doors. - Very pretty.

And humidity? Houston, Meridian, Charlston...I'd be willing to bet it's all the same. Y-u-c-k!

What a neat trip to Charleston you had. I enjoyed looking at all the pictures. I've never been to South Carolina before. I don't do too well with humidity though. Glad you were able to enjoy your trip despite the humidity.

I love those pictures! I can't believe you went to Sullivan Island and didn't get me a T-shirt. We've wanted to go there for years just to get a shirt with our name on it ;) My dad lived in Georgetown for years, I had to spend every summer there - and it was dreadfully boring. We hope to make a Charleston trip very soon - I just want to go look at the houses and dream... At least you have a plan to see the water soon! You just need to move to the water.

Those are absolutely lovely pictures! I think that I would love to live in one of those squished together houses. Though I would not love the heat. :)

~Annemarie

ps. I think that the bless-your-hearts that you get when you are preggo are different from normal ones.... :) Or maybe you are right and these hormones are messing with me more than I think.

I totally knew you were kidding me about the bless your heart! :) I am glad that you knew I was being silly about the "we" thing. After I posted it, I had second thoughts and really prayed that no one would take me too seriously.

My sister and her husband do the "we" thing and I rease her about it.

I have your site marked on my bloglines account, so you don't have to type it every time. :)

I just realized that I never commented on this post! I'm so glad you had a good time. The hotel looks beautiful.

I know what you mean about leaving the water. My grandmother used to say that she came alive when she was on the water. My father is the same way; he captains my aunt's boat on the Chesapeake and goes there every chance he gets. So, I guess I come by it honestly. :)

I'm at the beach again now for the next week or two. I hope to update my blog soon. The short version is that the first surgery date I could get is September 8th!! I'm not too happy about that one. At least I'm on a waiting list.

Have a wonderful day, my friend!

Denise

Wow. That's the only word that comes to mind. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous! I've longed to be near the water too. It's amazing. It looks as though you had a wonderful time for sight seeing. I'm so glad the two of you were able to share this time together. Hope you can get the chance to do it again sometime.

I guess I'm a bit late, but I hope you had a wonderful day and that it was filled with many blessings!

I love all your photos! The wrought iron was just wonderful in several of those. I just read a book about a blacksmith who made some really awesome gates and things and as soon as I find the title I will tell you more about it.

Have a great week!

So glad you came to our state to visit! The upstate is not as humid! We are 4 hrs away from Charleston-and love every visit! You took some great pics-and so many of the courtyards are blooming most of the year! The tropical plants can only grow from the Columbia area and further south in our state. We love the mountains and our homestead here on DUrbin Creek where we raise our bunnies! www.gardengatecards.us Hope you visit SC again!

Looks like you seen some beautiful scenery in Charleston. You had asked where we went on vacation....Myrtle Beach.....not too awful far from where you went:) And we're *hoping* to take a vacation really near to you in the early fall. But hoping is the key word here:) We love TN.
How are you handling your dd's *last recitals*? It makes me sad to think about my dd reaching adulthood and I know it will be here all too soon:( I went to your dd's blog and watched her dance recital videos. They did so good. I loved their pointe dance.
