Blogger Friend School

I have a confession to make; I have been delinquent in doing my Blogger Friend School assignments.  Here is the current one:

Hits & Misses

One thing we are using this year that I'm really enjoying is "The Story of the World Vol.2:The Middle Ages" by Susan Wise Bauer.  I preread this book before using it with my kids and some nights I couldn't put it down.  I, myself, have learned so much from this book, way more than I ever did using dry textbooks in school.  My kids seem to be retaining alot too.  Even my 5yr old who is still 'listening in', will remember things that I've read.  I like the activity book that goes along with it.  We don't do everything in it, but it has plenty of suggestions.  Some of the ideas are geared towards boys and some towards girls which I like because I have both.  In the past my dd has been turned off of histroy a little because it seemed 'boyish'.
Anyhow, I really like the way this book is written and it works well for us.

I don't have alot of 'misses'.  I try and research a curriculum or book pretty well before investing in it.  I will borrow or look for it used before spending money on something I'll reget.

One program I'm still trying out is Math-U-See.  I, personally, love it.  I wish it had been used when I was in school.  I'm not sure it's working for my daughter.  I did buy some books from Singapore to use this year, but it seemed hard to switch from one to the other, so we're sticking with Math-U-See.

One thing I remember hearing at a support group meeting, is that there is no perfect curriculum.  Even seasoned homeschoolers try new ones and make mistakes.  Some work for some families and some don't.  Alot depends on the parent's teaching style and and the children's learning style.

On different note: Can anyone help me on how to put a link in a post?  For example, above I would've liked to put a link to Susan Wise Bauer's site.  How can I make it so that all people have to do is click on the word to go to the link?

Blessings

I love the Story of the World books also. We are doing book 1 this year and will do book 2 next year. To click to another site, when you are typing in your post, if you look at the tool bar, you will a tiny planet Earth with a chain link on it. When you're in the spot that you want to include a link, hit that Earth and a box will pop up and ask for link name and URL. In the link name type the Words you want highlighted such as Susan Bauer Wise and in the URL spot put the link starting with http://. I always check my links when I preview it to make sure I did them right. If I did not make sense, please feel free to leave a comment on my blog asking for a better explaination.

Your comment on curriculum may be good for one family, but not for another is very true. The trick is to find what works for the different learning styles.

I didn't think to check if someone answered your question.

I type everything I want to say and then go back. If you wanted to link Mat U See, I would highlight that or whatever words you want linked, and then chose the icon with the world and a link. That brings up a box for you to put the link address in and it does it automatically for you.

I've heard really good things about Math U See.

I am using Google Reader to check up on all the BFS classmates and be able to see when they post an assignment. The problem is, it only works when the blog's owner has their RSS turned on. Your blog isn't showing any feed and I was wondering if you wouldn't mind turning your RSS on. It is under the setting in you blog control. If you don't wish to do this, I understand and thank you for your time.
