Camping trip

Last week we ventured on our second attempt at camping this Summer.
Our first trip was in June.  Our kids got sick, it rained and the tent trailer leaked.  We ended up coming home early.
This time we had a much more enjoyable experience.
It was our first Summer camping with all 6 kids.

We packed up and headed south of the border to Whidbey Island in Washington State.  Hubby & I had been there before, but it had been about 8 years since then.

I love Whidbey Island! Miles of shoreline, quaint towns, adorable country houses and a slow pace to life.

Our first campsite was at Deception Pass state park.  Our site was totally private, although the website said otherwise.

I just loved all of the tall trees! I could sit and stare at them all day!

We spent a wonderful day at the beach.

I know it looks cloudy, but it wasn't cold.  It was just the sea mist.  It showed up every morning and burned off in the afternoon.
I enjoyed this:

(The kids thought it was funny for me to take a picture of my feet!)
And the kids enjoyed this:

And there were plenty of these:

...which, of course, we had to bring some home!!

This was another beach at Deception Pass that we explored and I found some sea-glass!

We spent an afternoon exploring Fort Casey.  The boys really enjoyed that!

And the Admirality Lighthouse

We also stopped by the towns of Langley,

and Coupeville.

Both very quaint, with lovely little shops.
This was one of my favourite houses:

Something else I liked was all of the Arbutus trees with their noticeable red bark.

Dahlias that Hubby bought me at a roadside stand.

All in all, we had a great time, the kids thrived at being outside all day and we dropped into bed each night exhausted.
I came home to mountains of camping laundry, but it was all worth it!

Old Friends

When we first began homeschooling, the main advice that I was given was to read aloud to my kids.  And to not only read aloud, but to read good quality classics.
We started when my oldest daughter was 4 with Little House in the Big Woods.  We went on to read a couple others in that series(eventually to read them all!) and then when we started with Sonlight, we branched out to read other great books.
I have to say that our read aloud time is my favourite part of our homeschool day.  I love having the kids around me(or Hubby, as he takes part in this too!) all intently(well, most of them are attentive, I often have to provide things to keep the little ones busy!) listenning to some great tale.
We've read some great ones, Black Beauty, The Wind in the Willows are a couple of my favourites.

A couple of years ago we read Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink.  In that book Caddie's brother, Warren gets nervous about giving a speech in front of class.
He is supposed to say:

"If at first you don't succeed, try, try again."

He messes up and says:

"If at first you don't fricassee, fry, fry a hen.".

I often hear this quote being said or I'm the one saying it.
It has become part of our family life.
That's the neat thing about reading good books aloud together as a family, they(the books) become like old friends, members of our family themselves!

A New Use for Something Old

Our church has recently switched from pews to chairs.
People were having to sit out in the foyer and not wanting to turn people away, they found that they could fit more people  in the sanctuary with chairs.   It also made the sanctuary more usable for other purposes.
I was sad to see the pews go as I like the look of them better than chairs, but I understand the reason.
Anyhow, we were able to obtain an old pew.  Hubby wanted it more for posterity than actual necessity.  We already have benches that fit our kitchen table, so it went in our 'study', which is really just a glorified hallway that leads upstairs.

Well, I found a new use for an old pew!
It makes a great place to fold laundry!!

Recent Goings On Around Here

This is an update on some of what has been going on in our family life lately:

My Wee One is 5 months old today! He is no longer a newborn, but a full fledged baby! Time sure goes by fast! He is such a joy though.  He is quite social and smiles at everybody.  He has started to roll, but does not travel too far...yet!  He loves his siblings and they love him.  Pretty soon I'll be starting him on baby cereal-maybe that will help him sleep through the night!

Our kitty continues to settle in and has made herself part of the family.  My 2yr old is no longer scared of her.  In fact the cat has taken to sleeping in her bed!

We have been moving the kids around into new bedrooms and getting their rooms painted.  Magpie(the 2yr old) is now in a 'big-girl-bed' and hasn't fallen out once!  We now have 2 boys in one room, 2 boys in another and the 2 girls in their own room.  It seems to be working out well.
This one of the boy's rooms painted in John Deere green:

And the girls room in a lovely soft green:

And you can read this post to see the other boys bedroom.

In the midst of all of this re-arranging, I have been purging our closets.  So far I have filled 4 garbage bags of stuff(and I'm working on another one!) to give away.

That includes books, toys and kitchen stuff too.   It feels good to purge, purge, purge!!  I have also been given 2 generous donations of second hand clothing for the kids for which I am very thankful! God is our Faithful Provider!

For the next 4 weeks I am hosting a homeschoolers knitting class on Friday mornings.

They are being taught by fellow homeschool mom, who happens to be an extraordinary knitter!  Chickadee is taking the class with about 7-8 other girls and I am keeping the rest of the kids busy upstairs with science experiments, Lego and whatever else we can think of.   Our first class was last Friday and it went really well.  I hope we can do more things like this in our support group.

As far as homeschooling goes, we are well into our study of Africa using Africa: A Land of Hope by Donna Ward.
I really like it and I always know that the kids are learning when it seeps into their play.  One day my son announced that his father was a Taureg and he was going on a camel across the Sahara to catch up his caravan!

And  I made a new discovery this week! After blogging on HSB for 2 1/2 years, I have only just learned that I can upload photos directly from my computer to my posts!! And here I've been going back and forth between photobucket!!

Well, that's a glimpse of our life lately.  I am looking forward to Spring and signs of it's arrival.

 Thanks for stopping by!

Colour Choices

For Show & Tell this week, I'm sharing some of the changes we're making around here.

This is what happens when you let a 4 yr old pick the colours for his bedroom:

Photobucket

I guess that's not entirely true.  I actually picked the green.  I picked it when this was supposed to be the 'new baby's' room.
We since changed our minds about who was going to sleep where and we're in the middle of a big bedroom rearrange.

Anyhow, we had already bought the green and when it came time to paint, my son liked it too.  He also wanted his favourite colour; purple as well as brown.
Although I don't really like all of those colours together, it is only paint(so Hubby always says!  Having been a painter, it's not a big deal to change the colour in the future, if need be) and at least he(our son) is happy!

Here are a couple of shots with different lighting:

Musings From the Clothes Line

Photobucket

I was thrilled this Summer, when Hubby installed our new clothes line.  My main reason for being so, was that it would help bring down our hydro bill.
We had a fairly dry Summer and so I had lots of opportunities to hang my clothes out to dry, almost every weekday!  And here we are in September and still basking in the sunshine!

As I got into my Summer laundry routine, I began to enjoy this new chore.
I found that hanging clothes out to dry became a thoughtful time. Somehow, it became more relaxing than folding a load out of the dryer.
Maybe because it's a quiet chore, done outside, reminiscent of days gone by.
Then to watch things blowing in the breeze, only to take them down, sink my face into them and breathe in that fresh air scent.

'Thank-you, Mr. Sun, for your contribution to my housework.'
I don't know how much longer I'll be able to dry outside.
Once the Fall rains begin in this neck of the woods, we may not see Mr. Sun until Spring! (Even then, it's iffy!)
I will enjoy my last few days of fresh air drying, and look forward to when I'm able to break out the clothes pins once more!

Back to the Books!

Just a quick note to all who stop by here,
My blogging may slow down in the next little while.
We are officially 'back to the books', although it is going to take us all week to get routines going!
My baby is due in 4 weeks and I go to the doctor weekly now.
I'm in that 'getting ready' mode and we're still organizing bedrooms and finishing organizing the school corner.
So, my computer time may be a bit limited, like today, which was nil, until now.
But I couldn't post without a picture and so here are a couple of quotes I liked that I found while browsing Allposters(I found them a while ago, too busy to browse today!).

The Dryer Saga Continues

It looks like I'll be getting a renovated laundry room sooner than I expected!
Although, it won't be completed all that soon. We'll have to do what we can afford, as we can afford it.

When Hubby went to install the new washer & dryer, he found rotten floor.  So that needed to be ripped up and replaced.
We can't afford new linoleum right now, and so the sub floor he put down is temporary.

Photobucket
(Yucky old floor being ripped up!)

Then he discovered that because of the plumbing arrangement, we had to install a sink for drainage.  Currently, the washer drains into the sink and eventually he'll change that around.  We had a sink, waiting in the wings, so to speak, but when he went to install that, it wouldn't fit!

You see the back door opens into the laundry room and had just a hair's clearance before it would hit the dryer.  If the dryer door was open, the back door would hit it and easily break it.
So, we decided to stack the washer and dryer, which meant that Hubby had to rip out some shelving(something we thought we'd do down the road).  In doing that he found that all the screws had been stripped, which didn't make it very easy!

Photobucket
(New washer and dryer with shelves about to be ripped out!)

In stacking the washer and dryer, I hope to create a coat rack and shoe storage area.  We will also replace the shelving he knocked out, with a couple of cabinets.
These are the things that may not happen right away.

This weekend has turned out completely different than expected!
Oh the joys of being homeowners!!

Computers!!

Help Button on Computer Keyboard by Lee Frost
Help Button on Computer Keyboard

Just a quick note:

I have been off-line for the last few days because our computer died!
Thankfully, we have a new one and tonight is my first time on it.
However, we are still setting it up and I am getting used to a new keyboard.(You should see the typos that I am correcting like crazy as I go!)
I have to go change a setting somewhere, because it will not let me type contractions!  Every time I type the apostrophe it looks like this: è.
Thats because it is on a French setting!
Anyhow, you do not need to know all this, I am babbling...

I appreciate all of your comments, I will reply soon.

Monday

I have noticed lately that most of my posts are themed and as much as I like doing them, I haven't been making ordinary, every day kinds of posts.

So here's what's going on in our house lately:

I finally watched "Amazing Grace" on the weekend.  I'm probably the last person to see it! Anyhow, of course I thought it was a great movie.  I had already read a biography of William Wiberforce, and so I was familiar with the story.  I thought the acting was superb! Favourite part: When John Newton said "I know two things, I am a sinner and Jesus Christ is my Savior." And the bagpipes at the end gave me shivers.

I also watched "Anne of Green Gables" for the umpteenth time! And no matter how often I see it, I still cry, all of the way through it!  This was the first time the kids had seen it though.  I wanted my dd to read the book before watching it and she's working her way through the series right now.

The part that makes me cry the most: Not when Matthew dies, but when Matthew and Marilla are at the train station and Anne is leaving for college and Marilla says: "It was Providence, He knew we needed her."  I'm choking up just thinking about it!

As far as this week goes, I have more homeschool book orders to make.  I think I've decided on everything.  One thing I am looking for is a calligraphy instruction book.  Dd wants to learn calligraphy.  I've looked at the Getty-Dubay italic books, but that's a whole penmanship curriculum and I just want a simple guidebook that she can work through.  Any suggestions?

I'm always a little nervous when I'm ordering books.  It has nothing to do with the books, it's spending the money! Of course it's always exciting when they come!

I organized a homeschool park day this week.  I want everyone to stay connected over the Summer. The weather should be good, I just hope people can make it!

There is a local fair this weekend and the kids are entering different crafts.  So they are busy getting those ready.  I'll post pictures of them later.

And I hope to get some trees this week! That will be very exciting for me! I love trees!! On one side of our yard there is only a chain link fence between us and the neighbours. It doesn't offer much privacy.  We are planting(well we're not doing the actual planting ourselves, a landscaper friend is doing it) a row of cedar hedging trees all along one side.  It will also give me something green to look at!

I'm also approaching 30 weeks in my pregnancy! Where did the time go?
I'll give a pregnancy update later.

So, that's what is in my brain today.  Thanks for stopping by and reading the monotonous details of my life!

And of course, I can't let this post go by without a picture:

My Weekend

This is my official report of last weekend.  As some of you may know, I met up with Canadagirl and we spent Friday and Saturday at a homeschool convention.
It was great to meet her and see the person behind the blog.  It was a good reminder that there are real, live people, with life stories, thoughts and feelings, behind what we see on these blogs.

Anyhow, Mary(Canadagirl) is a very nice person(which is easy to tell from her blog!) and she graciously shared her beading hobby with my dd, who is now eager to take up the trade! (If you scroll down you'll see the necklace dd made.) She also blessed me with a bookmark....
Photobucket
and some her handmade votives, which I've already put to use on my kitchen table centerpiece.
Photobucket
Our kids only met for a short while, but they seemed to hit it off really quickly, even though two of her sons are older than mine.

The conference was good, but I have to admit that it was exhausting.  Especially for me, being pregnant and on my feet for two days!
I always go to these things with a list of what I'm looking for so I'm not wandering around aimlessly, even so it can be pretty overwhelming!
You think you've seen all the books there is to see and then you find a little gem that you may have never found if you hadn't stopped to look!

These are the books I bought for my homeschool support group library:
Photobucket

In case you can't read all the titles, they are:

The Orchestra by Peter Ustinov, this is actually a CD, we used to have it on tape and my kids love it.  He narrates through all of the different parts of an orchestra and the instruments and for each one, there is a piece of music that highlights that instrument.

Hold on to Your Kids by Gordon Neufeld Ph.D and Gabor Mate MD, I've heard alot about this book, but haven't yet read it.  The subtitle reads "Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers".  Hmmm...very intriguing indeed! I think I'm going to like what they have to say already!

The Myth of Ability by John Mighton , This subtitle says: "Nuturing Mathematical Talent in Every Child".  I'm looking forward to getting into this book, because I did not do well in Math growing up.  Apparently, neither did the author, but he now has a degree in Mathematics! He discovered that children who struggled in Math, struggled because of the way it had been taught.  He has since written his own Math curriculum and it's becoming very popular with homeschoolers.
JUMP Math

How to Read a Book by Mortimer J. Adler & Charles Van Doren , I thought this was a great title because it's a book on how to read a book!
Somebody recommended it and so I'm going to check it out.
Right-Brained Children in a Left-Brained World by Jeffrey Leed,M.A.T. and Laurie Parsons , "Unlocking the Potential of Your ADD Child", this caught my attention because I think I have one of these and I want all the help I can get in how to approach learning with him.
Learning in Spite of Labels by Joyce Herzog , Canadagirl actually recommended this book to me and I hope others in our group will find it helpful.

Mr Pipes Comes to America by Douglas Bond , this author was recommended to me as well and in this book he tells the story of some famous American hymn writers.
Duncans War also by Douglas Bond a histrical fiction novel that takes place in the time of 17 century Scotland, this is the first in a series, I'm hoping it will appeal to my son.
Season's of a Mother's Heart by Sally Clarkson , I love the writing of Sally Clarkson and it's always good to have something for us as moms, for encouragement.

The Hear of Wisdom by Robin Samson Canadagirl recommended this book as well and I've heard a lot about it in the last year or two.  I've already started to skim through this one and even if you don't follow the Heart of Wisdom teaching approach, there is still good stuff in here!

So, I have all Summer to review these books, guess I better get started!
If you've read any of them, let me know!

As for the seminars I went to, I heard
Pat Farenga speak on Learning Without Curriculum (gasp!), Allan Garneau
speak on The Erosion of Childhood (a very good message that I wish more could hear!) and Thomas Armstrong speak on The Myth of Add (very informative!).

I had a good weekend, and the conference gave me lots to think about.  As I mentioned in a post below, one of the main things that came to me was that God gave me the children that I have and He knows what they need.  I am ultimately accountable to Him for how I teach and raise them and I need to rely on Him to show me what we need to be doing in our homeschool.

Thanks for stopping by today,
blessings to you!

Busy Week

We're in the middle of a busy week.

Yesterday my 7yr old son had day surgery.  He had to have a circumc*sion.  Poor little guy! Today he's sitting on the couch watching movies, eating ice-cream and jello.

This weekend is my daughter's dance recital and so we are also getting ready for that.  She goes to a Christian dance studio and the concert is always very beautiful and moving.

School is a little hit and miss these days and it will be for the next couple of weeks.  I plan to go until June 13th and even then I think we'll keep going with a few subjects over the Summer.  With having a baby due in the Fall, I know we won't be doing very much then.

Anyhow, I may not be around much the next few days, so I thought I'd leave you with some pictures of our walk last weekend.  We were on a horse trail around some hobby farms.

Sunday Afternoon

Well, I've managed to make it through the last couple of days without a nap.  Although I've probably needed one.  Today my son was supposed to race in a Soap Box Derby, but it was postponed due to the rain.
Hubby is in charge of the concession stand for the event, which raises money for the Summer camp that our church supports.
My job over the last few days was to bake cookies to sell there.
I started with my first batch on Thursday.

P1011024

P1011027

These are Smartie Cookies, mmm, Yum! I got the recipe from a recipe exchange I took part in a few years ago.  Originally it was for Chocolate Chips, but I substitute Smarties to make it fun for the kids.

I did not do any baking on Friday.
I did not do much of anything on Friday, I did not feel well.

On Saturday the baking resumed.
I baked....

P1011035

and baked...

P1011033

and baked.

P1011034

In the end, we had 183 cookies.  And that is after a little sampling, how can one refuse a warm cookie, fresh from the oven.  My kids were great helpers, although I wanted to do the 'dropping onto cookie sheet' part so that the sizes would be even.  I actually get a great deal of satisfaction from baking.  I love to do it.  I wonder why I don't more often?
The other two recipes I made were Skor Bar Cookies and White Chocolate Chip Chocolate Cookies.  I will have to post the recipes on another day as this post is taking a long time to do.

They will keep in my freezer till the Soap Box Derby next weekend and if I have time, I'll whip up some more during the week.

So, what did we do on a wet Sunday afternoon when our plans got canceled?
Why, we went to the zoo of course!
We weren't the only crazy people to dodge the raindrops, but this is the one photo I took as I didn't want the camera getting wet.

P1011037

In case that looks a little microscopic to you, those are lions.  We watched them get fed too.  Very cool.

I have a whiny toddler who needs my attention, and I see that my free flickr account has reached its limit.  I guess I'll have to switch to Photobucket.
Tonight I plan to enjoy the conclusion of Sense & Sensibility on Masterpiece Theater.  I'm trying hard not to compare it to Emma Thompson's version.

Thanks for visiting!

A Lovely Present!

I had the unique experience of having my birthday during the Easter weekend.  Apparently this will never happen again in my lifetime.
Anyhow, as part of my gift, Hubby gave me some 'time off'.  What more could I want?!
I had a lovely time, out by myself, browsing favourite thrift stores and finding a few bargains.
Uninterrupted shopping time is a gift in itself!
However, I came home to an even lovelier, unexpected surprise!

A new china cabinet!!
Well, it's not exactly new, but new to me.
We were given it last Summer and I honestly didn't think it looked like much.  Hubby had decided to put his Austin Mini collection in it(little cars, not full size!).
About a week ago, he asked me what colour I would choose, if we were ever to paint it.  I didn't really have any colour in mind, so I said "black".

When I walked in the front door, from my 'day out', Hubby and the kids unveiled the cabinet that they had spent the day painting!
I was completely surprised!  I had no idea they were going to do that for me!

Here it is, displaying my tea-cup collection:

P1011020

I opened the door as to not get the reflection in the glass.  I was in my PJ's when I took the photo!
This is something I have wanted for years!
Not a greedy kind of want, but a "one day it would be nice" kind of want.

Hubby went on to make a lovely salmon linguine for dinner(I love salmon!)
and my wonderful daughter made me a cheesecake for dessert(also my favourite!).

P1011012

Yum!!
I am so blessed!

Thanks for stopping by!

Oooops!

I think I killed my son's fish!

I cleaned his tank today, something I've done many times during his little life, and shortly thereafter he was laying sort of belly-up.  he was more 'side-up' really, and then he jerked around a few times and so we thought he was just 'playing'.  After a while, though, it was obvious our aquatic friend had 'breathed' his last.
He had a good life, swimming back and forth, and back and forth...
His official name was "King of Fishes", named by my son who was 4 at the time.  We, however, mostly called him "Fishy".
The above photo is not him, I could not take a picture of a dead fish.  I would feel somewhat disrespectful.  The picture is a good representation though, Fishy was just a little darker.

I'm not exactly sure that I killed him.
He was two weeks away from being 3 years old!  That's pretty good for a Betta fish, especially since they tell you to keep the receipt when you buy them, in case they die in 3 weeks!
So, he was old and his tank was in need of a cleaning.  I cleaned it just the same as I always have, but as Hubby said, maybe the shock of it was just too much.  Is it coincidence that he passed on just moments after exploring his clean tank? I guess we'll never know.
My son didn't appear too sad, actually hardly sad at all.  I think some of it he hid with laughter.
Yes, we will get more fish.  Everyone in our family has had turns owning them, I think it's my turn next.
Maybe someone else should clean the tank this time!

Renos

I posted about Monday's nature walk on my nature blog, so you can read about it here: My Father's World
Here are the before and after pictures of our utility room, except that it's still not complete.  At least we are making progress!

Before
P1010927

After
P1010993

It might be hard to tell, but we(Hubby) ripped up the carpet and painted the floor.  He also ripped out the furnace.  It's for the upstairs and we're not going to use it.  That's what the funny pipe sticking up out of the floor is from.  It's capped off, but we need a professional to come and remove it because it's connect to our gas fireplace.  And the light is just temporary! So is the boarded up doorway.  We have a sturdy metal door to install there yet.  It leads to the garage.

I
still have a mess of boxes to go through and organize on the shelves...maybe on the weekend...

I realize that this is a somewhat boring post, but thanks for visiting anyway!!

Monday's Musings

We have sunshine!!  This morning I'm forgoing all 'regular studies' and we're going to pack up our sketch books and go on a nature walk!  January and February can be quite dreary and so when a lovely sunny day comes along, like today, we must take full advantage.

Hubby spent most of the weekend renovating in our utility room.  Now it's my job to arrange all the boxes we had stored in there.  I'm not sure how soon I'll get to it, but everything is stacked in our study(where I sit, on the computer) so that's my motivation to get it cleaned up.   We now have an extra fridge and a freezer in the utility room and soon it will have an area for boots and coat storage as well.  Eventually we'd like to move the washer and dryer in there too, but that will be a big renovation, as it involves moving plumbing.

Well, I must get on with our morning and get ready to go.  I'll be sure to report on our day.  I also have to prepare for the book review I'm giving at our support group meeting tonight.

Have a great day!!
