Musings in Spring Weather
Our weather has finally taken a turn for the better, although it has been rather cold the last few days. Our family has been able to get out to see other homeschooling families much more. It is such a joy to fellowship with fellow homeschoolers. We are a different breed of people. We see the world in a different light. When we get together it is like being with family, as we are on the same wave length.
I recently met a family with ten children; nine born and one in the oven. What a joy to see so many children in one family. I spoke to one of my non-homeschooling friends and she almost had to sit down just thinking about all those kids. The contrast of how we see the world really hit me as I was talking to my non-homeschooling friend.
Our area has seen many new families. The greatest blessing is that many of them are homeschoolers. What a wonderful surprise to having more families in our community. Most of these families believe in the same values that most homeschoolers build their lives; God, family and then work.
Our discussions have turned to field trips and all the opportunities now that we are not knee deep in snow. I would love to hear from other homeschoolers about what field trips they have taken now that the weather is better. Please feel free to leave comments. |

Heading to Texas
I will be leaving for Texas early tomorrow morning. I am an Equine Experiential Learning Therapist and work with Family Camps that minister to families with Reactive Attachment Disorder children. I will be the Equine Director and working with just under 40 children and their families.
Any prayers would be appreciated. We have a hard much of kids to work with, but God is bigger and oh so good.
I will be offline until at least 24 March 08.
All His best,

"The fundamental theory of liberty upon which all governments in this Union repose excludes any general power of the state to standardize its children by forcing them to accept instruction from public teachers only. The child is not the mere creature of the state; those who nurture him and direct his destiny have the right, coupled with the high duty, to recognize and prepare him for additional obligations." (Pierce vs. Society of Sisters, 1922)
What In the World Is Going On In California?
By Karen Braun
By now, most homeschoolers across the country have heard about the California appellate court ruling handed down on February 28 ordering the children of Phillip and Mary Long to attend public school or a legally qualified private school. The judge's ruling surprised everyone and sparked a firestorm of concern among homeschoolers nationwide, many wondering if homeschooling had become illegal in California.
The Old Schoolhouse Magazine staff has been following the developments since World Net Daily first broke the story a week ago. In this Homeschool Minute, we would like to provide a brief summary of the events and offer links to various perspectives to help homeschoolers understand this ruling, how it impacts homeschoolers in California, and what homeschoolers across the nation can do to help.
To gain a better understanding of this case, it is necessary to note that prior to this ruling, the Long family had been involved with the juvenile court system regarding the care of their children. Such proceedings are confidential, and in most cases, a court-appointed attorney is provided to represent the interests of the minor children. The attorney representing two of the children was not satisfied with a ruling made by Superior Court Judge Stephen Marpet, who found the children's education to be "meager" but determined that Phillip and Mary Long have a constitutional right to school their children in their own home. The attorney for the children brought an appeal before the Second Court of Appeals of California.
The California Second Appellate Court in Los Angeles found that the Longs had not demonstrated that any of the exemptions to California's compulsory attendance applied to their children. The court reversed the finding of the Superior Court and ordered the children to attend public or a "legally qualified" private school. The court remanded the case back to the lower court for a hearing to determine if the family was in compliance with the law. The family plans on appealing this ruling decision to the California Supreme Court.
Read the complete court opinion here.
The ruling spurred reactions from attorneys representing various homeschool groups and interested parties across the country. The Homeschool Minute provides these links for informational purposes related to this case and does not necessarily endorse these sites.
Sunland Christian School. The Long children were enrolled in this school.
Pacific Justice Institute (PJI). These attorneys are representing Sunland Christian School and advising the family.
Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA). HSLDA presents several appeal options to reverse this ruling or diminish its impact upon California homeschoolers. There is a petition available for those interested in supporting the HSLDA's move to depublish the ruling.
National Home Education Legal Defense (NHELD). Attorney Deborah Stevenson offers a detailed and informative analysis of this case.
Several homeschool groups in California issued statements concerning this ruling:
Homeschool Association of California
California Homeschool Network
Christian Home Educators of California
Private and Home Educators of California
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger issued a statement in support of homeschooling:
"Every California child deserves a quality education and parents should have the right to decide what's best for their children. Parents should not be penalized for acting in the best interests of their children's education. This outrageous ruling must be overturned by the courts and if the courts don't protect parents' rights then, as elected officials, we will."
By the end of a long news week, the court decision reached the broader Christian community through a radio broadcast by Focus on the Family. Dr. Dobson discussed the California court case with several prominent guests.

French Radio interested in SHBE convention
Radio Canada is the French radio station that airs all over Canada. I was interviewed at our homeschooling convention SHBE. I am a native French woman married to an English speaking Canadian. We homeschool in English, but have a strong French component. This is true of many Canadians homeschoolers. The French make up 25% of the Canadian population.
The interview was fairly short, but the reporter was very interested in the approach of learning within a family atmosphere. She was also interested in the French (and Spanish) program that I have developed for homeschoolers. You can see my programs at www.TheEasyFrench.com and www.TheEasySpanish.com.

Tour of the Vet Clinic
We had a tour of a vet clinic today. We got to see a surgery. They discussed X-rays, blood under a microscope, caring for animals, how to become a vet and showed up some preserved organs. Well, at one point the tech pulled out some aborted kittens. Not the best in front of my six year old, but overall a very good tour.
This makes a very informative homeschooling trip. I would discuss what might not be appropriate for your group, like aborted kittens and the discussion of dogs greetings in detail.
I would love to hear about other interesting tours for homeschoolers.
Shalom,
Marie |

International Math Day
| HT to Jacqueling from Newfoundland who provided this information:
Did you know there was any such thing? I didn't, but I learned about it, and the cool website, from Denise at Let's Play Math.
Apparently World Math Day takes place on the first Wednesday in March - this year that is March 5. WorldMathDay.com invites people from around the world to join them in a "celebration of numbers". Individual students and/or classes of students can register, free of charge, at the World Math Day site to participate in a "quest to set a world record in answering mental arithmetic questions" on March 5, 2008. You can register now and practice at the site until the big day. Registration is fast and easy.
If you register as a school you can create accounts for each of your children/student ages 5-18. You get a sheet of sign-in cards to print and cut and distribute to your students. After World Math Day the site will forward the teacher a snapshot of how your students performed, as well as a full report of the event. Teachers can also access their accounts for student results at any time and can print out certificates for the students after the event.
The first thing students get to do is to create an avatar for themselves. Once that is done they can start to play. The computer searches the globe, and shows it on a world map, to find real life people for them to play against in mental arithmetic games. They get 60 seconds to answer as many questions as possible. The program has a ranking system that tracks how the student performs and matches them against students with similiar abilities. As you play you can gain points - the more you play the more points you get. Students can use these points to add special details to their avatars.
Besides opportunities for practicing basic math facts there is also the chance to learn about time zones and different places around the world as you take notice of where the people are that you are playing against at different times.
I hope you take the time to check it out. I think it's going to be fun. Let me know what you think.

Saskatchewan and Homeschooling
Saskatchewan is a great place to homeschool. We have a lot of freedom in being able to teach how and what we would like. We receive $500 per child per year and only have to fill our intention to homeschool (educational plan) and an end of the year report.
We are a friendly lot and love to do things together. Today I took my eight year old daughter to an art class at the local art gallery. The Godfrey Dean Art Gallery is open to doing many programs with homeschoolers.
We also run swimming lessons, when you can convince us to leave our houses at -50 degrees. We call that "stupid cold." This is the only time our household is allowed to use the word "stupid." We feel it is appropriate.
We have an annual homeschooling conference. This year it will be held in Regina. Until now it was held in Saskatoon.
More later; this was just an introduction. Please check out the photos of Saskatchewan that I posted. If you have any more that you would like to see added, please email me.
