Shangri La

Posted in Family

When I was a little girl I lived in Texas for a brief time.  Ever since then I have had a fascination with that place.  I use to think that I would live there one day.  But that does not seem to be in the near future.  So the subject of Texas keeps coming up at my house and I am beginning to think that maybe a trip there would satisfy me desire to live there.  There is so much going on in that state.  But I think Shangri La Gardens and Nature Center is one of those places you have to see for yourself.

With Earth Day right around the corner, tomarrow in fact, it is important to mention that this place has been one of only 50 projects in the world to earn U.S. Green Building Council's Platinum certification for LEED®-NC.  What does that mean you ask.  Well it means that it is one of the most earth friendly projects ever built.  Pretty cool for a place that looks to preserve nature.

Aren't these pictures great?  This is just a sample of the many different types of fauna and flora that can be found at these botanical gardens.  They also have a neat bird blind which gives you the opportunity to watch the herons nests.  The have a hand-on exhibit called the Nature Discovery Center.

Spiders of Shangri La      Mammals of Shangri La         Insects of Shangri La

It is easy to see from these pictures why I would love to visit the city of Orange, Texas.  This is the ultimate in Nature Studies.  Charlotte Mason would be oh so proud of a place like this.  There is so much to see at this place.  They also have a lot of great things for kids to do while there and while at home, including a webcam of the gardens and online games to play.

I am off to see what else the city of Orange, Texas has to offer.

Very pretty! I kind of need to take a trip to our gardens here for a little change of scenery. It won't be as wonderful as that, but I'm sure it will do my soul good. Thanks for the inspiration.

I'd love to visit Texas. It's one of the few states I've never been to.
