This weeksHeart of the Matter topic is "How do you schedule?"
I have really come a long way from how I began as far as scheduling goes. When I first started to homeschool we sat at the kitchen table every morning spending 15-30 minute increments on each subject. I was extremely scheduled. I would read about other homeschoolers who just kind of let school happen and it would totally freak me out.
This is funny to me now because this is how we do things around here. I don't schedule anything for school except a couple of extracurricular things such as art, field trips, and sports. School just gets filled in around our lives. One of the things I like best about homeschooling is being able to get distracted by life. And we can't overlook the fact that our kids are learning all the time.
It's true that Kalene and Richie are pretty good at being diligent about getting their schoolwork done. They are much better at staying focused on school than I am these days. So when they get up each day, if we don't already have something not realted to school to do, they just go ahead and start with their work. They each know what they need to do. So they do it.
I should add that while this is the norm at our house, I do have a lot of abdormal days as well. Days when Kalene just can't do anything but finish the book she is reading. Or days when Richie is way more interested in building the next gasoline free vehicle than doing science or math. Andbecause we school all the time it isn't a big deal if they spend their day doing school in non-traditional ways.
I love this saying I read one time (sorry I don't know the author)
Distractions are just opportunities in disguise.
