Homeschool Hands Awareness

Posted in Family

We went to a homeschool Ice Cream Social that was hosted by my friend Shelly.  It was so neat to see all different kinds of people all come together and have a great time.

There were games to play, a huge bouncehouse, and a 40 ft. ice cream sundae.  I have to admit that when I first heard of the sundae I thought it sounded a little gross.  All I could picture were all these kids eating ice cream sundaes out of the same big huge trough.  Thankfully Shelly knew what she was doing.

Yes, the sundae was made in a big huge trough (a lined piece of unused gutter to be exact).  But after the picture was taken we all scooped some of the sundae into our own bowls.  Richie ate so mush he said he felt sick afterwards.

The ice cream social was held at one of our favorite parks.  And contrary to its reputation for being overrun with squirrels, I think I only saw 2 that day.  It was fun to get out and do something social.

One thing I found out was that my children suffer from a disorder from being homeschooled.  They have "Homeschool Hands".  What's that you wonder.  Well after only a couple of times across the monkey bars for Richie, and once across for Kalene, they both came over to show me their nasty blisters.  Ouch!  See, when we were young we played on the monkeybars daily at school.  So our hands were calloused and tough.  My poor little homeschooled childrens hands have not had the opportunity to become calloused and therefore they now have "homeschool hands"  If it doesn't gross you out too much I've even supplied pictures for medical evidence records.  I'm sure this is something other homeschoolers may have and not even be aware of.  Well I am getting the word out that this does indeed exist.

Here are Kalene's hand after once across.

Feel free to comment if your child has ever suffered from this painful disorder?

I had those hands! I was in gymnastics and the bars are terrible! Even after my hands were calloused, the callouses would rip. OUCH!! Back then there was a product called "New Skin". I never used it but I heard it worked well. Basically, you paint over the raw places with the medication and it seals the wound. You may want to try it if they are still painful.

Ah, the home school hands. We have experienced that, too. I've had to schedule park times in order to gently ease the disorder. ;') Thankfully, the school playgrounds and the park down the street offer some PT during the summer. *giggle*

Have a fabulous week!

Yummm. Ice cream! What a novel idea! I'm thinking they had to work fast to keep it all from melting while "decorating" it. homeschool hands. too funny. My kids have discovered that the heavier you are, the harder it is to do monkey bars....!
They've always given up before the blister stage, so I think yours are really badges of honor for persistence and perseverance!
