2009/2010 Plan

Posted in Home School Thoughts

These are my plans so far for the up and coming school year.

Kalene

Lifepac Grade 11 Chemistry
Money Matters for Teens Ages 15-18
Why by Lee Strobel
Thinking Like A Christian by David Noebel
Lifepac American Literature
Lifepac Grade 11 History
Math - Undecided

Also she'll be taking 2 classes at the community college each trimester for a total of about 24 credits, so I am not looking for a lot of "extras" for her this year.

Richie

Writing Strands Level 3
Test Prep Grade 6
Prima Latina
Speedy Spanish
Megawords Book 3
The Story of the World Book 3 Early Modern Times
Around the World in 180 Days
Lifepac Language Arts
How to Study Your Bible For Kids by Kay Arthur
Physics Lab in a Housewares Store
Physics Lab in the Home
Science Lab in a Supermarket

I'll put together a more formal plan as the new year gets closer.

My Highschool Student is Also a College Student

Posted in Home School Thoughts

My baby is growing up.

Yesterday Kalene and I went down to the local community college and registered her for her ver first college classes.  I am not sure who was more nervous me or her.  She did a great job talking with the counselor and letting her know what it is that she is trying to do.  Her plan right now is to earn her associates degree by the time she graduates from highschool.

I think it is a great idea.  And after speaking with a couple of other homeschool moms who've done this I am excited by the idea of it all.

We are not considered dual enrollment.  This means that she will still need to take all of her highschool classes at home.  But she can also get a jump start on her college career at the same time.

For her first two classes she chose a state history class and an English class.

I'll update how things go as we progress through the year.

Avoiding the Curriculum Trap

Posted in Home School Thoughts

After a little praying and searching for next years curriculum.  I think I've got it!

This is always a great feeling.  I'll be heading to the homeschool used book sale in a few days, so I wanted to know what I should be looking for.  I didn't want to get caught up in the curriculum trap.  You know the one.  You see the newest and greatest thing and have to have it.  Only to find out that you already have something for that area, or that it just is not going to work for your child for whatever reason.

In order to avoid this, I like to do my research before I get there and see all the different vendors with their shiny new books and manipulatives.  Oh no, they will not find me wandering around the curriculum fair with that glazed over look like a kid gets the first time they've entered a candy store.  Not this year!

Homeschool Writing Contest

Posted in Home School Thoughts

I don't know about you, but I am always looking for neat ways to get my kids excited about writing.

While I used to love writing when I was growing up, I have to admit that this is not true for either of my children.  Kalene is a talented writer when she's feeling up to it.  Richie has absolutely no interest in writing anything!

The Schoolhouse Store is hosting a writing contest for homeschoolers.  I'm thinking that maybe a contest is just the motivation I need.  You can read all about the contest here.

The Five Biggest Mistakes

Posted in Home School Thoughts

If you are a homeschooling mom like I am then I'm sure that one of the things that you're concerned about is how you are going to homeschool your highschooler.
Maybe you are already doing high school like I am. My daughter is in the tenth grade. Or maybe your looking ahead and you see that high school isn't all that far off. My son is in sixth grade and this is the perfect time for me to start thinking about the goals we would like to set for his high school season. Or possibly your children are still young and enjoying days filled with play dough, read alouds, and sing alongs.
High school seems like an eternity away and so you'll barely give it a thought for a few more years.
No matter where you fall in the homeschool categories above there is a very valuable resource available for free to help you avoid some of the biggest mistakes parents can make when homeschooling a highschooler.
Lee from the Homeschool Scholar is offering a 5 part mini course called The Five Biggest Mistakes Parents Make When Homeschooling High School.
When Kalene was in seventh grade I had been homeschooling for only a couple of years and I began to panic a little. How in the world was I going to do highschool. Elementary didn't seem like such a big deal for me. But high school was serious stuff.
I hadn't felt this way since I was teaching Richie to read.
But the Lord has shown me once again that I may not be able on my own. But He has called me to walk this path and he will give me the grace to do so.

Just A Bit Of Structure

Posted in Home School Thoughts

Well it would seem that my plan to be a very unscheduled homeschooler has failed.

It all started with Richie.  He came to me the first week of school and asked for a schedule.  Nothing complex, just something to show hime hat to do each day.

Of course I complied even though I was a little stunned.

Then yesterday Kalene asks me if I'll schedule her schoolwork each week for her.  Thi way she knows what is expected of her each week.

So once again I complied.

I am here to say welcome to our much more structured homeschool!

School Is In Session

Posted in Home School Thoughts

Well school is officially back in session.

Although we will all miss our lazy days of summer, I think everyone is ready for some sort of routine again. My days are filling fast and so a routine is going to be somewhat necessary if I am going to keep my sanity.

Here is what we have chosen to use for this year so far.  I say "so far" because I tend to change things throughout the year.

~ Kalene ~

Bible  - Enjoying Your Journey With God.  She'll also read War of the Worldviews, Fearfully and Wonderfully Made, and In His Steps.

Math - Finish Teaching Textbooks Algebra and move on to either Algebra 2 or Geometry.  (Not sure which order we want to do yet.)

Science - Kalene had requested Lifepacs for science this year.  We haven't actually done any high school science yet.  (Although she did score post high school on her Standardized testing)

History - Again she has requested Lifepacs for this.  Also working together through Around the World in 180 Days over the next 2 years.

Vocabulary - Wordly Wise.  She is doing the 12th grade book and having no problems with t at all.  I picked this up for super cheap at a used sale and had no idea it was for 12th grade.  But she seems to be doing fine with it.

Language Arts - Maybe you could guess that she has Lifepacs for this as well.  She isn't too sure that she likes these ones though.

These are the Literature selections chosen for this year so far -

The Hiding Place
David Copperfield
The Scarlet Letter
The Catcher in the Rye
Moby Dick
Nineteen Eighty Four

Of course she'll ad about 100 more to that as the year progresses.

~ Richie ~

Math - Finish up Math Mammoth books.  I haven't totally decided where to go from here.  Possibly Teaching Textbooks.

Science - Discover Science.  Also It Couldn't Just Happen and Christian Liberty Nature Reader #5

History - We are finishing up Story of the World Book 2 right now and then we'll move on to book 3.  We are also going to work through Around the World in 180 Days over the next 2 years.

Spelling - Megawords.  This is a new program for us, so not too much to say about it yet.

Language Arts - I picked up a set of Lifepacs for him from a used booksale for $5.  So we'll try it and see how it goes.  So far, after one day, he likes it.

Writing - He wants to finish the last Italics book.

Bible - Keys for Kids and his Patch book from Wednesday night church.

Phonics - Explode the Code.  He really is beyond this series already.  But he asked to do it.  I think it helps him with his confidence or something.

Extras :

How to Use A Thesarus
Test Prep Workbook
Typing (Computer)
Geography (Computer)

Literature Selections so far:

The Incrdible ourney
Lad: A Dog
The Borrowers
A Wrinkle in Time

Add in there a ton of field trips.  And piano, basketball, art, volleyball, soccer, and who knows what else.  It ought to be an exciting year though.
