HOTM Father's Day Edition

Posted in Home School Thoughts

This weeks Heart of the Matter meme is a father's edition in honor of Father's Day.  I think that the father's in our lives could you a little extra recognition for all of the things that they do that go unnoticed.  This father is such a hard worker to give his family the very best life that he can.  Sometimes working almost 20 hours a day without complaining.  But just as he is a hard worker, he's also a hard player.

Here is a picture of Rich with the kids doing his favorite thing last Father's Day.

This picture says it all.  My husband is one big kid himself most of the time.  He doesn't take life so seriously, unless he has to.  He looks for those opportunities to just have fun and show us that it isn't all about hard work.  He is the perfect dad for my kids and we love him.  He may not look or act like other dads, but he perfect for us.  Thank you Rich for being the greatest dad for our family.  We are so blessed to have you in our lives.  Maybe this year you'll catch more fish than last year.

Testing

Posted in Home School Thoughts

Well Kalene had testing yesterday and Monday.  I am nowhere as panicked about the whole thing as I was last year.  It was actually very cool this year.  Kalene was a little nervous the first day, but I think it was just normal something new, will I know anyone kind of nervousness.  She of course made friends right away with a couple of girls and a boy all of whom she said are really quite normal.  On the second day she was actually looking forward to going.

I'm sure that she did great.  We aren't required in our state to have testing done which is really nice.  But Rich and I decided to start with Kalene when she finished 8th grade just to give us an idea of what we needed to focus on the next year.  Last year her test came back great.  Except she did poorly on the Algebra part of math and her grammer was at the 6th grade level.  Sounds bad but really it isn't because we stopped learning grammer in 6th grade and she hadn't even touched algebra yet.  So with that in mind I believe she did awesome.  I can't wait to see how things have changed this year from last year.

History Comes Alive

Posted in Home School Thoughts

I absolutely love all kinds of costumes.  I think that a Halloween Costume can go a long way.  It is the neatest thing when a child is playing dress up with costumes.  When you put on a costume you are instantly transported to wherever your imagination takes you.  You can be a gladiator in Rome on minute and King Arthur the next.  Costumes are a wonderful addition to any homeschool.  I think there is no better way to learn history that pretending to be in the time period that you are studying.  So if you are looking for something to spice up your daily history lesson why not read the lesson to them while they are in their costumes?  Just an idea.

Highschool Thoughts

Posted in Home School Thoughts

There are a few things that I really liked when I was in school.  With Kalene in highschool now, I can't help but think about the little things I had when I was in school.  Although  know these things might seem silly or petty.  But I still would like for Kalene (and Richie later) to have their own class rings, yearbooks, and class t-shirts.  We've been looking at class rings already.  And I have been thinking about getting some custom t-shirts made up with things that are important to her and her homeschooling experience.  I thought it might be a neat activity for her to design her own shirt to express herself.  We had these in highschool.  Each class would come up with their own design to represent themselves and distinguish us from the other classes.  I know maybe it's silly, but why not?  Next on the list..... yearbooks?  Has anyone ever come up with a special idea for a yearbook?  I was thinking of a scrapbook over the course of the four years of highschool.

Just thinking......

How Do You Schedule?

Posted in Home School Thoughts

This weeksHeart of the Matter topic is "How do you schedule?"

I have really come a long way from how I began as far as scheduling goes.  When I first started to homeschool we sat at the kitchen table every morning spending 15-30 minute increments on each subject.  I was extremely scheduled.  I would read about other homeschoolers who just kind of let school happen and it would totally freak me out.

This is funny to me now because this is how we do things around here.  I don't schedule anything for school except a couple of extracurricular things such as art, field trips, and sports.  School just gets filled in around our lives.  One of the things I like best about homeschooling is being able to get distracted by life.  And we can't overlook the fact that our kids are learning all the time.

It's true that Kalene and Richie are pretty good at being diligent about getting their schoolwork done.  They are much better at staying focused on school than I am these days.  So when they get up each day, if we don't already have something not realted to school to do, they just go ahead and start with their work.  They each know what they need to do.  So they do it.

I should add that while this is the norm at our house, I do have a lot of abdormal days as well.  Days when Kalene just can't do anything but finish the book she is reading.  Or days when Richie is way more interested in building the next gasoline free vehicle than doing science or math.  Andbecause we school all the time it isn't a big deal if they spend their day doing school in non-traditional ways.

I love this saying I read one time (sorry I don't know the author)

Distractions are just opportunities in disguise.

Science Tools

Posted in Home School Thoughts

Kalene began working through biology a couple of months ago.  We spent almost 2 years working through Apologia's Exploring Creation with General Science.  I am not sure why it took so long, but I wasn't to concerned about how long it took.  So back to biology.  She finally started and now I am wondering what kind of a microscope she will need.  I have to admit that I am not all that educated in the area of Microscopes

So please help me figure out what is the right kind to get.  And I am looking for something that will be the only thing we will need.  I am also always looking for the most frugal way.  So have you found a reliable, versitile microscope for cheap?  Also has anyone used the Lifepacs Science Grade 10 experiments DVD?  Is it worth getting?

Most Exciting Homeschool Moment

Posted in Home School Thoughts

This weeks Heart of the Matter topic is "Your Most Exciting Homeschool Moment.

I was sitting here this week trying to remember my most exciting moment.  I couldn't come up with some outstanding moment in our homeschool.

There have been so many exciting moments.  This homeschooling thing has been quite the adventure for us.

The most exciting moments could easily be some of our field trips or vacations.  Our State Capitol tour was the best!  And we love to explore while we are on vacation.  We'll just stop somewhere and check out everything.  Those are pretty exciting times.

Another thing that comes to mind when I'm thinking of our most exciting times are some of the projects we have done.  There's nothing more exciting than making real chicken mummies!  That was by far the most exciting project we've ever done.

But for me, as exciting as these times may have been, they are not my most exciting times.

It's really what seems to be the little things that are the most exciting to me.

It's when one of my kids finally "get's it."  You know what I am talking about don't you.  You can see it in their eyes that they've truely figured it out.  Especially when it is something that you've been working together on for so long.  And then one day it all just clicks.  These are exciting times to me.

Or when you daughter who HATES being homeschooled and has made it perfectly clear to you.  Suddenly says to you.  Mom, I'm glad that I am homeschooled.  WHAAAT?  Did I hear that correctly?  You see this is my daughter who asked to be homeschooled in 4th grade and decided around the age of 13 that she wanted to go to highschool.  I knew it was due to things like peer pressure from her non-homeschooled friends and family.  Then the other day she says she's glad that she is homeschooled because of the opportunities it has afforded her.  Now that's what I call an exciting homeschool moment.

Oh and that reminded me of something else.  When we first began homeschooling, my mother in law was totally against it.  We dealt with knowing how she felt for a couple of years.  Then while she was here for a surprise visit last year, the kids were showing off to her their piano music, artwork, and other stuff.  When she was leaving she said to me "You know its a good thing that you've homeschooled them or else they wouldn't be free to be who they are"  That was a pretty big exciting homeschool day for me!

WOW!

I guess once I started writing I was able to come up with a few things  that I consider exciting moments in our Homeschools.  And its good to take a moment to remember these things.  The most exciting moments in our homeschool have also been some of my greatest victories!
