Office Makeover

Posted in Keeping the Home

I am planning to overhaul our home office area.  It has become an overwhelming mess that would make most people wince when they saw it.  Saying that it is a mess is a serious understatement.  It is nothing short of a disaster.  I am usually able to find whatever I need to find.  But no one else would know where to find anything.  I am going to attempt to get that area of my life organized.  Since I can't exactly run out to Ashley Furniture to buy a new desk, I'll need to reorganize using the desk I own. Did I write "reorganize"? That seems to imply that I was ever organized in the first place =) I'll post before and after photos when I've finished. This should be quite the adventure for me.

Summer Yard Plans

Posted in Keeping the Home

We are already beginning our plans for summer.

We already had our tree cut down, and have been using the wood chips around the yard.  We are planning to put up our 4 foot pool this summer.  But we have a lot of neighbors around us, and with the tree gone we have even less privacy in our back yard.

So I am hoping to put up a wooden privacy fence.  I don't want to go around the entire yard, just where we will be placing the pool.  I've often thought that after a few years the wooden fencing looks horrible.  But if you use a product like Ronseal Fence Sprayer they end up looking just like new again. So that is what helped in the decision to put one up.

I've Remodeled My Office Area

Posted in Keeping the Home

I haven't really remodeled it, but it sure does feel like I have.

I have been spending almost the entire day cleaning my office area in my house.

It was an absolute disaster area.  I do not know how it gets so bad so quickly.  The other thing I do not know is how in the world we have been getting through school lately with how disorganized this area has been.

But I am glad to be getting it all done.  It is looking so much better.  I had thought about taking before and after pictures.  But I am not ready for anyone to know how bad it really was :-)

I also found that I have a ton of homeschooling stuff that I do not need anymore.  I have been thinking about opening an Amazon store.  I do not have any idea how much work is involved in that, but I am going to look into it this week.

Now that it is finally looking much more organized I can not help but start to look at the rest of the room.

My desk is pretty old and not all that functional really.  I would love to replace it with new home office furniture from Max Furniture

But if I were to do that then I would start to look at the rest of the funiture in the room.  My office area is in my family room.  And I really can't afford to replace my living room furniture too.

Lord please teach me to have a content heart.

Plans

Posted in Keeping the Home

We have been using this week to try and get our house in order and clean out all of our closets.  Unfortunately I haven't gotten as far as I would like to be by this time.  But I will not give up.  I will press on until it is all done. We were able to get rid of a lot of junk today to the garbage men.  So I am happy about that.

I'm not sure what it is, I just feel this need to get things organized.  I guess I know that once we start school again full time things will be a bit crazy around her.  Kalene should be starting soccer here in a couple of weeks.  And then we will be starting up with art and piano lessons.  Kalene will also be doing volleyball.  Richie does basketball and we are thinking about getting him involved in a martial arts clas, we just aren't which one yet.  And this doesn't include field trips or spontaneous stuff.

I'm not overwhelmed by it, in fact I am excied by it.  But I also know that having some kind of organization will go a long way to maintaining the sanity around here.

Next week I'll begin planning and getting ready for school.  I'll also spend some time organizing all of our household and business records.

Moving Right Along

Posted in Keeping the Home

Well our bathroom is just about done.  It took a bit longer than we expected.  We ran into a few snags.  But all is well now and the bathroom floor looks great.  I'll try to post some pictures as soon as I can.

Now with the bathroom done we are starting to look at other rooms in the house.  And although it isn't technically a room, we are considering replacing the wallpaper in there with some Graham and Brown drama wallpaper.  It is a small area and we like the way it look wallpapered.  We are looking for something bright and cheery. The hallway is small and kind of dark, so this would definately brighten things up a bit.

Isn't it funny how once you start one project you end up looking at everything else that needs to be done.

The Blinds Saga Goes On...

Posted in Keeping the Home

You know I wrote about how dirty my blinds were last week.  Do you think I pulled them all down and cleaned them?  Of course not.  So there they sit as grimy as ever.

I am being a bad procrastinator this week with my housework.  But there is just so much other stuff that I would rather be doing.  I really think I should just pull them down and replace them.  That way I will not have to take them outside to wash them.

This is the most effective method that I have come up with to date for cleaning my blinds.  I hang them all the way open on the fence and spray them down with the hose.  Of course I would never do this if I had nice blinds like the ones they have at Select Blinds.  But since I have the cheapest plastic blinds they carry in the store this method works out great for me.

What is they best method you've found for cleaning the dust and grime off of your blinds?

Changed Plans

Posted in Keeping the Home

Last night I excitedly announced to my husband that I had absolutely nothing "extra" going on today.  Nothing extra, meaning no babysitting, no piano lessons, no soccer practice or games, no meetings at church, no grocery shopping.  None of my regular weekly appointments which keep me sooo busy.  This meant that I could wake up early and catch up on everything that I have had to put off just to keep the regular house stuff moving along such as laundry and dinner, and maybe dishes.

I had such high aspirations.  First I would wake up and catch up on all the email overflowing in my inbox.  Then I could go through my Truthquest Ancient Rome Guide And place the books we'll need for the next couple of weeks on hold through interlibrary loan.  I would figure out what the kids did for school last week while I was sooo busy.  (there are things they can do without any real help from mom)  I would get caught up on the laundry since I only did what needed to be done (no sheets or blankets)  I would spend some time catching up on the books for my husbands constuction company.  I would make the most fabulous breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  And we would work on the history, math, and science that I was unavailable to help with last week.  And to top off the day we would enjoy this delicious sounding strawberry shortcake that I will have made from scratch.

Now back to reality and what really has happened today.  I did indeed get up before anyone else.  However it was already 9:00!  I made coffee and enjoyed some quiet computer time alone while everyone else slept.  I went through some of my email.  I did go through my Truthquest Guide and place the books we'll need on hold.  That is where all my plans changed.

My husband woke up at 10:00 and so did Richie.  Kalene pretended to sleep until she smelled breakfast.  I made breakfast burritos, a favorite around here.  It is super easy, cook up some sausage and add eggs, onion, and green peppers.  Put it in a tortilla with some shredded cheese and you have breakfast.  After breakfast we all watched the movie Night at the Museum.  Then it was time for Rich to go and earn some money.  I sent both of the kids to their rooms for a much needed cleaning.  I put some grass seed down in the front yard.  Threw in a load of laundry.  Now I am taking some time to write this blog.

As I am writing this I realize a few things.  1.  I am actually getting to the stuff on my mental list of things to do.  Its a good thing I didn't write them down or I would be frantically trying to cross off each one.  Instead I am calmly tackling each thing anyway.  2.  It may not be going the way I thought it would but we got to spend some much needed time unwinding today.  Just hanging out together in our P.J's until 2:00 can be very therapeutic, I highly recommend it.  I wouldn't do it too often though or you risk falling into laziness.  3.  I still have every intention of making that delicious looking strawberry shortcake today.  I have spent every spare second reading over this blog.  While there, I have had to wipe the drool off of my keyboard from looking at this picture.

I am thankful that God doesn't allow all of MY carefully thought out plans to succeed the way I think they should.  He knows just how to keep me in check.  Otherwise I might actually begin to think that I know what is best for me.

Work, work, work

Posted in Keeping the Home

So since we decided it is time for us to move, we realized that first we must sell this house.  It was a little dicouraging at first because we found out that the houses in our area that are for sale are NOT selling.  Then there are all the things we need to do before we even list the house if we expect anyone to choose ours from the ton of houses in our selling price range.

We did start looking a little for houses, just to get an idea of what is out there in our price range.  We have found a house that we really like.  We had been stalking the house for a few weeks and it didn't look like anyone had been there at all.  Then the other night we saw a couple of people checking out "our" house.  Okay so it isn't "OUR HOUSE".  And I really do know that God already has our house set aside for us (and maybe this one is it... I don't know.)  Anyway I bring all of this up to say that my husband came home that night and set to work.  We have almost everything done besides painting, which will only take about 2 days (Rich used to be a journeyman painter so he knows how to paint real good and fast) We are going to finish tiling(sp?) the tub  tomarrow.  And then its on to paint.  We also have to replace the roof once we can count on the weather to behave for a few days.  I am hoping to have a sign up in the yard by the middle of April.  Soo we will continue to work until it is.

This is what I've been up to lately
