May 9th Stamp Out Hunger!

The statistics are shocking and continue to grow everyday.

There is an easy way that you can help. Just set out some canned or boxed food on May 9th and you letter carrier will pick it up and deliver it to a food distribution center that will in turn get it to the people who need it most. Don't worry about putting out too much food, the carriers don't mind and neither do the distribution centers =)

The need is especially great right now, so instead of naturally gripping tightly to what you have, remember you have it so you can share. We all have something to share. It is also a wonderful way to show your kids that you care about others. I love taking every opportunity to show my kids that we are here to care about people and the Letter Carriers Food Drive is the perfect chance to do this.

The statistic that has recently been haunting me is that the average age of a homeless person is 7 years old! This is for real!

40 Bible Study Methods

Now that my kids are getting older it is very important to me that they learn to study the bible for themselves.  Although I love being able to teach them things from the bible.  The real value is that one day they will be able to teach themselves.

So while looking for curriculum for the upcoming school year, I am also looking at different study tools available to teach how to study the bible.

Pastor Andy Deane has put together the ultimate tool for learning to study your bible called Learn to Study the Bible (40 Bible Study Methods)

I'm not sure if my son is ready for this, but I am curious about it for myself.

Outside Help

I found some areas of homeschooling just a bit more challenging this year than in the past.

Maybe it is because we are getting into higher levels of learning.  But whatever it is it can definitely be a frustrating situation for all involved.  The subject that was giving us the more headaches this year was math.  Algebra to be specific.  I was trying all kinds of things to get us to the point that we could move on.  But it didn't matter what I did nothing was working.

Finally I considered a Math Tutor. Just because we are homeschoolers does not mean that there will never be times when we just need some outside help. It took a lot for me to admit that this was one time that I needed help. But I am so glad I did. We are no longer stuck and it feels great.

Get Out Of The House

I have noticed that it is getting more and more difficult to keep our focus on finishing up school for the year. It is not even the kids that I'm talking about, but me. So I have come up with a list of ideas to keep us focused so that we can finish the year off right.

1. Take school outside.

Maybe have a reading time outside. Send each kid with their own blanket to find a nice quiet place to read outside in the fresh air.

2. Make gardening a Science.

This is a great time to teach about botany, weather, insects, ect. Besides it is a great thing when you can tell your kids to play in the dirt.

3. Get out of the house.

This time of the year is perfect for field trips. If you have been cooped up all winter it is exactly what you need.

Basically if you are feeling a case of spring fever why not just go with it? Sometimes its easier not to fight things, and this is one of those times. Besides lots of time outdoors is just what kids need. Spending time in creation is a great way to get to know The Creator.

Fishing as a Family Tradition

My husband is so excited that it is finally fishing time.  Today he took out his boat with his uncle and went fishing.  I wish that he had one of those nifty nautical clocks like they sell at American Marine Supply so he could tell just how long he has been out on the water. When he gets out there he totally loses track of time.  I am thankful that he has been given the opportunity to spend some precious time with his uncle.  He is getting to know his uncle better, and I think that is important for men to bond.  I have noticed that fishing is like this secret male bonding time that males of all ages love and can appreciate as well.  I do not know what it is about fishing.  But I am telling you that it works every time.  My husband comes from a long line of self proclaimed professional fisherman.  His father was an avid fisher and passed his love of fishing on to my husband.  Now my husband is sharing his love of fishing with our son. It gives him a great opportunity to spend time with our son and have great conversations.   So, is fishing a large part of your family?  Do you have any memories of days spent fishing?

Free Bible Study Curriculum

I have been looking for a resource to help aid in bible study time for my highschooler.  Even though there are a lot of great bible study resources out there, I was hoping to find something very low cost.  So imagine my happiness when I found out about this free site.  They have over fifteen different printable bible study workbooks.  And they seem really promising!

Remote Access

Once again I am going to write a post about something I do not know anything about.  However is my never ending search for more and more information about computers and websites, I have come upon another neat new thing to learn.  This time the topic is remote access.

I know that there are reasons for someone to use something like this.  There are a couple of companies that offer this service to their customers.  While the more popular companies are still charging around twenty bucks a month for this service, You can still find it for under $5 a month.
