Helpful, Frugal....Smart Ideas!

Posted in Frugal Finds

We moved about 5 months ago and in the process I was able to get more organized. I love to be organized! It gives me peace. I came across a thin tablet that had some messy notes jotted inside. The tips were good ones but when I thought of where to store these, I couldn't figure that out. They would sit in my filing system so I thought I'd put them on here. Maybe others might use one or two of them then too.

At the top of the page it said Ideas from Cheapskate Newletter. Thinking back, I am thinking these were printed newsletters that a friend of mine lent to me.She is a HUGE bargain finder. I love a good bargain but she devotes MUCH time to this in order to make enough money for Christian School tuition. I prefer to spend my time teaching my own children and save that tuition money. We help each other out though where we can. (That's what friends are for!) Anyway, here are some of the ideas I got from her newsletters! Now I can look back on them myself and hopefully share them with YOU, too!

To save ice cream from getting freezer frost, push a piece of plastic wrap down on the surface of the ice cream.(no pockets of air). Then put lid on. This keeps it fresh to the last bite. (...and who would ever want to waste ice cream!)

To deoderize shoes, place a dryer sheet inside overnight.

You can also use a used dryer sheet to dust a TV or computer screen. It eliminates static and prevents dust from resettling again! (Not to mention it saves on paper towels!)

Once a cucumber is cut, wrap it in a paper towel to keep it fresh longer.

There are over 250 children's museums in the U.S. Most offer free admission on a certain day of the week or month. Call the American Association of Youth Museums for information at 202-466-4144.

For cut flower arrangements: Add 1 tsp. sugar and 1/4 cup bleach. This will keep your flower fresh longer! Recut stems on an angle after a few days for even longer beauty!

To clean cement: Use Ajax or Comet cleaner! Sprinkle on cement. Add some water and scrubb with stiff broom!

To Remove rust stains from washable fabrics: Shake table salt on stain. Then wet with lemon juice. Allow to set overnight and wash normally.

Instead of buying a "banana tree", try this.  Use a large screw-in type hook. Screw it into the underside of your cupboards. (saves counterspace too!)

Small holes in pantyhose? Spray with some hairspray! This keeps it from getting bigger or "running". I heard people use glue sticks, too!

To remove a broken lightbulb, cut a potatoe in half. Push into broken glass and twist. Lightbulb comes out safely!

Have small holes in your walls (want to cover nail holes?) Wet fingertip and dip in baking soda. Dab this over the hole.

Put a wooden spoon across to top of a boiing pot. The pot will not boil over. (I just used this tip last night.)

Make your own baby wipes:Cut paper towels in half. Make the following mixture: 2 cups hot water, 2 Tablespoons baby oil, 1 Tablespoon baby shampoo. Pour over towels! Store in recycled container or a ziplock bag.

To store foods in the freezer in ziplocks: Place the tip of a straw in the opening and zip closed up to the straw. Inhale through the straw as zipping close. Remove straw and finfish closing. Bag will shrink around the food and the food will stay fresh longer.

A cheap way to remind your hubby and kids that you love them! Add a note to a mirror that they use in the morning! Use dry erase markers!

Enjoy! If you have a good tip like those above, leave it in a comment for me! I'd love to hear it!

Sep. 24, 2007 - Great Post!

I found you over at Chelelew. I love the frugal ideas! I just posted yesterday on my blog about the incredible cost of milk! I am looking for some great ways to cut back on the use of milk. I also have 5 children around your ages. Have you got any?
