I mentioned recently that we had a home school group at our church. In 2003, I went to some of other ladies within our church to see if they would want to do a home school group together for some group activities with our children. We started in February of 2003. I only had three children at the time. They were the ages 7,5 and 3.
I got permission to use our church building for the group. We meet just once a month usually on the 4th Thursday from 10am to 3pm. I don’t Run it, I just organize it!! Each mom lets me know what they would like to teach and I just get it all into a schedule. We each bring one part of the lunch each time and we all have the same menu! For the most part are classes include children ages 3-14. We have one class that we started last year where we split the children into two different age groups. One mom teaches the older group Art Appreciation. They learn a new artist each month and do a piece of art in that style. During that same time I teach the children ages 2-7 a class called LAMBS (Learning And Memorizing with Bible Stories). The other classes this year are: English From the Roots up (learning different roots to words), Nutrition & Meal Planning (in a few months this class will actually start planning and preparing our lunch meal during co-op!) We have one of the older boys (a 16 yr. old brother in one family) does phys.ed for the group. Galloping the Globe concentrates on one country each month with maps, interesting facts and even foods to taste. We also have a class called The Human body. Each month the children get a Creative Writing assignment to do for the next month. I have them put them in a folder full of sheet protectors. The papers slip in the sleeves and I stick a sticker on the outside of the protector. They also get a prize from the prize bin. We will occasionally do field trips together too and we will do holiday or seasonal crafts and do show & tell, etc. Everyone pitches in where necessary with classroom help, childcare, lunch prep, clean-up, etc. It has been a highlight to our month each time!
Classes we had in the past: Sign Language, Important People from History, Caldecott Winning Books, Character Traits, Hymn Writers, Godly Composers, Beginning Art.
One year, we had a Career Night: We arranged for different people from our church to come and speak about their career. We also had munchies. We had a great turn-out.
Every year we have a Christmas Around the World Fair. Each family picks a country and works on things for a table presentation, a speaking presentation and also a food or foods from that country. It is a wonderful night! Also during the Christmas season, we draw names amongst the children and they buy and wrap a BOOK for a gift exchange!
We may do a play this Spring. The kids REALLY want to!
