Preschool Lapbook: Flowers & Plants
May. 27, 2008 • 10:20 AM
May's theme for our preschool lapbook through Little laplinks is... FLOWERS!
Updated* Here is our FINISHED Lapbook! (Read below for most of the links to make one!)
At first I didn't think my son would do this one. My girls thought it was "girly". I guess since their bedrooms are full of flower prints, etc. I ask my son and told him that God made all the flowers so He must really love flowers and also mommy likes them a lot, too. He told me he wanted to make one so I started searching. I hope we do an animal one next though! He'd love the ocean creatures one! If you want to try lapbooks or want an easy way to pull one together with your preschooler(s), check out Little Laplinks (at Lapbook Lessons)

Here are the links for things we plan to print and use in our lapbook:
Coloring picture: Bird on a fence with a large sunflower
Flower Sequence Cards
Colorful Flowers Book: Color a flower for each color!
Flower Pictures/Bookmarks to print (realistic photos)
We did paint dabber/Bingo stamper art in our TOT SCHOOL this past week. They have some flowers patterns! We did one and cut around it to hopefully include in his lapbook as well! Here is the link so you can pick out a flower page to print and make! You can also use circle stickers if you don't have the dabbers!
Fruit Loop flower picture!
Great set of flower sorting cards!
Alphabetical order Cards: Flower names! (a little too above my son's level but will be great for next year as we plan to use and review these lapbooks for preschool and kindergarten!)
Fabulous Flower flashcards!
About my flower: Journal Page!
Flower Cards: Match-Up Colors!, and Match-Up Shapes!
Flower Colors flip book! cut and paste then assemble into booklet!
Flower-Tulip Alphabet Tracer Cards
Flowerpot Days of the Week!
Counting Daisies: Cards and Daisy Counters! Great to laminate and put in an envelope for a counting activity!
Here are some links to things we are using from other Laplink participants!
Valerie posted this number/flower petal match-up game (preschoolprintables.com)
Also her link to this neat layered flap book of flowers!
Label the parts of a flower: We plan to make this into a match-up activity the child can do each time he uses the lapbook!
Homeschool Share has a lapbook unit on plants!! They have many great printables for our lapbook!
My son is a little too young for this right now but I might save it for him and put it in a pocket for next schoolyear! It is a cute SEED ADDITION BOOKLET (flapbook style)
Craft projects to do that can be added to your lapbook!
1. Take a walk outside and collect some flowers with your child. Bring them inside and lay between two pieces of waxed paper and place inside (the back of) a heavy book. This will press the flowers. (Or use a flower press if you have one!) Once pressed, preserve by laminating them with either a laminating machine or between clear contact paper. Add these in some way to your child's lapbook. It would be neat to use these to match up with a drawing of that flower or the name of it/ info. cards for a great true-to-life matching game. When your child plays it, they won't only be learning names of the flowers but I'm sure remembering the fun tiime he/she had picking those flowers with mom!
2. Flower creation made up of your Family Hands! See this done Here!
Here is the link to the stem and leaf patterns for this craft!
Here are some other things we are using:

What Plants Need and the Parts of a Plant activities from the book: File Folder Games (Science) published by Carson-Dellosa. (sorry! I couldn't find it on Amazon-books)
We always try to find things we have "stashed" in our homeschool things. We found a Scholastic hand-out called "Schoalstic News" that you cut and make into a book called "Amazing Plants". (I have a good friend that used to be an elementary-aged public school teacher and she would give our co-op all her extra "Scholastic News" I saved them knowing they'd be just right for unit studies or lapbooks!
Also- check out your local dollar store for things to go with your themes! We got some neat flower cut-outs!
And... Here are two cute songs/poem you can do with your preschooler(s). You could type them into a document and print them to keep in the lapbook as well!
Poem:
Little Brown Seeds
Little brown seeds so small and round,
Are sleeping quietly underground.
Down comes the raindrops,
Sprinkle, sprinkle, sprinkle.
Out comes the rainbow,
Twinkle, twinkle, twinkle.
Little brown seeds way down below,
Up through the earth they grow, grow, grow.
Little green leaves come out one by one.
They hold up their heads and look at the sun.
(Author unknown)
Song:
Little Seed
("I'm A Little Teapot" tune)
I'm a little seed
In the dark, dark ground.
Out comes the warm sun,
Yellow and round.
Down comes the rain,
Wet and slow.
Up comes the little seed,
Grow, grow, grow!

I am a LittleBlots member too. seems like I saw your name there a couple months ago.
I have enough wonderful materials that I never get around to using (sad sad sad) so I am not entering the contest. I hope/pray the right mama gets it and will be tremendously blessed by the set.
