Review: Salem Ridge Press
Dec. 10, 2008 • 3:23 PM

Salem Ridge Press is a publishing company that has been working on bringing back children's books that were originally published in the 1800's and early 1900's. Daniel Mills started this publishing company in November of 2005.

Daniel Mills is a homeschooling graduate who loves the Lord and desires to serve Him and other people, especially other homeschooling families, through his business.
Salem Ridge Press strives to republish books that are well-written, interesting and wholesome. WOW! This is what we need. There are so many children’s books out there that truly are a waste of time. These books hold high standards of good values and virtues, have good story lines and most of the time teach us things especially from history without the need to be vulgar, corrupt, scandalous, or magical and mystical. And…These books still really keep one’s interest! I applaud this company! Daniel says” If I am going to bring a book back into print, I want to be able to stand behind it with no reservations!” As a homeschooling mom that loves a GOOD book, I thank you and I recommend your company with no reservations.
The underlying philosophy of Salem Ridge Press is found in the Bible: "Whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things (Philippians 4:8)." Daniel firmly believes that what we read matters and what we take into our minds is a major factor in forming our ideas and character.
The Salem Ridge Press' website is very well set-up. You can search through books by child’s age, historical time period, or author's name. Here are three of their selection that I had the priviledge to review to become more familiar with the books printed and sold at Salem Ridge Press...
Mary Jane, Her book

Mary Jane, Her Book was written by Clara Ingram Judson and originally published in 1918. This story of 183 pages is the first book in the Mary Jane series. It recounts the happy, wholesome adventures of five-year-old Mary Jane and her family as she helps her mother around the house, spends time playing with her beloved doll, goes on a picnic with the big girls, plants a garden with her father, learns to sew and more! It is a very sweet story written in a way that keeps your interest. This was a read aloud for us and we all enjoyed it very much.

Glaucia the Greek Slave is a story of a girl and her brother, both sold into slavery to pay off their father's debts. The story took place in the 1st Century so these children lived during the lifetime of Christ. The book was very interesting and factual yet thrilling to read. This story was written by Emma Leslie and originally published in 1874. This is the first book in her Church History Series. It would be a very good book to read when studying slavery and/or freedom. Emma’s series appeals to both boys and girls of any age. Her books in this series are inspirational as in each book there are those that come to salvation in Jesus Christ, while other characters are faithful to Him during difficult or uncertain circumstances. They also tell of history times and events in a memorable way.

The White Seneca is the story of a white teenage boy who was captured by the Seneca Indians during the 1770s and became a part of their tribe. This is a historical fiction title that is set in the time of the American Revolution. We haven't had a chance to read this title yet but look forward to it after the holidays!
