Review: Beyond Five In A Row
Feb. 16, 2009 • 12:08 AM

Being a TOS Homeschool Crew member, I received another great product. This time it was part of the Five in a Row curriculum.
I know that many homeschooling families use Five In A Row (FIAR) but this is the first time I have seen one of their products.
We receive the volume Beyond Five in A Row, which is geared for ages 8-12. It was written by Becky Jane Lambert

The unit study idea with FIAR is to read through a book and dive into all it offers one chapter at a time: science, history, geography, reading, art, creative writing, life lessons and human relationships, etc. It includes most subjects and really brings the book to life while learning A LOT along the way! (Math, grammar, and spelling are subjects not included.)
Our Volume Two has you use four books (two fiction and two non-fiction). The manual includes activities for each chapter. You are to read from the book five days in a row, doing the activities for each chapter as you go.
The four books in this volume are:
The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Warner Chandler
Thomas Edison – Young Inventor by Sue Gutheridge
Homer Price by Robert McCloskey
Betsy Ross- Designer of Our Flag by Ann Weil
In doing Thomas Edison – Young Inventor (Chapter one), we learned about the Great Lakes, barges plus the Erie Canal and how it came to be. We started a map of Edison’s life to be continued as we read. We learned also about incubating eggs as well as The Scientific Method. We talked about descriptive word choices used throughout the chapter, did a creative writing piece about living on a canal and talked about and listened to the folk song “Erie Canal” and ALL that was just in the first chapter of this book!
There are so many great lessons within each chapter, there are just too many to name them all. A few things we liked learning along with the story was about pitch, parlors (rooms of the past), frostbite, one-room schoolhouses, The Underground Railroad, The great Depression and then, of course, how a light bulb works. There were many other things too that I haven’t listed here. As a mom, I really loved the side lesson on obedience within Chapter 3.

We love Five in a Row! We will probably fit Beyond Five In a Row into our class time when the kids get older. Thanks for your review.
Blessings,
