Serving Him at Home

Sunday, January 14, 2007 - Sunday Hymn

Rise Up, O Church of God

Rise Up, O Church of God!
Have done with lesser things;
Give heart and mind and soul and strength
To serve the King of kings.

Rise up, O Church of God!
His kingdom tarries long;
Bring in the day of brotherhood
And end the night of wrong.

Rise up, O sons of God!
The church for you doth wait,
Her strength unequal to her task,
Rise up, and make her great!

Lift high the cross of Christ!
Tread where His feet have trod;
As followers of the Son of Man,
Rise up, O Church of God!

Friday, January 12, 2007 - Recipe Collecting

I have collected recipes for a long time and a few weeks ago I finally organized them and started a system to use them. A while ago I went through my recipe collection and sorted them into various categories:

~Main Dishes
~Side Dishes
~Snacks, Dips, Breakfasts
~Cookies & Cakes
~Pie & Desserts
~Muffins & Cupcakes
~Bars & Brownies
~Breads, Rolls, etc.

I labeled plastic file folders and put each one into a notebook:

Here's what the cover looks like:

The problem was using them! I had everything neatly organized but I didn't really go through the notebook much to see what was there.
Two weeks ago I went through every recipe in the notebook. I threw away what I knew I wouldn't really use. Sometimes I see recipes that look good but then when I look closely I realize, for a variety of reasons, that I'll never make it.

I decided to make a list of the recipes I really wanted to try. I organized the list by week and added the headings "main and side" and wrote down each recipe that I wanted to try that week. Just one a week. Sometimes I added a side dish, sometimes not. I haven't added any desserts or breads yet because I wanted to get this system under my belt. Here's a picture of the list:

Last week I made Easy Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes--a big hit--and tomorrow night I'll be make peachy chicken.
I made the list for an entire year so I'm excited about finally using all these recipes I have!

Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - Daily Bible Reading

The elders at our church have encouraged everyone to be involved in daily Bible reading. To that end, they have made available The One Year Bible for us to order if we wish. They sent an e-mail yesterday stating that if we didn't want to purchase the book, we could view it online for free. The One Year Bible Online is a free resource for anyone to use. Each day's reading is there to view in many different translations. If you want to use your own Bible, they also provide a schedule that you can print out.

If you have younger children and you think they might not be able to do the entire reading each day (although you could read it to them), then visit here for a Children's Daily Reading Plan. It provides a year-long schedule for reading the Bible that highlights many important Biblical events and truths about God. It will also get them in the habit of reading the Word daily.

Last year I read The One Year Bible (although I just read NT, Psalms and Proverbs) in the English Standard Version. This year I'm reading it in the New Living Translation. This is the first time I've read a translation that wasn't "mainstream" and I'm enjoying it very much.

So whether you choose to read the Bible through this year or just read portions of the Word, it doesn't matter as long as you are in the Word daily. If you are not, then from where are you drawing your strength? How can you know God intimately if you aren't in His Word?

Monday, January 1, 2007 - A New Home

I love coming here to Homeschool Blogger but since the changeover I have had trouble logging in, uploading pictures, working on my template.  Everything takes too long to do.  I like to blog but I don't want to spend a lot of time doing it.  I've always kept a blog over at Blogger and I am now going to post over there.  If I can get on here and log in quicly, I will add the same post over here.

I hope you'll visit me over that at www.servingHimathome.blogspot.com.   You don't have to be a member to comment so I hope you'll continue to stop by and comment.

Sunday, December 24, 2006 - Merry Christmas

A Communion Hymn for Christmas

Gathered round Your table on this holy eve,
Viewing Bethlehem's stable we rejoice and grieve;
Joy to see You lying in Your manger bed,
Weep to see You dying in our sinful stead.

Prince of Glory, gracing Heav'n ere time began,
Now for us embracing death as Son of Man;
By Your birth so lowly, by Your love so true,
By Your cross most holy, Lord, we worship You!

Bethlehem's Incarnation, Calvary's bitter cross,
Wrought for us salvation by Your pain and loss;
Now we fall before You in this holy place,
Prostrate we adore You, for Your gift of grace.

With profoundest wonder we Your body take--
Laid in manger yonder, broken for our sake:
Hushed in adoration we approach the cup--
Bethlehem's pure oblation freely offered up.

Christmas Babe so tender, Lamb who bore our blame,
How shall sinners render praises due Your name?
Do Your own good pleasure in the lives we bring;
In Your ransomed treasure reign forever King!

Thursday, December 21, 2006 - The true meaning of Christmas

Only a few more days until we celebrate the Lord's birth.  It is hard to comprehend that God came to earth in the flesh--as a baby.   I always think of this passage during Christmas because it explains what the Lord did:

Who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.  And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross~Philippians 2:6-8

That's what Christmas is all about!!!

Monday, December 18, 2006 - Dinner for Tonight

A Quick and Easy Dinner for Tonight:

Pineapple Salsa Chicken

3-6 skinless, boneless chicken breasts
1 can tidbit pineapple (drain)
1 can black beans (undrained)
1 32-oz. jar chunky-style salsa (mild or medium)

Place chicken breasts in the crockpot and add the rest of the ingredients.  Cook on low 6-8 hours.  Serve with warm tortillas and rice.

And I'm making this for our Titus 2 group tonight.

Friday, December 15, 2006 - 5 Ways to Say "No"

5 Ways to Say 'No'

While it's OK to say 'Yes' to some requests for your time--especially those that are really important--saying 'No' is essential to securing sufficient time for yourself and your family. Here are 5 tactful ways to say 'No.'

1. 'Although I'm flattered you've asked me to make your daughter's party dress, I just don't have the time to do so with all of my other projects.'

2. 'I can't volunteer to chaperone the dance, but I'd be more than happy to bake cookies for the event.'

3. 'I don't have the time necessary to give this project my full attention, and I can't accept projects that I can only offer limited focus on.'

4. 'Thanks for asking, but my Saturdays are dedicated to my family.'

5. 'My scheduled is already booked to the max, so although I appreciate you asking, I have to decline your kind offer.'

Wednesday, December 13, 2006 - Not Much Blogging Lately

Ok, I think we're back in business!  Everything looks different.  Well, here's an update of what's going on here:

I am in the middle of Christmas preparations so really haven't have much time to blog lately.  Last night I finished the first of two (perhaps three) fleece blankets that I'm making.  There's not much to it!  I just bought the fleece panel (a cardinal one for my mom and a Cowboys one for my dad) and I'm doing a blanket stitch around the edges.  Easy as pie!

The other day we made about 6 dozen cookies but they are now gone.    So last night JK and JL made another six dozen.  Some are decorated, some are not.  We're also going to be working on a gingerbread house this week.  Last year I did one myself but this year JK is going to do it.  Yeah!  Our tree is up but not decorated.  That is on my list this week also!

The weather has been very nice lately.  I went out to lunch with friends today and I didn't even need a jacket.  I know the wintery blast will come in the near future but I'm enjoying this now.  I do hope we get some snow this winter.  And not just a little bit--I'd like to see a major snowstorm!  It's been quite a while since that has happened in Central VA.

So, if you don't see my around here as much as usual you'll know I'm busy with things around the house.  Have a blessed week!
