Kittens Kittens Oh My!

Hello Friends, Visitors and Fellow Readers,

For those who may not have visited in awhile and have missed some blogs...I am now a Foster Pet Parent for the APL (animal protective league/Shelter).

Saturday Sept. 27th Our 12yo and I went to Orientation Class and he became a Pet Partner Volunteering at the shelter on Weekend Mornings.

While I (mom) became a Foster Pet Parent and brought home 2 week old Kittens, 4 of them.

Due to having the kittens and yes, they are time consuming and hard work must feed them often, wipe them, keep them warm, clean them and socialize them as well as keeping ourselves santized and clean.

Our school work has consisted of this week Life Skills 101 with Kittens. We are learning all about kittens and getting ready to put together a lapbook on Kittens/Cats of everything we are learning hands on plus from the internet, books and APL.

Our school work has been light (although we have managed to get to our programs and library) as far as text book and workbook work goes this week due to not only the kittens and learning with them but, also due to everyone's yearly doctor appts. We have finally managed to get everyone through the pediatrician.

Now next week it will be the dentist and then next the eye doctor.

So pretty much the month of October is yearly appts as well as for mom and dad too.

With that said we have focused most of our learning towards the kittens and Kitten/Cat lapbook and Completing Our Language Arts Unit 2.

We also managed to discover 2 great websites you may or may not wish to check out.

One has some nice online books your children can read or you can read to them especially if your short on time (like we are) for your trip to the library or just busy at home..children can read hundreds of free books online at Big Universe.

Choose from picture books for preschoolers to young adults books in 12 languages and multiple subject areas.

Children can also write a book for free and have it published on the site where other kids can read it.

www.biguniverse.com

The other site is a math challenge we are taking part on the 1st of November (you can chose your own date) It's called Mathathon

What it is? It helps Students build math skills and raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

2008 Thanks and Giving Campaign

By hosting Mathathon for your homeschool or school you'll get a free math curriculum supplement for grade k-9 and instructions on how to host the event.

Students obtain sponsers, complete math problems, collect donations, and earn prizes!

To learn more visit www.mathathon.org or call 1-800-386-2665

Now I will share most of our week now with the Kittens:

Our Favorite Kitten so far is the one we call "Baby" and so far we believe is the only "she" all the kids love her.

Here's another sweet picture of "Baby"

We are all getting really attached to "Baby" especially our  12yo.

Here's why we call her "BABY."

Baby's Personality reminds us of Our Sweet Kitty Lou.

(all the kids want to keep her)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Then we believe "Baby" has three brothers well, that's what it looks like right now (were not positive) but, that's what it appears right now none of them look like what she has.

Her Brother "Bear" we call him is a unusual kitten he is sweet but not all the time and gets a temper now and then.

He is all black (no other color) He defintely reminds me of a bear.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Then there's her Brother Pumpkin.

He is pretty sweet, he cries but only when he wants something usually and he loves attention not quite like baby but, he does love to be petted or sit in your lap or cuddled.

He didn't appreciate the picture though.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Then last but, not least there's Patch (he reminds me of Patch the Pirate) his little claws are always digging into my hands during feeding time, he can be sweet one minute and then a little brat the next. LOL

I believe they will all grow up to be wonderful cats someday though, they all have different personalities that are great we just loves baby's personality for our family like she would fit in.

Here's Patch (he looks sweet here don't let him fool ya) LOL

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

We try to let them move around a little if they want to, to build their motor skills and well, be a kitten.

We call this the Kitten Circle Time:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

We don't let our other pets near the kittens to be safe for all involved but, when the kittens are tucked safely away and we are santized we allow our Lou and Desi to have sometime with us.

Lou and Desi Chillin...

Baby Once again melting my heart.....

Last Cake Class

Monday was a busy day with Ortho appt for 12yo and taking care of Kittens and some school (very little) along with other errands but, most of all a important day for Miah.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

See Miah has been taking Wilton Cake Decorating Classes since June.

What started out as something simple for his 10th Birthday Present became something very important, serious and enjoyable for Miah.

Miah has always loved to cook he has been in the kitchen since he was old enough to stand and walk on his own. [He would pull a chair by the stove, climb on it and asked to stir the pasta or fry the ground meat when he was still in a diaper].

He began Course 1 in June 2008.

We started on a rocky side of the Instructor's Mind, we let her know that Miah was serious and really enjoyed cooking and she allowed him to take part in her class.

Like I knew he would he took his class very seriously.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

He took time for his work and wanted to do his best.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

During Course 1 NO ONE could believe Miah was making the cakes except his instructor and those in class. (including mom).

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Although I didn't take pictures of days in class when it was hard there were those days and Miah would cry because it was hard or he couldn't get something right, right away.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

But, even when he would have a mess up or I would mess him up his cakes always seemed to turn out beautiful anyway.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

At the end of Course 1 Miah wasn't sure if he was going to continue into Course 2 because he didn't think he was that good at it or getting it and that is when his Instructor accepted him and invited him to Course 2 that she was thankful and amazed at how beautiful of a job he had done and could do and she gave him a coupon for the next class and a free Wilton Cake Decorating Book.

In Course 2 was Flowers...

He again had some difficult moments and times in class and getting up but, he didn't give up and wouldn't give up.

He would shed a few tears and pick up his Decorating bag and go again. [I  have shed a few tears for his cake class when the cakes have fallen or not turned out at all].

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

By the end of Course 2 (making all the flowers and everything needed) the last Class for Course 2 was putting together this beautiful lovely cake, He did a amazing job.

This cake he gave to his Sister for her 5th Birthday.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Miah didn't hesitate to take Course 3 and his Instructor was pleased to have him returning.

He was excited to work with Fondant although he doesn't like the taste of it (although he does like Silk Fondant) better he does love decorating with it.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

When Miah learned what fondant was like, felt like, tasted like and how to work with it, we were playing with play dough one day and he made this out of play dough.

I thought it was great because he used no templates or nothing just his play dough tools and what he had learned in class.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

During Course 3 Miah had to make more flowers lots of them for the big cake at the end.

Each class they made flowers...

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Also some Fondant Flowers

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

So he could put together this Amazing Wedding Cake by a

10 year old.

By the end of Course 3 everyone in Miah's classes were proud of him, employee's at the store, his instructor and most of all Me

(his mom) I knew he could do it.

Miah is very well known in the Store he took the classes at, they all love his cakes.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Now Miah had Successfully Completed Courses 1, 2 and 3 and earned the respect he deserved, he proved to himself and others that he could do it and did.

He has come along way not only in cake decorating skills but, his patience, intelligence, motor skills and more.

There was one class offered but, not part of the courses per say but, he decided he wanted to just go ahead and take it the one class he had been looking forward to all summer and the last.

Fondant and Gum Paste

(which he has discovered he doesn't like the taste of gum paste either).

His First Cake in Fondant And Gum Paste

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

His fondant and gum paste class this month of September wasn't to bad some of the other courses were more difficult I think for Miah due to what needed to be made and how but, he did it.

He made this most lovely Favor Box [for his very last cake for class not forever of course, he wants to be on Food Network Someday and he still wants to take more classes and attend some of the Wilton School Camps and Classes for kids next year as well as some other classes the store will be offering].

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

He made these flowers and leaves for his final cake

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Now for Miah's last cake he decided to make a Dummy Cake, Fake Cake, or Display Cake whatever you wish to call it...it's not real.

He wanted to make this kind of cake so that he could keep it around for awhile like a reward or trophy for all his hard work.

Here is Miah in his Cake Class Monday Sept. 29th, 2008 working to put his very last cake for class together, he had to press hard on his template cutting tool.

Being that Miah is only 10 years old sometimes he hands were too small or he isn't strong enough yet which was a disadvantage for him but, he would try and many times get what he was trying to do and when he couldn't his instructor would come help. {But, she always allowed him to try first}.

Here is Miah working with his Instructor.

Here is the Last Cake For Class Miah has put together his

Display Cake:

I Thank Miss. Judy for giving Miah the chance and opportunity to take part in her Class.

Miah and I miss her Already.

{Miah hopes to take another class with her soon and or come back next year for some refresher in Course 2 and 3}.

Thank you Miss. Judy

Welcome To "Barracuda Corner"

My name is Sheila wife to Steve, I was on a path of Preschool Teacher and instead was directed to Homeschooling Mom to 5 children ages 17, 12, 10, 8 and 5. We are going into our 12th year of homeschooling. Some of my education and or talents are...a love of animals/petting zoo, plants, love to clean/organize, cooking/baking trying new recipes, some canning, working in my yard gardening, weeding, making it lovely (although i don't get to do that enough), love to write and love to write children's stories although none published, love to read for fun and to learn~if I want to know about something I love to read to educate myself and to educate the children, love the smell of crayons and to color, love to paint especially the desire of watercolor painting the real stuff, and love to play with playdough with the kids..there's more but, I can add to it. I am not perfect just because we homeschool or love and serve God, I make mistakes like anyone else, spelling mistakes, the way I do or say things, just because we homeschool doesn't change the fact we are still human. I created our homeschool blog for it to be a log or extention of what we do and hopefully to share with and inspire someone else out there who is homeschooling or thinking of it. I hope our blog will make you laugh, smile, brighten your day, encourage or energize you.
