Breaking the Internet Addiction--8 days and counting!

Posted in Blogging

Okay, people, rejoice with me! My name is Sheila and I'm a political news junkie, and it's now been 8 days since I've been on a political website!

I know most of you probably think that's insanely geeky or something, but I really was a junkie. You should have seen me poring over the election results! But they depressed me, and I think it cured me. Ever since 9/11 I've been on the internet constantly following world news and keeping up with politics, and it just got to be too much. I'm a writer by profession, and when I'm not homeschooling I have deadlines and stuff to do, and too much of that wasn't getting done because I was doing all this "research". So I turned it off, and now I just keep up my own website and do homeschoolblogger. It's so much better!

Do any of the rest of you have these problems? I'd love to feel like I had some company!

Trying to Turn the Internet Down

Posted in Blogging

Hello, my name is Sheila and I'm a politcsaholic. It has been 18 hours since I've last signed on to a political news website.

I have tried sooooo many times to cut down on my internet use, but I think the elections may have done the trick! I was not overly thrilled when I woke up this morning, to say the least, and perhaps this is what I needed to sign off for good. I want to keep blogging, and keep writing, but sometimes I just waste so much time on the internet that I don't get things done--you know, like cleaning the house and teaching the kids :).

Well, okay, the kids do get taught. But perhaps not as well as I would like.

Do any of the rest of you really battle with internet or email "addictions"? I'm really going to give this one to God and ask Him to help me focus on what's truly important!

Letting your kids on the internet....slowly!

Posted in Blogging

Well, a few weeks ago I finally broke down and let my kids on the internet. They have about the most restrictive parental controls available, and in some cases I even made them stricter than what the package defaults were.

My 11-year-old, for instance, by their definition, should be allowed access to sex education sites. Since I am extremely unimpressed (that's the nice way of putting it) with what passes for sex ed, I unchecked that so that this is also blocked.

Their search engines are also very, very narrow.

I remember I was once writing an article for a magazine about the plague of child prostitution in Thailand. I googled that without realizing what was likely to come up! It just shows you how you can have a totally innocent motive and still end up with terrible stuff. A friend of mine's 7-year-old son once googled "Little Red Riding Hood" and got some rather surprising links.

So I tested both those searches and nothing bad came up at all (the engine wouldn't even do the first one). So I felt a little more confident.

The way MSN sets up their email they can only send and receive email from addresses that I approve. So no junk mail or anything.

And then, as the final icing on the cake, I set them up with blogs. If any of you have daughters aged 8-13 who are on homeschool blogger and might want a "friend", you can check them out at KatieCutie and BeccaTheGreat.

It is nervewracking when your kids "get out there", isn't it?

Anybody know the code for adding a banner?

Hi everybody!

I created a banner and uploaded it and I want to add it. Does anyone know the code? And does anyone know how to ensure it's the right width, etc?

Just answer in the comments or email me. Thanks so much!

Okay--Here's how you add categories to your template!

Posted in Blogging

Thanks so much to those who responded to my plea yesterday to figure out how to add categories to your template. I did it, and it works great!

Here's your tutorial for those of you who want to try, too:

Go into Edit Template and find the place you want to put them. I know it's hard to read the HTML, but it should be below "My Links" or something like that.

Now you add your heading, something like this:

Categories

You can call it "What I Write About", or "My categories", or whatever you want.

The h2 thing tells the computer to put it in a heading 2 format. You can also use h3, depending on what your particular template is set up like.

Then you're going to type in the links to your category pages. Basically, every category you add has its own page. This is how you do it:

For each of your categories, you're going to add a line like this:

Blogging

You'll have to replace the name of your site in there (ie. don't use SheilaG), and then type in the name of your category (in this case, Blogging). Then type in the word that you want to appear. (See where it says blogging a second time?). You could put in "About Homeschool Blogger" in that place, too. Just make up whatever title you want for the category.

Then do a
which inserts a line break so your next category starts on the next line.

Let's say your next category is a two word category. You'll have to go like this:

Homeschooling Trends

When you type in the title of the page (ie. the first time it appears on the line), you have to add the plus sign (+) between the words. When you type it in the second time (which is the title that appears on your sidebar), you can type in whatever you want, because it's just text.

And that's it. I hope that helps you! It worked for me. Just put in comments if you have any other questions.

I Figured Out How to Change Colours in my Template!

Posted in Blogging

Hey all!

I've been changing my template around because I didn't think the last one I had was all that readable.

So I chose a new one--it's simple, but readable, and that's my new standard.

But I didn't like the colours at the side because the hyperlinks became almost invisible. So I figured out how to change the colours.

You go into "Edit Template", and look for where it says background color. Then you just replace whatever colour is there (it's a six number or letter code) with what you like better.

To see all the colours available in HTML code, you can go here.

It works really well! I'm not sure I like what I have, but at least now I can change it!

What I really want to do is to figure out how to add my categories to the links at the side. That I don't know! If anyone does, can you tell me? Thanks!
