I have finally decided that we are going to do the workboxes that are discussed in Sue Patrick's book on Workboxes. You can check out more information here: Workbox Systems Basically what you do is to set up a set of boxes with the day's tasks in them. Then as the child works through the boxes they know that when they go through and get to the last box, they are done. Now Sue says that the "shoebox" style and rack is the ONLY way to go. She is very adament that the child must see that they are getting somewhere with their work and that her plan is the only way to work it. LOL, I have never been one to always follow when someone says--YOU HAVE TO DO IT MY WAY OR NO WAY. I have to prove them wrong. Or at least try my hardest to look like an idget bad enough for them to say TOLD YA!
Actually I just won't have the room for 4 sets of the shoeboxes and racks. So I have had to come up with an alternative. And these are what I have chosen. They are fun, full of color and about 1/2 the size of the racks. Plus they have wheels and I can move them whenever I want, where ever I want!!
And the best part, they are on sale right now through amazon!! They normally sell for $69.95, but they are on sale for $41.97! That's a savings of almost $30! EACH! Here is a link to them if anyone is interested:
I am not sure for how long but as of 12:00 am on the 18th of September, they are listed at that price.
My plan is to use them just like the workboxes, but I will have the numbers velcroed on and the girls will remove them when they are finished with each task. So they will still get the visual "i'm getting this done--WHoo HOO" feeling!
Anyways, I don't have them yet as they are set to be delivered next Friday. And we won't be putting them up until we get moved in--which hopefully will be around then--ok shortly after that anyways. So it will be a while yet before I can "report back" on how well it's working. But I can say that the last couple of weeks we have been working on getting the girls more and more independent. And I must say that except for the fact that my 10 year old seems to think I'm piling more and more work on her, she IS getting better at it. And my 12 year old is just loving having the control. (well we did get her a net book for school work with a DVD reader. And she thinks she's hot stuff now! But it helps so much to have her on her own!!)
Hey all, I have been playing around. I have been wanting to implement some activities for the vocabulary. And so I tried inputting the words into www.edhelper.com. But then I realized that those would be copyrighted. Therefore, I would not be able to post them!
So I went searching for another program that wouldn't be copyright protected. I found an "add in" that will work with Office and with Open Office. There is a free download available. And of course there is a premium version. The premium version gives you a "better' crossword puzzle, word search, flash cards, and bingo cards. The basic version gives you EVERYTHING ELSE. It's a wonderful little add in and it gives you so many options: Word jumbles, sentence jumbles, verb tense, missing punctuation, missing letters, and so much more. You get to try the premium abilities 3 times before purchase--that's 3 times for each "macro" so 3 crosswords; 3 sets of flash cards etc. I used them for the first 3 units and I must say that even with a few minor adjustments, I am sold on it! And the best part--my worksheets are not copyright protected so I can do what I want with them!! Which in turn benefits you!
So that being said, Units 1-3 are ready for download! (or will be as soon as I upload them!!) I will create an instructions sheet to go with it to explain a few things about the vocab packets, but most is self-explanitory.
Organization is the bane of every homeschooler's day. We fight paper battles, we fight school supplies, we fight books. we even fight art and craft supplies day in and day out. Throw in lesson planning, and housekeeping-it's no wonder everyone calls homeschoolers crazy fanatics. we must look a little wild from searching for that elusive book that we had planned on reading to the kids that are trying to shove all the notebooks they can onto the smallest possible shelf that can't possibly hold them. We have our hair out of place due to looking in the laundry basket that our youngest just decided to dump on top of our heads in the hope of Helping mom look for that book that she just has to have.
The delivery men that stop by our place just shake their heads and wonder when my kids come up to the door dressed in odd attire and talk just a little bit funny (because it is Ancient History we are learning here!)
So what do we do with all of it? well if my kids had anything to do with the decision making it would all end up under their bed or in their, GULP, closet. But that just won't do . . .
So we have tried many different options. The first that I liked was a tower. It reminded me of a classroom "mailbox" or an office In/out box. it had individual compartments for each subject. Now this was just fine for 2 kids. but I was always concerned that it would topple over somehow as it was a bit tall. And when this "school year' started, I needed room for the Preschooler! (and the toddler that just has to prove he's better at this then his older sister!)
My next plan, and I'm still using it partially, is the two cupboards that we placed the mural on (Ocean Mural). They are very nice to have and they hold a massive amount of educational supplies! Each of the kids had a small cubby to hold their notebooks and folders on the bottom shelves. We used the Mailbox system without the shelves so the notebooks fit perfectly!! The top shelf of one cupboard was reserved for mom's books. And the other cupboard held all the art and science expirement kits. (Can we say overflowing!)
That was going rather well for us. A bit tight and every time we purchased a new resource or new art item, our space was getting more and more cramped! And our dining room was getting more and more cluttered, more and more overwhelmed with "SCHOOL." So I knew I needed to break down and do what i do best--lol rearrange. Ok maybe not best, but it sure is fun! So what i did was bring in something that was wasting space in the garage. It's a set of cupboards and drawers with a small counter top. These are inexpensive white cupboards (much like the ones you'd find in your kitchen) that we had purchased for use in our laundry room in our last house (this house is too small for them or so I thought!) I put them along our kitchen counter under the bar. I then assigned a cupboard to each child (which they have decorated to their own unique style) So, My space has exploded!! I now have 2 shelves for all MY planning and curriculum/reading books. And a full cupboard to house the art and science supplies.
So these cupboards can be found at your local hardware store. we purchased them about 4 years ago for $150.00 at our local Menards (or was it Home Depot??) Anyways, they were wonderful in the Laundry room, but this has really opned up things in the Dining room/School area.
Here is a picture (two actually) of our storage area. One DD12 has to still decide on what she is doing for her door, but as you can see it has really livened up the place!! :) There is two things that don't normally sit there: the sewing machine case has a different home normally, but I am in the middle of making a "china" dress for DD9 and it needs a temporary home. The Boxes at the near end also don't normally go there, but I've still gotta find new homes for them! And I've misplaced a drawer some how. I think it's out in the garage . . . . WAY TOO COLD to go on a drawer search! LOL, it'll have to wait a couple weeks until it warms up a bit more.
Here is a picture of our "wall." There are a few more things on other walls, like a world map and timeline, but this is our Stuff. The white board is just a piece of plywood with white board paper applied to it (can be purchased for about $15-$20 at a teacher supply/office supply type store. It's a HUGE roll. I've used this board for over 2 years now and I'e had NO problems with it, and I have never recovered it. But I do wish I had added a frame as the Littles like to write on the board and they are not so good at staying ON IT. LOL.
The drawers on top are very nice to keep things organized such as rulers, white board markers, claculators etc.. I also have (not pictured) a "bathroom caddy," at the right of the white cupboard and beneath the white board, that holds our math manipulatives. (It's narrow as it is designed to go between the John and the sink) but it holds all our uni-blocks and shapes, money, base ten units etc. The blue thing about the center of the white board is our pencil caddy. It is a lazy susan type caddy, so it spins. we found this on sale with all the rest of the School supplies back in August at a Staples I believe. We move it every day to the center of our dining room table so we have everything we need--or what we need most days anyways.
I don't know if the pictures really detail this, but this is a teeny TINY area. The first set of pictures is directly in front of the second set. So the second picture I am taking between my dining room table and the first set of cupboards. there is about 1 1/2 feet between the two cupboards--just barely large enough to open the doors. The Table is just far enough away to open the kids' cupboards. If I had lowered the camera any, i would have had the dining room table in the shot as it is almost halfway in front of the right cupboard. So as I said TINY! You don't need to have a lot of space, just a great storage area!!
Please don't think our areas stay this neat. It's only this neat once a week! :) IF THAT! Projects always take over.
I explained before a loop is A plan for getting it all done. Not just the first few subjects, or even the most "important" subjects, but also the ones that constantly get set aside. I have spent this entire weekend trying to come up with something that resembles what I would LIKE to get through. So this is it! My final draft! LOL, at least until i make a change or two!
This is the basic loop. On Monday we will start on Science. Then we will work around the loop until our time limit is up. generally we will be working from 8 am to 11 am on this group loop. Then while the older two work on their own personal loops, below, I will work on the two littles and focus on alpha/numeric recognition. Now my goal is to get our loop ALL done by 11 am. And on good days we can easily get it done. It’s the rest that was getting lost. So I have implemented a personal loop as well! Each of the older girls have their own personal subjects that they need to work on. MOST can be accomplished with little or no help from nosey mom. So this will help teach them a bit of responsibility for personal tasks as well as getting typing in each week. Each girl has aset number of times I want the Loop accomplished each week. DD12, must complete it at least 3 times. DD9 only needs to accomplish it twice. LOL, if they get it done on Tuesday however, I’ll be adding to that! ;) Here are their personal schedules.
This is DD9's schedule. She is to accomplish this loop twice each week.
This is DD12's schedule. She is to accomplish this loop three times each week.
Hopefully that will be readable. if not, please be sure to download it using the link to the left or by clicking HERE: http://www.mediafire.com/?mjjgjgh2mwy for a DOCx version.there is also a . PDF version available. Just take a look for it.
I am a Homeschooling parent. I have not always been one though. I was against teaching my own children for many reasons. First, that is a teacher’s job, I have the utmost respect for dedicated teachers. Second, I loved school, well the learning part anyways. And I had hoped my children would as well. And last, I thought that homeschoolers were fanatical. Why else would they keep their children from such a normal pass time? That has all changed in the last few years however. I am now a firm believer that if a situation like ours exists, then further action is needed by the parent. I am a parent, and because of that I have a unique understanding and can teach my child to her strengths. And work with her one on one every day on her weaknesses.
I do have a lot of respect for teachers. I have many memories of dedicated teachers forcing me to give my best and never accepting less than the best. I have memories of projects that really soaked in to me and taught me concepts that I was struggling to understand. And only a dedicated teacher can do that. I firmly believed that. Now however I have found that teachers today are not the teachers I grew up with. I have had more than one teacher teach my child with little regard toward her needs, and no honesty toward my child’s abilities. I have always asked for updates on my children and for her they always came back the same, “oh she’s doing great’ “she’s at the top of her class” only to find out that she’s struggling getting the basic levels of reading. If she was the top of the class, where were the rest of the students? And quite frankly some of her teachers were not only incompetent, but lazy. One teacher wouldn’t even move from her chair to ensure that her students were understanding the lessons being taught.Nor did she ensure that the students were under her control. My daughter came home crying everyday due to feelings of inadequacy because she didn’t understand and from the effects of fellow students cutting her shoelaces in class, stealing her supplies and the such. I can provide those same wonderful projects that I remember. Any person can access teachers resources. I may not know how to get up in front of a room and teach 30 children at once, but if I am qualified to help with my child’s homework that takes 4 hours after school, why am I not qualified to assist my child in their main educational needs?
I did enjoy learning when I was in school, however I despised the petty jealousies and dramas that I faced every day. I didn’t like the way everyone had to act alike to be liked. I didn’t’ like the way children were so cruel to each other. And that was years ago. The cruelty that kids go to these days is extreme. Think I’m exaggerating?Look at Columbine High School. Look at all the other school that have gone through student enforced hostage situations. All were brought on either by the student experiencing the cruelty of others, or those wishing to inflict that cruelty. In my day the harshest thing I had to deal with was name calling and my pigtails being pulled in her grade. She’s dealing with threats of bodily harm, laughter over her mistakes (typical I admit), ruining of her clothing while she is wearing them, and theft of supplies and other personal belongings. And this was 1st grade!!!
I am now one of those self-proclaimed fanatics. I am fanatical about my children’s education. And that’s it. I have met many home school parents and though many do teach their children from a religious stand point, it is far from the only reason why many home school. My children have unique strengths even from each other. What works for one child will not necessarily work for the other ones. I have the ability to tailor their learning. I can find resources that will best suit each one. Take spelling for example, one child learns quickly and prefers to move on daily with new words to master. And just work on the words that she ‘trips’ over. My other child however ‘trips’ over almost every word. And so for her Moving on slowly and reviewing constantly is the way to go. A teacher in a public school does not have the luxury of speeding through for one student, and holding back for another. She has 28 other students she’s working with. How is it possible for her to cater to every student? She can’t obviously. She is trained to work with the large group. Not on the individual basis.
So what has caused me to change my mind? My children. I have 4 and they are each different. When my oldest was starting school it was so exciting for her. Learning comes as naturally to her as it does to me. My 8 year old on the other hand has struggled since day one. My younger two kids are each just as different. And if I have 4 very unique children, how many different types of learners will a teacher with 30 students face every day? Now a dedicated teacher, one who teaches with her/his heart, can find a way. I know, because I have had those wonder filled teachers light up my own learning experiences in ways that I never would have that to be a learning experience, but others needed so badly. Those teachers are so hard to find. Many teachers now only teach for a paycheck. And a teacher that is only there to fill the need of a job cannot hope to achieve the necessary engagement that is needed to truly teach the students.
Is this the only way to teach children? No of course not. Each family has their own unique needs. Ours just requires a bit more individualized attention. Someone else’s may need the group setting to learn. Are there still dedicated teachers out there giving their heart to their students? Of course and I applaud their efforts. I pray that they will light up their student’s lives as my beloved teachers did for me. And I hope as my children look back, they will think fondly of the lessons I teach them and remember the times we’ve had searching for dinosaur bones and fossils, creating ocean exhibits, taking spelling words down to their phonetically sounding pattern and just the time we’ve had and the laughter we’ve shared. I may not be trained for a class room, but I am trained on how to work with my children.
It's just a little of this and a little of that. Basically our way of sharing what we're doing. We have been doing MFW (My Father's World)! We'll be bringing in a little of Charlotte Mason and Ruth Beechick. And a WHOLE LOT OF US!
