Mar. 30, 2009 Taking Notes--pictures added!
Well I promised Pictures of the notebook. I wasn't planning on getting to them for a while, but I had someone ask about them So I decided to step it up a notch on the "to do list"!
So here we go:
You will need a spiral notebook for this exclusive for your subject. Here is a link to the directions again: Spiral Notebook Notes Directions For our Example, I have a couple pages of a random notebook. DD is not ready to start General Science just yet, so I don't have her notebook purchased. So this is just a 1/2 used one we had laying around. I do recommend a brand new one for this.
Now if you follow the directions steps 1 through 4 are basic to do steps--such as providing the notebook, going through the text alone and together etc. Important things, but not something I can show with a picture or two! So don't skip them!!
Some of the next steps I feel are out of order and get a bit confusing if you try to go in order. So I am trying to consolidate in the pictures and explanation. The first thing you need to know is to SKIP the very first page of the notebook. So open your notebook, you will see the Right hand page and the back of the cover--make a title page if you want or just skip it! Otherwise this won't layout right. I will explain the right side of the two page layout, then the left side. They do lay out right next to each other, not back to back! (You can of course do this any way you want! Make it work for you and your child!)
Picture #1: this picture is of the RIGHT page. This is the page that you will make your notes on. It is in basic outline format. Each Heading and subheading is another layer of the outline. You just paraphrase the paragraphs "theme" for each step down. Sorry you can't really read it, but it's the best I could get. :{ Here is a link to a PDF that shows the page in great detail. (Notes Right Page) Notice that I have added in any important information but mainly I just did a 2 or 3 word entry about the paragraph. I've also added in at the bottom the review question. (Note answer is not given as this is an example and I don't want any kid having an easy answer (LOL, mainly mine! as she is going to be reading this at some point!)

Picture #2: For the Left page you need to set it up with 3 sections- Vocabulary, Maps/Charts/Graphs and Important people/Events. Just have it set up about equal distance down the page. You will add a column down the left edge that says page. (please note: Mine says section. The reason for this is that my daughter is using the dvd version of the Apologia General Science Course therefore no page numbers, but it does have sections. If she had the text book I would use page # instead of section) Here is a direct link to the PDF that you can download if visibility isn't too good. ( Left Notes Page)
So as your child reads and makes entries on the right page for each paragraph, you will have them write down any vocabulary words, any charts, and any important people (or events) that are mentioned. So in this example 6 words are mentioned in bold print, there is 1 chart and 1 person is named in the first section of the chapter. (Stopping at the review question was a natural stopping point in the reading and a good place as the page was filling up!) Please note that I did add the section # that will correspond with the reading section or link to the proper page to find this information again. Also note--I didn't define the vocabulary. there are two reasons for this. First I was lazy! LOL, honest and true! Second--you may have your child write the vocabulary on index cards or on flip cards or not at all. You could have your child write it in (which is why I put the section column on the left edge). I personally will have DD write in short definitions as reminders.
I hope this helps everyone!!

QUICK UPDATE!!
I am using this concept for her Math as well. I added a Table of contents to the inside of her composition notebook. It is a simple grid that lets her put a quick entry (like ratios) and a page number. The page number would be the page in her notebook--not the text book. I don't have a download, lol, because I lost it when my computer crashed. But I just used excel to create a grid that is 6 columns wide with as many rows as wold fit in a full page with 1" margins all the way around. The titles in the first row were: Topic, page, Topic, Page Topic Page. I gave topic columns more room than page columns. She is only on chapter 1, but she uses her notebook quite often to remind her of different concepts. So I think this is worth it.

Mar. 29, 2009 Taking Notes
As I was going through some of my files yesterday I came across something I downloaded from Somewhere. I have no clue where I got it. however it is a really great way to teach how to take notes from a text book.
Now I know most homeschoolers don't follow a text book philosophy, but some times it's just a necessity to go with a text book. We are using them for science for instance.
Also, if your child moves on to college they will more than likely have to crack open more than one text book! This is a great idea to lay it all out in a notebook with everything having a location and a place. Truly whoever created this really did a fantastic job!!
I will be helping My oldest with her science notebook for the first chapter-Apologia General Science. After we get it all set up, I'll take pictures of it and then post them as a follow up.
But take a look at the instructions until then! :) You can download it from the Shiver Downloads section of the right board or go straight to the download here: Instructions
I hope it helps someone and if anyone knows where it came from, I would love to know so I can give proper credit where it is due!
