Sep. 15, 2005 - Does Homeschooling Work for Single Parents?

There's an interesting discussion about homeschooling on LaShawn Barber's blog here:

http://lashawnbarber.com/archives/2005/09/14/if

LaShawn Barber is advocating private school or homeschooling.  One commentor generalized that homeschooling "does not work" for single parents or families that "need" two incomes.  Oh really?  Seems to be working just fine for my single-parent family.

If you're a single parent and homeschooling is working for your family, you might want to chime in.

I'm single parent that would like to homeschool, but I really don't see how it would work.

I never thought I would be able to do it but thanks to the dismal job market in Texas, it has become possible! You just have to open your mind to the possibilities. You can teach any time of the day or night and any day of the week. You don't have to follow the regular school schedule. The most important thing for me was freeing myself from debts. If I need to take some time off to work, I can work a temp job and still homeschool. Flexibility is key. I can tell you that it was much more difficult keeping a full time job when I had to go to teacher meetings
3-5 times per week and/or eat lunch with my child 3-5 times a week so he could make it through the day. You have to keep your mind on the big picture here. It's possible but you have to be willing to make your child your TOP priority. Hang in there! I'm proof that it's possible and the results have been positive thus far.

It was great to read your blog. I'm a single mom who has been homeschooling for over four years. It seems to be working for us to. For us, it's always amazing to see how the Lord has provided for the next need before we know we have it. Maybe a mustard seed of faith is all it takes to make it work for single parents.

It can be done! I'm still kind of surprised that it can, but I'm proving it every day in this my second year.

I really a good website for single parents. I like your concept of home schooling. And i think it is going to be popular because of increase in rates of single parents. So keep-up the good work.
