2009-Mar-8 - History to Sink Your Teeth Into That's Flexible & God Honoring!
Do you need flexible teaching materials for history?
Are you worried about finding the *right* book or resource to match up with your plans?
Do you need a plan?
What about teaching your child the KNOW God's hand towards humanity throughout the ages?
I have one of the BEST resources for teaching history!
TruthQuest History is a literature approach to tackling a chronological study of history with a guide written by Michelle Miller.
TQH offers guides for both younger students and older ones. The younger student guides are the American History for Young Students Volumes I (1450's -1800), II (1800-1865) and III (1865-2000). We have used these guides, and Mrs. Miller gives many many options for using different books with the idea that these guides are just that~guides! We thoroughly enjoyed the commentary portion of the guides and their focus is show in history how God has related to mankind and man's response to God. There are two BIG TWO Questions that students are asked to answer in response to each event in history. I'm NOT going to spoil it for you. . . Also one of Mrs. Martin's techniques in her quide is to GET YOU reading! She doesn't give it all away, but creates a curiosity and question in the minds of the children as they are taken through the guides. We LOVED it!
This time, we looked at The Middle Ages (500-1400)!
I adore history and found that again Mrs. Miller gave us bits of information that didn't overwhelm but peaked our curiosity to dig a little deeper into the events of the early church and the events and people that helped to shape the world.
While there are books suggested, that is just what she gives, suggestions! With her guides, you can go to the public library and find books that you want your children to read to explore the people and events not some that are so essential that if you can't find them it's a big pain or you are stuck! There are a few, but very few out of print books listed, and she even gives some indication if there are 'gray' areas or other possible questions regarding her suggested reading list. What I did is I wrote into the guide my own book resources to add to her list or checked off the ones I used she suggested so that in my history rotation I would remember what I had already used.
The flexibility doesn't end with book choices either. You can scrapbook, lapbook, notebook, wall chart...Mrs. Miller leaves all this up to what you want to do. TQH is God's history with some Think Write exercises which are essay questions to get students thinking! It's in depth but not overwhelming!

There are sample pages from each of the guides for you to read and other resources. A table of contents is available for all the guides online for you to see!

...that I quoted both your TruthQuest and ToG reviews for the summer issue of TOS. I needed 50 word excerpts about each one, and you were the only one who had written them so far! Thanks!
