2009-Jun-5 - Freebie Radio Programs...Teach listening!
When I was a girl, yeah...there was TV...but I didn't have one in my room like kids do today. Our only one was in our living room, and when I was sent to bed, I was usually still wound up so I'd turn on my radio. I had to play it quietly or Mama would hear it and fuss, but I found some of the neatest programing at night as the airwaves I guessed were more clear because it seemed I could get stations from very very far away...
I found radio theater in these late night excursions with my radio, and I fell in love! I lay there listening as stories were dramatized and told to my hungry and eager ears. My imagination soared in that still quiet bedroom where if I'd turned on the light to read, trouble awaited me...after all I was supposed to be going to sleep! I listened each night, and each day patiently waited for the hour when I knew the story would begin right where it had left off the night before.
Listening is a lost art for our children. We know this by how much we have to do sometimes to gain and keep their attention. But let's be honest. How much out there is screaming for their attention? I hate going into stores and other places that have loud music that disrupts my quiet thinking and concentration. I was at the local bowling center this week with loud awful music. My head pounded as I tried to listen to my friend talk with me. She was annoyed too. Wonder WHO was enjoying the stuff? AND even my local YMCA has music going in their swimming area~ick! WHERE is the time to wind down?
I am going to suggest that quiet homes are havens, and I believe that listening skills are as essential to our child's education as will be the R's we are working so hard to give them.
Listening, the art of intently hearing what is being said and meant is crucial to relationships, employment, and education. Huh? What did you say? ???? What student wants to ask his professor to repeat his lecture repeatedly? NOT! And can we ask our pastors to repeat their messages? NOT! We have to listen closely. Then the quiet love language of whispers from our mates...Did we actually hear what was being said? Oh what troubles when we don't get this one right!
It's so important to learn to listen. It isn't easy either with all the noise noise noise and distractions in life, but if we earnestly work at focus and quiet concentration, sitting still or being still as our ears work~our brains work, the job will be better accomplished.
I want to share with you a resource that can build listening skills much like the radio programs of the past for me. The Erskine Family Living Books for the Ears download each week that is a story for our children. They also offer premium membership as well. Wow ~ You can sign up for their weekly newsletter telling what they are offering~
There is a new dramatic story each week!
