somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near
your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully,mysteriously) her first rose
or if your wish be to close me,i and
my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;
nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing
(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens; only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

that is SUCH a fantastic poem... and I SO remember randy landry's feigned shock when we confronted him about his poem.
so anyway, I posted one of my favorite poems on my blog too. I hope you like it.

I thought "Randy Landry" was Dr. H.'s poetic pen-name until I saw his comment here... unless his comment is cleverly designed to protect his true identity!

randy landry was my roommate in college. and yes, he always wrote his name like that (no capital letters) a la e.e. cummings. randy was a great friend. he and Sarah were friends before I got to college. when I told him I was interested in her he tried to dissuade me. I'm not sure if he was trying to save me from throwing myself at her (she already had a very cool and very big boyfriend) or if he was jealous because he secretly harbored feelings for her. I always suspected the latter... anyway he died a few years ago. we never heard how. sad how friends slip away.
