Who Does This Help?

There's more and more talk about "impeachment" if the Democrats take the House this November.  Here's the latest image, from the (reliably left-leaning) Huffington Post:

My question is this: does the cartoon help the Democrats or hurt them?  (I'll put my own answer down in the comments.)

And the answer is...

It hurts them.

I don't think America enjoyed the effort to impeach Bill Clinton, and I don't think a lot of people are looking for a re-run. Impeachment talk will fire up the left, but it gives every independent voter a powerful reason to vote Republican.

The problem for Democrats is, once you start talking impeachment, how do you stop? If a Democrat is running for office, you have every right to ask him whether he would vote to impeach the President. If he says yes, it's a problem for most independents and a HUGE motivator for Republicans. If he says no, he's just turned off the Democrat base.

I could be wrong here. But I hope I'm not.

Bismarck famously observed...

...that, while most people claim to learn from their mistakes, he thought it best to learn from the mistakes of others and thereby avoid your own.

I can only conclude that the Democrats aren't familiar with this logic.
