The best way to learn new things is to try them out, right? (You know that--you're homeschoolers!) So let's learn wiki together. Here are the step by step directions to add your blog to KnowHomeschooling, the new homeschool wiki.
Print out these directions or open a second window with the this page open.
Go to the KnowHomeschooling site by clicking here. (I can't figure out how to make homeschoolblogger open a link in a new window, so you'll lose this page when you click!)
Look for the "search" box under the house-shaped logo at top left.
Type the name of your blog (I typed "Somerschool")
If your blog isn't already listed, it should say, "There is no page titled [your blog name]. You can create this page."
Click the "create this page" link to add a new page for your blog.
Here's all you need to add your own page. Copy this text and then edit it to make it fit your blog:
[http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/Somerschool Somerschool]: Truth, Justice, and the Homeschool Way. A blog by HSLDA Staff Attorney Scott W. Somerville. [[Category:Blogs]]
Type in a "summary" such as "Added this blog."
Click "Save Page"
Go to the blog page to see if your blog is listed there.
That should work. If it doesn't, leave me a comment. If it does, I'll be able to tell by looking at all the new blogs listed on the wiki!
tahnk you for taking the time to explain wikis and sharing this homeschool wiki. Thanks to your instructions I have added my blog. I have also linked back to you from my blog so other folks can join the wiki world.
I'm on the list, now what? I still have no idea how to work a wiki! I clicked on others listed and they don't have anything there for me to figure out. (This includes you!)
It says I can edit and add and watch and bookmark and, and, and, (pant, pant.)
What am I editing, adding, watching, bookmarking and so on? This is a true Grover moment, "Help!"
I put the Wikipedia def'n of Wiki on my site:
www.homeschoolblogger.com/AmoScribo/155426
with the URL link.
For more in depth info, or to save someone a trip.
My wife Jill and I are the homeschooling parents who created the wiki. We are working on creating an editing guide for the wiki.
I have started the editing guide and you can find it here: http://knowhomeschooling.com/index.php/Category:Editing_Tutorial
We hope to make the editing tutorial as beginner friendly as possible. We are open to suggestions for making it better. Please send your questions or feedback to info @ mantyweb . com, if you need help.
We really hope this becomes a great resource for homeschoolers everywhere.
As for the watchlist, you don't have to worry about most of those tabs (except edit) when you start out. The watchlist is a list of pages that you want to be able to keep track of the chanes for.
For instance, say you wanted to keep track of the changes on the homeschooling blogs page. You would go to that page, click the watch tab and it would be added to your watch list. Then anytime you visit the site you can click on the text "my watchlist" and it will list any changes in the pages you are watching.
You right click on the link and up pops a list. At the top of the list you should see, "Open in New Window." Click it and you will save the one you have open and pop open another one.
Going to blunder about and look at this wiki thingie.
Meanwhile... since I too have no idea how to make it automatically open links in a new window: I usually RIGHT click on the link so that I can select: "Open link in new window." Otherwise I get lost. (Something my husband says I can do in a bathroom with two doors.) ;)
Thanks for the comment on the epic of Gilgamesh! Fascinating you'd been reading a version of it while anticipating a wedding! I've not seen the children's version, but remember the original from college--R rated indeed. Glad the children's one was cleaned up! I may have to hunt it down for my own enjoyment!
Ok, off to look at the wiki! I was there a few days ago but couldn't figure it out. Maybe your post will make it more comprehendable! :D
Scott,
You have to press the "go" button and not the "search" button. I pressed "search" and never got the link that says "edit this page." I looked at the Help page and it says to click "go." Et voila! This time, I got the "edit this page" link and could add my blog, The Thomas Institute.
Thanks for you help in promoting this to us homeschooling bloggers and for helping us learn how to use it!
Karen
Do you have any idea what you've done to your template to make your blog's RSS visible to Yahoo? I'm trying to get mine up on my Yahoo homepage, and although feedvalidator.org says I'm valid, I can't get Yahoo to recognize me. It recognizes you, though. I was hoping you might have an explanation.
But it looks like I might have an explanation for you: to program a link to open in a new window, you have to add this in your href tag: "target=resource window". For example: (open angle bracket) a href (equals) http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/Pomaleedon (space) target=resource window (close angle bracket) "Three for Thee" (open angle bracket, slash) a (close angle bracket)
I hope this helps both of us.
