Maximum Monkeys

OK, monkey-lovers, Daryl has given me all the data we need to figure out just how much of Hamlet one unassisted planet can produce.  Here are our input paramters:

  • Available "monkeys" : 3 * 10^22 amino acids
  • Keystroke speed: 1*10^10 reactions per second
  • Available time: 4.5 billion years

We have seen that a million monkeys can type "Act I, Scen" in a million years, and a mole of monkeys can type almost twice as much: "Act I, Scene I.  Elsi".  Now let's put the pedal to the metal and see what time and chance can do if you really let them rip:

  • Time=0.0000000000 seconds: 1.81E+46 "monkeys" start "typing."
  • Time=0.0000000001 seconds: 3.61E+44 monkeys hit "A"
  • Time=0.0000000002 seconds: 7.22E+42 monkeys add "C"
  • Time=0.0000000003 seconds: 1.44E+41 monkeys add "T"
  • Time=0.0000000004 seconds: 2.89E+39 monkeys add " "
  • Time=0.0000000005 seconds: 5.78E+37 monkeys add "I"
  • Time=0.0000000006 seconds: 1.16E+36 monkeys add ","
  • Time=0.0000000007 seconds: 2.31E+34 monkeys add " "
  • Time=0.0000000008 seconds: 4.62E+32 monkeys add "S"
  • Time=0.0000000009 seconds: 9.25E+30 monkeys add "C"
  • Time=0.0000000010 seconds: 1.85E+29 monkeys add "E"
  • Time=0.0000000011 seconds: 3.70E+27 monkeys add "N"
  • Time=0.0000000012 seconds: 7.40E+25 monkeys add "E"
  • Time=0.0000000013 seconds: 1.48E+24 monkeys add " "
  • Time=0.0000000014 seconds: 2.96E+22 monkeys add "I"
  • Time=0.0000000015 seconds: 5.92E+20 monkeys add "."
  • Time=0.0000000016 seconds: 1.18E+19 monkeys add " "
  • Time=0.0000000017 seconds: 2.37E+17 monkeys add "E"
  • Time=0.0000000018 seconds: 4.73E+15 monkeys add "L"
  • Time=0.0000000019 seconds: 9.47E+13 monkeys add "S"
  • Time=0.0000000020 seconds: 1.89E+12 monkeys add "I"
  • Time=0.0000000021 seconds: 3.79E+10 monkeys add "N"
  • Time=0.0000000022 seconds: 7.57E+08 monkeys add "O"
  • Time=0.0000000023 seconds: 1.51E+07 monkeys add "R"
  • Time=0.0000000024 seconds: 3.03E+05 monkeys add "E"
  • Time=0.0000000025 seconds: 6.06E+03 monkeys add "."
  • Time=0.0000000026 seconds: 121 monkeys add " "
  • Time=0.0000000027 seconds: 2 monkeys add "A"
  • Time=0.00000067 seconds: 1 monkey adds " "
  • Time=0.0000034 seconds: 1 monkey adds "P"
  • Time=0.00017 seconds: 1 monkey adds "L"
  • Time=0.0084 seconds: 1 monkey adds "A"
  • Time=0.42 seconds: 1 monkey adds "T"
  • Time=21 seconds: 1 monkey adds "F"
  • Time=17 minutes: 1 monkey adds "O"
  • Time=15 hours: 1 monkey adds "R"
  • Time=30 days: 1 monkey adds "M"
  • Time=4 years: 1 monkey adds " "
  • Time=209 years: 1 monkey adds "B"
  • Time=10,450 years: 1 monkey adds "E"
  • Time=523,000 years: 1 monkey adds "F"
  • Time=26 million years: 1 monkey adds "O"
  • Time= 1.3 billion years: 1 monkey adds "R"

We've used up all the carbon on the planet for as long as Earth has been around, and we haven't gotten through the stage directions.  This is all we've got after more than a billion years of monkeying with time and chance:

  • ACT I, SCENE I.  ELSINORE.  A PLATFORM BEFOR...
