Homeschool Blogroll

How to add a "Share & $ave" logo to a Homeschoolblogger site

This is a special entry for homeschoolbloggers ("HSB") who use Tapestry of Grace ("TOG") and want to get credit for helping to share it with others.  Here's what you need to know to add a TOG logo and link to your blog.

  • Go to your HSB control panel.
  • Click "Template"
  • Search for scroll through the HTML code that defines how your page is laid out until you get to text that reads "My Links".
  • On the line BEFORE that, insert the following text, with ONE important change.

Share & $ave

  • The CHANGE you need to make is to replace the "KDAD" affiliate code at the end of the long line above with your own affiliate code.  This is usually an 8 character string beginning with "TOG".
  • Click the "preview changes" button at the bottom of the screen to make sure you got what you wanted.  Click on your new button and make sure it takes you to the Lampstand Bookshelf.
  • Save it if it's right.
Congratulations!  You're up and running!

If you aren't sharing and saving yet, click Share & $ave Logon to get started!

Another Engagement

Some of you know my youngest son David.

Here's today's Xanga entry.  Here's the response.

A Wise Son Makes His Father Glad--How About a Wise Daugher-In-Law?

My new daughter Jessica has posted thoughts on her role as a wife.  She's looking into Proverbs.  Here's where she starts:

The first verse I studied today is Proverbs 12:4 "An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who brings shame is like rottenness in his bones."

She looks at how the fear of the Lord affects her life as a wife.  I taught my son Mike that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.  Now Jessica is teaching me that it is the beginning of a wife's wisdom, too!

Spunky's Giving Stuff Away

Yesterday she reviewed Tapestry of Grace.  Now she's giving it away!  All you have to do is share something you've learned that has made your homeschool better and you have a chance to win.  The more you share, the better your chances!

It's Carnival Time!

The Cates are hosting another carnival--this one's a treat!  (Or a trick.)

Spunky Reviews My Favorite Curriculum!

The Bible says, "Let another praise you, and not you yourself."  Spunky makes that easy.  Her review of Tapestry of Grace is very kind!  She's going to give away a free TOG unit pretty soon, so keep checking her blog to see how to win!

Evolution, Sex, and Government Power

Why does freedom matter?  Here's what happens if you don't have it:

OTTAWA - The Quebec Ministry of Education has told unlicensed Christian evangelical schools that they must teach Darwin's theory of evolution and sex education or close their doors after a school board in the Outaouais region complained the provincial curriculum was not being followed.

"Quebec children are legally required to follow the provincial curriculum ... but these evangelical schools teach their own courses on creationism and sexuality that don't follow the Quebec curriculum," said Pierre Daoust, director-general of the Commission Scolaire au Coeur-des-Vallees in Thurso, Que.

Homeschoolers in Quebec still have an exemption from this rule.  Is it paranoid to suspect that special exception won't last long?

The Carnival is Here!

Yes, folks--the Carnival of Homeschooling has arrived!  Get out your bifocals and pot-bellied stoves--Beverly Hernandez has built it all around Benjamin Franklin.

It's Not a Sock Puppet...

"Sock puppet" is the term bloggers use for people who pretend to be someone else so they can go make comments in favor of themselves on someone else's blog.  If you check out the K-Dad debate at Three Loose Nuts, you'll see someone named "Thor" has been defending me at length.

"Thor" happens to be one of my favorite people (real people, not sock people), and it warms his father's heart to see what he does in his spare time!  When we started homeschooling him twenty years ago, we hoped he grow up to be an independent thinker who would make us proud.

Looks like my work here is done.

Are These Ads Racist?

I am debating Daryl Cobranchi about an ad by a group called America's Pac.  He thinks it is racist, I think it isn't.  We're running polls on our two blogs to see what our respective readers think.  Here's the transcript of a conversation between two black men:

"If you make a little mistake with one of your ‘hos,' you'll want to dispose of that problem tout suite, no questions asked," one of the men says.

"That's too cold. I don't snuff my own seed," the other replies.

"Maybe you do have a reason to vote Republican," the first man says.

Let me know whether you think this snippet, in isolation, sounds "racist" to you.  After you've left an (honest) comment, check out the full transcipt of "Don't Go There" and the other 23 radio ads on the America's PAC "Vote Our Values" site.  Or you can go over to Daryl's site and see the comments there.

A Little Unscientific Sample

I'm looking for input from Christian homeschoolers.  I have heard stories where, as the fathers get more involved in homeschooling, the less "traditional" their homeschool gets.  Is this common?  Are there counterexamples?  I'd love some feedback  from your family.  Feel free to post that here or over at K-Dad.

Feedback from our Seminar

We're racing around speaking, so it's hard to catch up long enough to type in how it's going.  I'm grateful for this dear lady who wrote up her experience at the seminar in Kansas City this weekend.  She says:

Yesterday, DH and I attended a fantastic seminar led by Scott and Marcia Somerville called Building Your Homeschool Together.   It was a beautiful time, visited, I believe, by the Holy Spirit, full of wise counsel and excellent content, led by humble teachers willing to be vessels of God's message to us.

There's more to her write-up.  We'll be in Denver this weekend, and Cincinnati the first weekend in November.  Thanks for all your prayers!

Here in Kansas City

Marcia and I are up early, getting ready for our Saturday seminar.  We're speaking at Harry Truaman's old church in Grandview, Missouri.  It's a hectic but satisfying schedule, but it doesn't leave a lot of time for blogging.

Thanks for Your Encouragement!

You can't imagine how much I appreciate all the kind emails, phone calls, and other words of support I'm getting from people who have heard about our bold leap from the safety of a steady (and noble!) job at HSLDA to this grand adventure of serving families by ministering to homeschool dads.

Here's another way you can encourage us we get started--tell your friends to go to K-Dad and "subscribe."  I need you homeschool moms to sign up to receive what I'm writing for your husbands.  My plan for K-Dad is for me to write, you to read, and your husband to benefit every once in a while when I post something that's right on target for him.

I don't expect dads to read everything I write any more than I expect them to flip through clothing catalogs--but a good helpmeet will find what fits him, fold down the corner, and show it to him when it will do the most good.

Thanks for Your Prayers

We've held our first Building Your Homeschool Together seminar, and it went far better than we deserved!  We've already gotten some very kind feedback, not to mention lots of helpful evaluations.  There's room for improvement, but it's awfully nice to have people tell us they were really helped by all our efforts.

Next stop, Kansas City!  We'll be flying out Thursday morning (way too early) to a seminar in Grandview, Missouri.  Please keep praying for us--we're frantically trying to catch up on all the things that fell behind last week!
