When A Farmer's Daughter Tells You...

Posted in Sagebrush Ranch
That turkeys are dumb...well, maybe you should listen.  Especially if she's your Mom.  Not just listen.  Read between the lines.  They're not really worth the effort?  They're not hardy?  Not too many make it to slaughter?  Something like that.  I wonder if God ever considered using the analogy of turkeys rather than sheep.  Imagine the 23rd Psalm reading, "The Lord is my turkey herder."  Nahhh...doesn't work.  Sheep are at least cute.  Turkeys can be somewhat majestic looking.  But definitely, not hardy.  And why, perchance, would I be wasting space on this whole topic?  You can only imagine...but if you've followed the saga for any length of time since, oh, say, May, you'll know that our attempts at raising turkeys have had minimal successes and multiple failures.  And after this morning's troubles, I attempted...repeat, ATTEMPTED...to seclude the two huge birds so the ducks might have a chance at surviving.  But one (turkey) wanted to fly out the little area, knocking a board down that was not as smartly placed as I had fancied.  I'm about as smart as the turkeys.  Needless to say, a couple of hours since I had last looked in on our feathered friends, I discovered the larger of the two deceased.  In a fit of frustration, I got in touch with Mom, who happened to be at my Grandma's, who said that if I cut it's head off and the blood ran, it was probably still okay to use.

I've gutted and beheaded fish before, but not poultry.  Dh has done chickens, but alas, he was shuttling children to soccer practice.  I was on my own.  The large creature was pretty stiff, and it's feathers pulled out easily, so I had to find it's feet and get it up.  That was fun.  Good thing it was dead...the sharpest knife I had wasn't really efficient.  I did manage to get the head severed.   Didn't drain much blood.  Not enough to count.  Had some of the dc help me find bags for the head and the carcass and the feathers.  DH is handling the disposal of that mess.  As for me...well, I'm proud to say I didn't puke at the whole procedure.  Very unwilling to do this next spring.  I think I'll stick with chickens.  At least, now, I think I could handle the butchering process a little better...maybe?  Maybe.

And of course, Mom, Dad, Grandma, Aunts and Uncles, anyone else who stumbled on my story, I think I'll pay better attention next time someone seasoned gives a little insight into farmy stuff.  Maybe?  Maybe.
