Hello from Freebie Friday at TOS

There are many free resources on the Internet to help with homemaking. I posted about a few of those on the Econobusters blog. I thought I would share them with you. This week I posted about a free E-Book that I found with lessons to teach our kids about homemaking. I think this wonderful resource would make a great addition as a homeschool home-ec course or a good summer class. Even though it is summer, you can still get some spring cleaning done. Here is a great resource that I found recently! It is a free E-Book on spring cleaning. If you need some help in the kitchen area, here is a free E-Book I shared about having a prepared pantry. With all of these freebies, you may need some ideas on how to store them on the computer, so here is my post on how to store E-Books. www.econobusters.com Homeschool Freebies by Jamin We stay pretty busy in the summer. But sometimes there are days when my kids need something new and interesting to do while the temperature soars outside. One fun thing to do is make our own paper toys! There is an unlimited supply of free printable toys online. Below are a few I know my kids would enjoy. I hope yours enjoy them too. Handcraftedfantastictoys.com has an adorable dancing monkey and some fun paper dolls. The toymaker.com has some awesome paper mice that use marbles to make mouse racers! Do you have a hat lover? This site is loaded with printable paper hats you can assemble and wear! How about a fractal fidgit? You can make your own dodecahedron calendar with the free printables at this site! This site has a blank jigsaw puzzle you can decorate, cut, and send to a friend! And one of my favorite sites, Janbrett.com has directions on how to make a milk carton armadillo! And for the preschoolers in your life, how about some paper sandwiches? Be sure to print out the free placemat too! If your preschooler enjoyed the paper sandwiches, be sure to check out the barn play set and kitty play set from the same website. If you want to search through more great paper toys, here are two sites that are loaded with them! Free Paper Toys and Wonder Time. Happy homeschooling! From TOS: Freebie Friday

It's Freebie Friday from TOS:

Summer is the perfect time for casual parties and gatherings. You can have a fun, yet frugal party and, if you gather outside, you don't even have to clean the house! Just check out our May Digest article "A Frugal Memorial Day Get-Together" for some great ideas and wonderful recipes.

A friend of ours (the one with the chickies and pigs) hosts an annual Solstice Party. Friends show up in the early afternoon and stay as long as they like. The hosts provide hamburgers and hot dogs, and guests bring a dish to share. There's always tons to eat and lots of fun. My friends don't spend a ton of money on this gathering, but it's one we all look forward to all year. I've hosted similar gatherings where I will provide a large tub of vanilla and chocolate ice cream, and guests bring toppings or root beer, and we all enjoy sundaes or root beer floats. Simple, cheap, and fun. So what's stopping you? Get partying!

But before you do . . . we need your help! If you've purchased one of our Digests, we'd love your feedback. Please take a moment to let us know what you thought by taking this short survey.

If the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, then maybe the way to your child's mind is through his taste buds? My kids LOVE to learn about history through food! Cooking is not my favorite pastime, but I have learned that preparing different meals with my kids helps them connect with time periods, places, and people in a way nothing else does.

Eating is very personal. So when we experience the foods other people ate, we feel that we know those people in a more intimate way than we did before. Here are some great websites with free information and recipes to help you cook through history with your kids!

Here is a great collection of historic recipes. This is a great place to start because it has links to recipes from different places and time periods.

Freebie Friday

FREEBIE FRIDAY
FROM
THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE MAGAZINE

The Econobusters blog and Molly Digests have been full of information on how to start a garden this year. We have ideas for everything from taking baby steps (my approach) to going whole hog. People across the country who have never gardened before are jumping on the bandwagon as well. The combined benefits of organic food and cost savings are getting hard to ignore. (If you haven't checked out the many resources on our blog, please do!)

But you know what? I think I may be getting brave enough to take an even bigger step! We visited some of our farm friends last night for a barbeque and I "met" their new piglets and some little chickies in the basement. In asking about the chicks, I was told that three laying hens would probably keep our family in eggs and would require very little room. Seems a bit radical as I live in town, but I'm considering it. Interested? Check out this post and offer your thoughts!

From TOS: Freebie Friday

Hello from Freebie Friday! Have you noticed that yard sales are starting to pop up here and there? While it's not full-blown sale season yet, it's the perfect time to hit the occasional sale and make some great scores. While not totally free, sale bargains can often be nearly so. In fact, just last week I picked up three size 2XL Ralph Lauren, short sleeved dress shirts for my husband for 25 cents each. They looked like new and were even ironed and on hangers! This week I spent $16.50 and purchased two pair of baseball cleats, a pair of boy's dress shoes for an upcoming wedding and a pair of Heely's that are getting a real workout! If I'd gone to a retail store I wouldn't have been able to purchase one of these items, let alone all three! If you want to read more inspiring yard sales stories and even learn how to get items completely free, check out my April Digest. And if you're looking to bring in some extra funds by hosting a yard sale you'll find some awesome tips for that as well. Also, be sure and check in regularly at Econobusters.com where I'll undoubtedly be sharing my weekly finds. We'd love to hear about your best bargains as well. molly@econobusters.com Homeschool Freebies Lessons on the History of Food Have you ever wanted to do lesson plans pertaining to food? FoodTimeline.org is the perfect place to start. You'll find a wonderful food timeline chart, and a directory of countless lesson plans. For American history, you can find out what some American presidents' loved to eat. Or what the traditional food and recipes for specific states are. Review historic food prices, the history of dietary recommendations, and learn about food science and technology. If you want to learn more about food from the Bible days, About.com and TCFNJ.com have lists of Bible foods. Clifford A. Write also has a nice section on the history of food. How about food trivia, quizzes, and videos? Check out FoodReference.com for a lot of food fun! Or see how food is grown by taking virtual tour lessons at 4-H Virtual Farm. For more printables and lesson plans, Nourish Interactive has them for your kindergartener through 5th grade students. For the younger kids, MES-English.com has food worksheet printables like The Honeycomb Challenge Board Game. ABC Teach has food coloring pages for the younger kids. To help teach about food and nutrition, USDA Food and Nutrition Services has a printable food pyramid poster, and a MyPyramid Kids Coloring Page for the kids to color for themselves. There are so many things you can do to have fun learning about food. We hope that some of these links will help. Welcome to Freebie Friday!

Welcome to Freebie Friday

Poetry is where a child's writing can really come to life. I love reading my own children's poetry. Sometimes it's serious, and sometimes it is really funny. Here are some great freebies to help your children learn about Poetry.

Lapbooking has become one of my favorite things to do when studying a subject. Homeschool Helper has a wonderful poetry lapbook for children ages 3rd-6th grade. How about trying to write a Haiku? Children's Haiku Garden or In the Moonlight A Worm has many resources to teach your child how to write a haiku. For those early writers, print out lined, shaped paper to write their poetry on. You can also make your poem into a certain shape with Read, Think, and Write.

Poetry 180 is geared towards high school students. They offer one new poem a day, for 180 days. Looking for a certain poem, but can't seem to find it? Try this Poem Hunter It will allow you to look up poetry that may no longer be in print.

Be sure to check out Homeschool Diner for a large list of other free poetry links as well.

In the words of Linda Pastan, "Poetry is not a code to be broken but a way of seeing with the eyes shut".

Enjoy those freebies,

Speakers

Jeff Myers

Jeff Myers is a highly sought-after national speaker whose passion is to help parents pass the baton of Christian faith on to their children and to others around them. Will the next generation of our young people accept the Christian faith and live it, or will they depart from the teaching of their parents because that faith was not carefully and consciously passed on to them?

Author of many books, including his latest titled Handoff: The Only Way to Win the Race of Life, Dr. Myers points out that the baton is not being passed in business, in government, in the church, or in the home. For homeschooling parents who have lived a life of sacrifice in order to homeschool their children, the loss of their children who don’t accept the Christian faith is especially devastating. Dr. Myers offers us real hope in a concerted plan to consciously pass on our faith to our children, and to other young people whom we have opportunity to mentor.

Dr. Jeff Myers has extensive teaching experience and has worked with the Colorado-based Summit Ministries to develop its leadership-training program. He helped write Understanding the Times, the worldview training curriculum used in many American Christian schools and homeschools. He is the author of seven books and several video coaching systems including Secrets of World Changers, Secrets of Everyday Leaders, and Secrets of the Great Communicators, which over 2 million people have used. He is the Founder and President of Passing the Baton International and is an Associate Professor of Communication at Bryan College. Although he has an impressive educational background, his style of speaking is humorous and practical, and parents love him. Come prepared to take home a wealth of valuable nuggets that you can put into practice in your family this next school year to make a real difference in your family’s ability to live a life of faith that lasts into the next generations.

Carol Barnier Carol Barnier

God has this wonderful knack of teaching us His most valuable lessons through some of life's most rattling moments. Several of Carol's journeys (both painful and pleasant) are the fuel of her speaking and writing material. Through a long medical ordeal for her son, involving 13 surgical procedures before he was 3 1/2, Carol learned the powerful lesson that she wasn't in control. When she and her husband couldn't bring themselves to medicate this ADHD child, particularly after his already long medical history, Carol found herself homeschooling. That will grow you & rattle you simultaneously!

She learned over time that all of the traditional methods that she knew and cherished from her own childhood were a recipe for disaster with this very different child. So through much experimentation, coupled with a belief that this child's energy was a gift from God, she developed strategies and teaching methods that worked with his need for constant motion.

The knowledge gained from this experience led to a web site, Carol's Web Corner , and eventually her first book entitled, How To Get Your Child Off the Refrigerator and On To Learning, published by Emerald Books (YWAM).

Life continues to provide many opportunities to look for God's plan and God's gifts in situations that others regarded as "mistakes, defects, things to be changed". This effort to try to see each child and each event through God's spectacles has led Carol to develop workshops on Empowering the Shy Child, or finding the gift that exists in being a highly distractible mom. Carol delights in opening ALL the gifts God has sent into her life, even the most challenging, for she has come to delight in seeing how His plan often runs delightfully counter to the world's plans.

Carol is now a regular speaker at women's groups, state home schooling conferences, and is a popular guest on radio programs such as Moody Radio (311 affiliates), American Family Radio (200 stations), Life Talk Radio (15 markets) and many other individual stations.

LEADERS

NEW HOMESCHOOLERS

While the following workshops were designed to help new homeschoolers, they are suitable for those who have already homeschooled a few years and might want some more help with refining their homeschooling. Record Keeping 101 will give you an overview of many options for fulfilling this legal requirement, and you might find a method that makes your life easier. Educate Yourself First will provide you with a description of the different methods of homeschooling, and after homeschooling yourself for a few years, you might discover a method better suited to the way your family operates than the one you currently are using. Please feel free to attend these workshops even if you have homeschooled many years!

PARENTS OF PRESCHOOLERS

Other Recommended workshops for this track would include Stacy Hill's workshop "Teaching Science and History in the Early Years" Carol Barnier's workshops on "Help! How Do I Teach This Highly Distractible Child?" (Parts I and II) and "Teaching Your Child to Read Made Easy" and Misty Spinelli’s workshop "Putting Together a Delight-Directed Study." The New Homeschoolers’ Track workshops might also be of interest to you. If your child will be 5 years old before September 1st, you should attend the New Homeschoolers’ Reception. If your child is not that old, then you have no legal requirements for homeschooling. The workshop “Educate Yourself First” will provide you with an overview of homeschooling methods so you might start considering which one best suits your family and the children you are teaching.

Puppets of Praise is a Christian puppet team made up of students, faculty, staff and alumni of Bob Jones University. They share the gospel and Biblical principles through scripts and songs (mainly Patch the Pirate songs). Throughout the year they minister to Sunday Schools, children's churches, Bible clubs, nursing homes, and several Chick-fil-a restaurants during their Kids Night. For the second year they will be the featured leaders of the Children's Progam. As always there will be lots of games (including outdoor water games), songs, crafts and, of course, Puppets! The Children's Program is for any 5-12 year olds whose parents have a full ticket.

If you plan on attending HDAC as a group and want to go on the same tour, please sign up all at the same time. By Capitol Staff guidelines, only those who are 3rd grade or older may go on tours. Tours may overlap one another; each is 45 minutes long. The State House is located a short walk across the State House Grounds from the Blatt Building (where Registration is located and where workshops are held).

There are six scheduled tours of the Governor’s Green (Mansion). The Mansion is located a short drive from the State House. There is a special designated parking area on the mansion side of Lincoln Street behind Calhoun and Laurel Streets for those who are touring the mansion. If these spaces are full, please park at the meters along the street. You need to go to the State House Grounds, to the Blatt Building, to Registration to pick up your tickets and get registered for HDAC prior to taking the tour of the Governor’s Green. Please arrange time to find parking and walk to do this. The Governor’s Mansion tour can accommodate 75 people per tour. The South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Museum is located a short drive from the State House Grounds. We have arranged three tour times. You need to show some proof that you are there as part of Homeschool Day at the Capitol in order to gain free admission (ex. HDAC flyer/schedule, HDAC sticker you will get at registration).

The State Art Museum is located a short drive from the Capitol. On April 1st, there is a special exhibit that takes up most of the museum—the cost for this special exhibit is $15. Highlights of the museum are located on the 1st floor and can be accessed for a reduced fee with proof of HDAC attendance (flyer, sticker). www.columbiamuseum.org.

The coupon is good for up to six adults in a party, and provide for one free child admission with each paid adult admission. Admission fees available on the zoo web site www.riverbanks.org .

To Preregister for a tour, send an email to Leslie Graham with the tour name and time desired in the subject line (for instance: Governor's Mansion 11:30).

This event is for all South Carolina Homeschoolers and their families -- not just SCHEA members. The event is FREE except parking - bring LOTS of quarters for the meters if you are parking around the Capitol. Plan your schedule carefully to allow time to get from one activity to another. Be sure your tour times are not overlapping.

All students are invited to create their own Business Card, to introduce yourself to your Legislator. There will be a drawing from all the cards for a special prize.

Capitol Tours are for THIRD GRADE and up ONLY. Tours are FREE, but you MUST pre-register. Tours for both the Governor's Mansion and the Confederate Museum are for any age, but you must preregister for the Governor's Mansion. The museum does not require preregistration, but you must be there for the scheduled times. Email Leslie Graham.

Scavenger Hunt will allow you to learn much more about the capitol grounds, while having fun. Turn your completed list in to the registration desk for a small prize.

Bring a blanket and picnic lunch to enjoy on the statehouse grounds while you listen to the music of both the AAA Homeschool Band and the Midlands Home School Band.

We will hold "Homeschool Day at the Capitol" rain or shine (pray for shine), but the band will not play during lunch if it rains. All other events will be held as scheduled.

Come out for a fun-filled, hands-on Civics Day at the Statehouse in Columbia. You will get more out of the experience if you prepare a little ahead of time. The following ideas are given by way of suggestions for those of you for which this will be a first-ever experience to the Capitol. We're glad you're coming!

Workshops will be run strictly on schedule, in Room 101 of the Blatt Bldg. Doors will be closed at start time, and no one else will be allowed to enter while the workshop is going on, in order to demonstrate respect for our guest speakers. We ask that attendees remove children quickly who are unable to sit quietly. Otherwise, please do not leave during the session.

Most people at the Capitol dress in "business dress," that is suit and tie for the men, and dress, stockings, and heels, or a nice pantsuit, for the women. You don't have to dress this formal, but it is recommended highly that families come dressed very nicely to make an excellent impression on their representatives who are accustomed to this type of dress from their colleagues, and very different from how teens from most school groups appear (i.e. jeans, baggy pants). For older students who aspire to go into politics or business, the following book is highly recommended: The Etiquette Advantage by June Hines Moore published by The Life@Work Co.

Quiet, well-behaved deportment is the order of the day! This applies even in the hallways, elevators, and bathrooms. Good behavior and polite manners will stand out to representatives and make a great impression. Even during lunch outside on the grounds, children should stay with their parents and behave "decorously." This is a good word to look up for Vocabulary! Homeschoolers are often accused of not living in the real world; this is excellent training for our children to demonstrate that we know how to respect others by behaving well in public. This is a good opportunity for parents to teach children about self-restraint and self-discipline, hallmarks of child training and the one admonition specifically mentioned to young men in Titus 2:6. It would be a great family contest to see how well family members encourage one another in modeling self-discipline.

Check out the website www.knowitall.org/letsgo to get a layout of the Statehouse Grounds and the location of the various buildings. Have your children compare the Day at the Capitol schedule with the building plan.

Check out the website www.scstatehouse.net/html-pages/housemembers.html to find out your representative's name and what he looks like. The Blatt Building houses the offices of the representatives. Most representatives share office space with three other representatives, their small personal offices arranged in a hub around a waiting area manned by a secretary at a desk which you see when you enter the room. You should introduce yourself to the secretary and ask to talk with your representative. Sometimes, more than one representative will come out of the little rooms into the waiting area, and it is very helpful to know which one is yours (!), so find out ahead of time what yours looks like. Remember this is a visit, not an overnight stay. Keep it short and pleasant. Your representative may not be favorable to homeschooling. Your goal is to introduce him to a fine homeschooling family, not necessarily make him change his diehard ways in one short visit. Politeness, respect for him and his views, and a listening attitude will go a long way toward his willingness to listen to you and your opinions.

Representatives go into session at noon, so if you visit after that (which is fine!), be prepared to leave a message with an aide or the secretary. If you write out your message, be sure to spell correctly! It is important that everything you do represents the excellence of homeschooling! For Christians, we are to do all things as unto the Lord. I Cor. 10:31

Across the paved, open area outside the south side of the Blatt Building is the Gressette Building. The Strom Thurmond Statue stands between the two buildings. This is the Lunch Spot, so plan on meeting back here at 12:00.

Senators are housed in the Gressette Building. Go to the web site www.scstatehouse.net/html-pages/senatemembers.html to find your senator's name and what he looks like. Again, when you enter the waiting area outside of your senator's office, you will speak to his secretary, asking to speak to your senator. Be prepared to leave a message and your treat if he is not there at the time you visit. You can ask that he call or email you later about a particular issue, if you desire.

Please feel free to bring from home some homemade bread, cookies, brownies, or apple pie to take to your representatives. They will love it! A nice touch is to take a smaller plate of the same thing to the secretary - she is rarely remembered in this way and will treasure your gift. Make sure and leave your name and phone number. It is important that your representative know that he was visited by a real, live constituent from his district.

As you prepare to visit your legislators, think of something positive to say about homeschooling. How is it working for your family? You do not have to be an expert on homeschooling law. Most likely, you know more than your legislator does about how it actually works in the average home, so you are an "expert" on the actual workings of homeschooling. Most of them are very interested in how it works, how the children are doing academically "in school," and what other social activities they have. Prepare your children to greet these men politely, to make eye contact, to speak clearly, and to shake hands firmly. If invited into the office, children should sit or stand quietly while the adults talk. Often, legislators will turn to the kids to ask a question about how he or she likes homeschooling or what he likes about homeschooling. So, you can practice possible scenarios at home ahead of time, to let your children know what to expect. Kids can be our greatest ambassadors.

As you prepare in the days before your visit, work through the schedule, so that you can plan how you will spend your time during the day. Allow enough time to go from one activity to another so your tour times are not overlapping. You will want to make time to visit your legislators or do the scavenger hunt on the grounds with your children. If you have both older and younger children, you might want to split up as parents, one taking the older children to visit the legislators, and the other taking the younger ones on a more active walk around the statehouse grounds finding the landmarks on the activity sheets. Completed activity sheets can be shown at the Sign-In desk to receive a little prize. Children can keep their sheets to take home for their homeschooling work for the day.

Please plan on visiting with friends, and meeting with the SCHEA Board, on the statehouse grounds for lunchtime. We will all gather in the vicinity of the Strom Thurmond Statue. Look for the band setting up. The AAA Homeschool Band and the Midlands Home School Band will perform for one hour, starting about 12:15 PM. Bring a blanket and plenty of food and drinks for your family.

The afternoon is free for families to visit other sites around Columbia. Peruse through the list of sites that have offered family discounts in order to plan your afternoon. You will need to present your SCHEA card at these sites in order to receive the discount.

This is an excellent way to round out your educational day in Columbia!

For those who wish to do a follow-up to this study, here are some other ideas: Write a letter of thanks to your legislator whom you visited, thanking him for his time and for what he does in serving his constituents. Use the information in your workshop packet to find his address and how to write this letter. Write a short report or journal entry on your favorite part of your day at the Capitol, or something you learned that day you didn't know before. Feel free to send it to SCHEA, for possible entry into the next newsletter. Write a field trip summary about the special place you visited in Columbia, i.e. the Riverbanks Zoo, and the things that most impressed you about that place.

The Sign-In Desk is NOT the information desk manned by Capitol staff as soon as you enter the door. The Sign-In Desk is a table outside our meeting room, Room 101 of the Blatt Building. At this desk, you can sign in to register your presence on this Day, pick up a schedule, turn in kids' creative business cards, pick up scavenger hunt sheets, get stickers, and get free tickets for Capitol tours (must pre-register).

Welcome to Freebie Friday

Teaching our kids to pray is a very vital part of our parenting. There are many free resources to use when teaching about prayer. Here are a few that I have picked out for you this week.

Teach Us To Pray has some really cute activities to help reinforce prayer. Here is a tutorial on how to make a Prayer Jar. Make your own Prayer Jigsaw Puzzle, or Scripture Flipper. Here is a huge collection of prayer coloring sheets.

Have you heard of Prepare and Pray? This is a curriculum geared toward teaching real life skills while acknowledging God as the true source of our well being. Here is a sample chapter of the Prepare and Pray Curriculum. They also have a sample chapter available for their Blessed Assurance Curriculum.

However you decide to teach your kids about prayer, the main thing is to model prayer for them. They will learn best simply by seeing you pray. Set the example just as Jesus did!

A Note from Gena

Have any of you moms or dads already graduated your homeschooler? Were you doubtful at times that you were "doing it right" only to realize after graduation that your child has now gone on to be successful and totally fabulous? In other words, your second guessing yourself was turned to joy and wonderment? We need your stories. Please email me with a short summary right away--gena@tosmag.com.

THANK YOU!
