FREEBIE FRIDAY
FROM
THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE MAGAZINE

The Econobusters blog and Molly Digests have been full of information on how to start a garden this year. We have ideas for everything from taking baby steps (my approach) to going whole hog. People across the country who have never gardened before are jumping on the bandwagon as well. The combined benefits of organic food and cost savings are getting hard to ignore. (If you haven't checked out the many resources on our blog, please do!)

But you know what? I think I may be getting brave enough to take an even bigger step! We visited some of our farm friends last night for a barbeque and I "met" their new piglets and some little chickies in the basement. In asking about the chicks, I was told that three laying hens would probably keep our family in eggs and would require very little room. Seems a bit radical as I live in town, but I'm considering it. Interested? Check out this post and offer your thoughts!

Lessons on Animals
Are you studying zoology or planning a trip to the zoo soon? The Internet has some excellent animal resources to help you to begin your zoo adventure!

Official zoo home pages usually have some great webcams and information. The Monterey Bay Aquarium website has various webcams and educational games and activities. You can check out the giraffe cam and the meerkat cam at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Smithsonian Zoological National Park has a large list of animal webcams and lesson plans. SeaWorld.com has their great Animal Bytes page full of animal fact sheets.

National Geographic has print-and-go coloring books. and an A-Z animals directory.

First-School.ws has plenty of activity and coloring printables for the younger children. So does DlTK's animal page. ABCTeach.com has theme units about safari animals, the zoo, and the rain forest.

ChristianAnswers.net has lessons on animals in the Bible, and you can also click and listen to the various sounds that animals make.

So if you're not heading over to the zoo anytime soon, you can still study the animals with all of the great resources we have online.
