I have been reading a book called Knights and Castles by Will and Mary Pope Osborne. There were different types of people 500 years ago. Those people had a thing called a Feudal System. There were 4 different levels in this system, they were: King, Baron, Knight and Serf. The King was ruler over all the land. The Baron was a nobleman who didn't own his land, but was in charge of it. He also had to swear an allegiance to the king which meant that he would die for the king and his kingdom and if there were a battle, he would send in his knights. The Knights protected the castle and the King. They had to swear an allegience to the King and the Baron. The Serfs were very poor, they usually worked in the fields or in the castle. They didn't have many rights.
My favorite was the Knight. I liked the Knight because they fought for the King. There were different things you had to do to become a Knight, you had to begin training at age 7 then when you became 14 you would become a squire. Then at age 21 you could become a Knight. As a knight you would wear armor that was called mail. Mail was made out of little steel rings that were linked together. All of this was so heavy that they had to wear padded underwear. It was hard to stand up. They also carried a sword and shield. I enjoy this book and I hope that you can read the book also. |
