Clear Shining After Rain

Some really great kids!

Yesterday it was my privilege to speak to three public school fourth grade classes in my hometown.  They asked some great questions about the Underground Railroad and writing, like:

Q. How much would a $1,000 dollar fine levied against abolitionists in 1840 come out to in today's money?

A. Approximately $30,000!

Q. Is there still slavery today?

A. Sadly, yes, even right here in Ohio.  A boy named Zach Hunter is trying to do something about the problem.  You can read more about him and become a modern-day abolitionist.  This is his MySpace page, headquarters for Loose Change to Loosen Chains: http://www.myspace.com/lc2lc   Zach has a book out, too.  You can read an article about him here: http://www.christiantoday.com/article/meet.zach.hunter.the.teenage.abolitionist/9640.htm

Here are some of the kids I talked to.  Maggie is the girl to whom I gave away a book in Latchkey one day.  She told her teacher, and now the teacher is reading the book to Maggie's class.  From there it developed into a talk for sixty kids.  Word of mouth really is the best way for others to learn about your books!  And here's a God thing:  Maggie is the girl with the flash halo. :-)

I really enjoyed reading about what you did with the fourth grade class. I was also inspired by your bloggy giveaway. I love to read with my children. We are in the process of choosing some books to read over the summer months.

Thanks for visiting my log.

That is so neat that you were able to visit a classroom and talk to the kids. My daughter loved it when she was in public school and could have an author visit.

How fun to visit with the kids. I'll bet you get rather interesting questions at time! You should keep a journal of the more memorable ones. ha.
