We went out to dinner last night for my birthday. We had a really nice booth in the center of Brio beneath fabric streamers that radiated to meet above our table. The five of us had a wonderful time.
I am a people watcher. There was a couple not too far from us who were dressed up for a Tuesday, at least compared to me! They were very attractive but not very animated. They pretty much just ate.
Before the first couple left, a second couple was seated. It's funny, but except for the colors the ladies wore, they were carbon copies of each other--late twenties, very nicely dressed. Both were right in my line of sight, so I would have had to stare at my plate to miss them. Anyway, the first couple soon made their stately exit, apparently used to being the center of attention.
Then our waiter brought the first course to the other couple. He had been very efficient and charming as he served us, but he proved he was only human. A sharp knife slid from the wooden tray, tip down, to land at the second young man's feet. I cringed for our waiter, but there was no reaction from the gentleman or the lady. The waiter brought out a clean knife.
Then as I watched, the second young man caught his date's hand and pulled it next to his heart. Then they tipped their heads together and asked the blessing. I was so moved I had to look away.
That's what I want for my kids.

Jul. 2, 2008 - Sweet!
At any rate, I'll remember your advice for my next thunderstorm...say in 2030. That's about how often we get the "good" ones. :-)
And I thought standing against the house, under the eaves, would be safe? Hmmm..Maybe not.
A few years ago I drove my sister nuts. The boys and I were staying with her in Salina, KS, during the spring and there were a few tornado warnings. Oh! What an opportunity! So my sis (who HATES tornados) was cowering in the basement of their fancy house, with the 2 babies and my boys and her boys, and I was out in the backyard HOPING to SEE a tornado. Ooooh...it was scary-good. I've never seen GREEN clouds before. And the wind. And the hail. I never saw any funnel or anything, because by then I figured I"d best go inside before my sister really had a fit, but .... OK.... maybe a little crazy.
Same with earthquakes. We had a significant one back in 2000. Hadn't been one like that since I was a kid. Kristel was over with the baby, the boys were doing math at the kitchen table, I was babysitting a 3-year-old, and it started. I was SO excited! Instead of getting under the table or whatever you're supposed to do, I went outside because what's the good of hiding and not SEEING anything? I saw the car bounce up and down, and the power poles wave back and forth. The chandelier over the kitchen table swung and swung.
I know. If I ever were to see a REAL earthquake or a REAL tornado or a REAL dangerous storm, I would not be so quick to want to watch. But for now....
Oh, yeah. I like scary rides at the amusement park, too.
