On a related note, I just read a post about a public school teacher's experience at the NEA convention in New Orleans in 1994 when teachers at the convention were lobbying against Louisiana, their host, and their "repressive" stance against the reproductive rights of women. Part of a larger story, he relates how he affixed one of the purple and white ribbons (in support of abortion on demand). He relates,
Taking a stand on our Biblically-based convictions perhaps can be the best way we can model our faith to our children. It's one of the most memorable, to be sure. It's moving outside of our comfort zone because it's important to us not to stand by while lives are lost, freedoms are dismantled, and souls are condemned. My son told me not too long ago that he was telling his friend, a Mormon, about heaven and hell and what it meant to be a Christian. He was frustrated that she didn't listen, but I was so proud of him for trying. He knew she wouldn't meet him in heaven just by listening to the false testimony of Joseph Smith, that she needed faith in Jesus Christ alone, and so he risked his friendship with her by telling her about it. How many of us would do the same? Would I?
God help me to do the right thing and take a stand on the things you want me to fight for. Guide my thoughts, and guide my heart on these issues. Never let me drift from what your heart is for your people.
