I found a site that goes into the history of the flag, detailing the different arrangements and what states were added with what stars. For example, here's the flag that was hoisted over Colorado when it was added in 1876.

It looks a bit different with 38 stars, doesn't it? But not nearly as odd as the proposed 51-star flag used by Puerto Rican statehood supporters.
I can remember receiving the flag for my great uncle who served in World War II, helping take it off his casket after he finally died from lung cancer. He picked up the habit of smoking "over there," in the infantry in North Africa and Italy. Every day that I fly my flag, a part of me quietly remembers his service, including his two purple hearts. I am still very proud of him, just like I'm proud of the volunteers who willingly go with their buddies to secure freedom and fight terror.
I'll close with the last stanza of The Star Spangled Banner, our national anthem.
Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation!
Blest with vict'ry and peace may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto - "In God is our trust,"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Take that, Michael Newdow.
